Apparently will be signing with Canberra.
Oh man the kid is in for a world of pain, unless they offered him $250k+ its a dumb move. First and foremost the raiders and shit and don't look like improving next year especially with Furner still and the helm; secondly despite how shit the raiders are, backrow is probably their position of strength, Papalii and Thompson aren't fare off NZ and country origin selection respectively, and offer a hell of alot more on the fringes than Edwards. Shaun Fensom is their captain in waiting and is an 80 minute workhorse.
If all that isn't bad enough, Canberra is an absolute shithole

Joel Edwards joins Canberra Raiders

HOME-grown Knights forward Joel Edwards has agreed to terms on a three-year deal worth more than $200,000 a season with Canberra two days after rejecting an extension offer from Newcastle. The Cessnock Goannas junior and manager Darryl Mather turned down a two-year extension with the Knights reportedly worth more than $300,000 on Wednesday.
It shocked the Knights, who believed the offer to the 44-game forward was more than fair.
Mather would not comment on speculation on Thursday linking Edwards to the Raiders but the Herald was told yesterday the 24-year-old had agreed to join Canberra on $50,000 more a year than the Knights had tabled.
Mathers and Edwards did not respond to calls from the Herald for comment yesterday.

 well done, Mr Mathers. Certainly earned your commission on that sale

I can't see why they bought him unless they want him to play hooker? I know that's a long shot but he would be very lucky to get a bench spot with the backrowers they have and the prop rotation taking two spots on the bench.

THE manager of departing Knights forward Joel Edwards believes his client is a potential State of Origin player for next season who will have no trouble finding a new NRL club after rejecting an extension offer from his home-town team.

Edwards?s manager Darryl Mather would not comment on details of the offer but was confident Edwards would easily find a suitable deal at another NRL club.

??This is a quality player we?re talking about, not some run-of-the-mill player, and quality players usually find employment,?? Mather said.

??If he was a marginal player, the fact we?re talking about next year and it?s round 22, it could be problematic.

??But I think Joel will be a Country player next year and could even be in contention for Origin.??

CANBERRA has moved quickly to snap up Newcastle backrower Joel Edwards just 48 hours after he announced he would be quitting the Knights at the end of the season.

Edwards surprised Knights management and coach Wayne Bennett by knocking back a new two year deal with the Knights worth more than $300,000 on Wednesday.

His manager Darryl Mather claimed yesterday no other rival NRL club had shown any interest in Edwards.

But we understand Edwards has since agreed to terms with the Raiders on a three year deal although Canberra CEO Don Furner wasn?t prepared to confirm the signing this afternoon.

?We?d love to have him but it?s not quite done yet,??Furner said.

?He definitely fits the sort of player we would love to have at our club.??

It?s understood the Raiders initially showed interest in Edwards two months ago but only recently renewed that interest

This certainly makes more sense now- there is no manager in the NRL that is dumb enough to walk away from a guaranteed $150k/yr with no backup plan, especially with a player the calibre of Edwards.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Canberra connection had been there for quite some time and Edwards' recent "good" form was his last effort to get a better contract here.

But what I don't understand- wouldn't Edwards have been in a better position if he actually let Newcastle know what the Canberra offer was or that they were even in talks with them? Of course Newcastle wouldn't throw more money his way if it appeared there was no interest from other clubs.

EDIT: Tom's article above confirms what I was thinking.

lol cant believe some of the comments from a raiders forum The Greenhouse, the thread isnt even a full page yet

Seen a lot of this bloke, big call but he'll play origin. Not just a defensive player he has skills but told not to use them by Bennett. Getting out of Newcastle the best thing for him. Rapt with this buy.

This guy has some talent. I see him pushing papalli to the bench

 it's like they have never watched a game of footy in their life

Seriously?! lol Talk about a straight up fabrication to try and make it look like the signing of the year.

I can't stop laughing

It is Bennett's fault he is going to break the record for most games without a try in firstgrade haha. Has he even got a try assist?

Well he gets a few more dollars and an early holiday this year. Good for him.

Better he takes up their cap than ours.

Wonder if it's from the same Raiders brains trust that said Daniel Vidot would play for Australia by now.

Lol at Josh P being pushed out of the starting lineup for Edwards. Actually, lol at Edwards playing SOO. The bloke will be 25 next year. When's the origin debut going to be?

Dave Furner will no doubt bring out that exceptional skill that Bennett put the chains on! Only Canberra could be so daft as to pay that sort of money. Will suit Eddie's delusional beliefs to the ground playing down there. The most arrogant out of touch city in our nation.
