Eels under pressure to turn around recruitment policies

When I played soccer I got shorts and socks as part of my rego fee. I also got to wash the shirts once every 15 or so weeks.

:blahb: I'll give Kearney one thing, he sure does have friends in the right places.

I always have and always will be a Parramatta Eels supporter first and foremost. And I will always watch and cheer on the team no matter who is in the side or who the coach is but...

I am so sick and tired of the pro-Kearney propaganda from certain sections of the media. The guy may well turn out to be a terrific coach in years to come but for now, he is a rookie who has achieved nothing. All these articles do is put more pressure on the poor bloke.

If the powers that be in this great club have made the decision to ride out the next few years to give Kearney every possible chance to succeed, then good on them. It is the right thing to do for a coach. The question is why Anderson - a career coach with a record most coaches would kill for - was not given the same consideration.

Anyway, here's hoping the only way is up for our great club.

WOE

PS: IMO, the only positive thing this current group running the club has done is to revert to the old (best) logo and return our jersey to it's best design. Other than that, what have they done that the previous jokers couldn't have done? Recruitment under this current mob has been nothing short of diabolical. Let's hope things improve shortly or we are heading back to the dark old days of the late 80's - early 90's.

Couldn't have said it better.

The treatment & hypocrisy shown to the former coach compared to the current one is ridiculous.

Blair's asking price is 500k a season... Kearney obviously and rightfully thinks that's too much and therefore is not pursuing him.

I'm sick of these excuses. Why is it that other clubs are able to sign marquee players and we're left sitting here twiddling our thumbs because they're supposedly too expensive. We were given the same "salary cap" excuses when Mateo and Inu were let go and now we're supposedly under the salary cap by a substantial amount. Looking at our backline and how we lack that X factor this really pisses me off. Should I be expected to believe the Tigers are dumb enough to pay 500k for Blair but we are oh so clever because we'll be sitting here boasting about how we don't pay overs for players while we struggle on the field?

I can't understand why Carl Webb isn't playing and why have Billy Rogers in the side. I would start Shack at 12 and dump Lasalo

Webb is not getting a game because the players in front of him have a high work rate. They are the players that SK likes to have on the ground.

For that to change, Webb will need to convince SK that he contributions in short stints will be in such high quality that it justifies dropping Smith or Lasalo. That means also that the other players are able to step up and cover the drop in work rate.

Clubs can only afford two marquee players - one in the halves and one elsewhere.

We've got Hayne elsewhere (he's not a half which is why club and rep coaches never pick him there) which means our next one will have to be a half.

The Tigers' marquee player is Benji Marshall (a half). Therefore their next marquee player can play outside the halves. Adam Blair is one such player.

Yep.

Webb plays the Fui role and there can be only one.

My point is if Rogers is not going to play or get limited minutes then put Webb on the bench to use as the impact player instead. We lost direction when Moi Moi went off, if Webb was on I think he could have kept us rolling forward. Seriously he played against the Cowboys and was a great impact player then not used again.

That's a good point.

Probably why the Tigers' depth is worse than ours. Sheens' strategy seems to be to put all his eggs in one basket - he's happy to let injuries cause him to miss the finals in any given year if it means he's a serious shot of winning it when he does get there.

Brian Smith is the opposite - he loves depth and doesn't like superstars chewing up his salary cap.

It's the old how-much-depth-is-too-much debate.

Or Ellis. Lawerence just signed a multi million dollar deal too. Tuquiri????

None of those three would be on close to half a million. Lawrence is on about $300k. Ellis and Tuqiri about $250k which is a bit above average for a top 17 player.

I dont know how many times I have said it or it has been stated, but both Inu and Mateo did not leave because of the salary cap.

The one positive thing I have been told is that since Nolan, SK and Arthurs have come on board dealing with the club (recruitment) is much much improved. The issue they have still to overcome is the negative stigma associated with the club - which unfortunately is going to take $$ to fix.... There is light at the end of the tunnel but if people think it's coming tomorrow they are on drugs
