What about a new knockout comp running on Rep weekends? It will involve NRL clubs but be separate to the Premiership.

I.e.
ANZAC/CvC weekend - Round of 16 (8 matches)
Origin 1 weekend - quarter finals (4 matches)
Origin 2 weekend - semi finals (2 matches)
Origin 3 weekend - final (1 match)

Clubs can play a mix of regulars, reserve graders, and U20s depending on their inclination. Club-based content continues during Origin without ruining the integrity of the main Premiership.

So a bunch of dud games. I am sorry but how about NO. I would rather watch the Broncos with half our players than watch teams I have no interest in watching. The Origin week allows you as fans to see the next breed of stars getting a taste of first grade.

I struggle to understand why some fans of RL don't enjoy watching international RL?
I love it.

The only thing I care about in Internationals is our players not getting injured. I'll watch bits and pieces of it, but I'd rather watch a Broncos win than an International win.

Predictable bore? One country has a 90% chance of winning things. Another has 10%. And everyone else has a combined grand total of 0%.

Having said that, I do think there is a place for regular developing nation tests the week of stand alone origin games.

The Origin period should be reduced to 6 weeks, but it should stay right where it is on Wednesday night where it flourishes best.

Couldn't care less what you or other insular nrl fans like, it will be a major step forward for our SPORT. Believe it or not, rugby league is more important than the nrl. Fans arent going to stop supporting their nrl team because they don't play for 3 or 4 weekends, but the potential of the international game is massive. Other nations deserve to play their own rep games, it is unfair that only Australia gets the chance.

The wankers who pretend to be Rugby League supporters are the only people who need a weekly fix, diluted or not. The same f**king turkeys will again whinge when people needed to keep the game prospering ignore it. All League except Origin is dished up uncooked, just enough mindless fools feeding at the trough

Despite the tripe dished up on the field last night, it was a perfect night down at shark park in terms of experience. Warm, got to ride my bike down there and chain it 20m from the gate, heaps of room to spread out on the hill, no bar lines, no food lines, simply tremendous. I wonder how Souths supporters felt to be at a ground that was actually in South Sydney?

Nonsense. Tonight was one of the unsatisfying wins we've ever had in recent times because we had crap reserve graders (e.g. Reddy) playing for us.

And if you want to see the next breed of stars, make the U20s SOO a three game series and play it on the Saturday night before a Sunday Origin.

I could be wrong but I could of sworn Carney and Fifta aren't playing Origin, looking at the table Sharks are last and on a Monday night.... Hey it's Origin's fault

Samoa couldn't get 13 players released 2 weeks ago. Similar would happen if games were put on in Stand alone weekends

The weekend overall was well above my expectations.
My spider senses are tingling. Origin looms large.
We have some dud games even with all our players available.

we already have a week off for the NRL with only 2-3 games on that weekend. U20s SOO, Aus vs Eng and City Country. One of which is of any significance. And you don't see AFL and soccer swooping in...

Have either a 3 week break or 3 one week breaks. Put U20s SOO, City Country, NZ, Fiji, Tonga, Samo, PNG, (eng/france if possible) and the State of Origin on Sunday evening. There will be a decent amount of footy, 2-3 games isntead of 4 or 5. Removes the origin lull in crowds, creates an interest in people's teams who they havent seen in 3 weeks (i get excited after not seeing them for just 1 week) especially with the run to the finals coming up.

We can’t expect the poor sharks to get much more than they did last night on a Monday night. They had 7 million players out and were on a hiding to nothing.

The soccer crowd was good; it’s hard to argue that the Socceroos aren’t the most popular national sport side in Australia. Cricket would be the only competition.

We have tried this, doesn't work. Fans don't like it and hated it when it was tried!

Exactly WHEN was this tried? I've been watching the game for just over 20 years now & I honestly cannot remember having a standalone Origin weekend with no club footy.

Doing my comparison of games again (see http://forums.leagueunlimited.com/showpost.php?p=10147357&postcount=2019), Round 11 was down on the average of the equivalent games from 2009-2013. We got 71k, but the average was 78k. So the usual slide is happening.

crowd_2014_r11.png

Most of the fall came from Sharks vs Souths (-6k), thanks to Monday night footy. This was the lowest crowd for this fixture since 1992.

Other negatives were:
- Raiders vs Cowboys -3k
- Bulldogs vs Roosters -1k

Positives were:
- Tigers vs Broncos +2k
- Titans vs Warriors +1k

Next week's par crowd total is 112k, and I'm hoping for a small increase on that.

My guesses are:
Panthers vs Eels 19k
Roosters vs Raiders 13k
Cowboys vs Storm 20k
Warriors vs Knights 13k
Broncos vs Manly 36k
Souths vs Dragons 13k
Total: 114k

So a poor quality game with a small crowd in a run down stadium....

It sounds like youd be happy watching that Sharks at a reserve grade level...

origin is as successful as it is, ratings wise, because its smack bang in the middle of the work week, which means people are talking about it up until end of business Wednesday and then talking about the result for the rest of the week. Stick it on a weekend and you will lose all that build-up and forced engagement with the game by people who otherwise wouldn't watch it but do because they know its all everyone else will be talking about.

The stadium is not run down. The design isn't great but it isn't dilapidated or in poor repair like other suburban grounds. In fact when dressed for game day with electronic signage, lights on etc it looks really good. The amenities have been renovated and are up to date or at least painted and at a serviceable standard.

I think it's to big now for that to matter. It was really only the club games not being played that stopped the stand alone concept.
