Females and Rugby League

mayeb this is tokenism from channel 9 ... no one knows. but putting a woman on tv talking about footy isn't necessarily about pleasing women, it's about looking for new voices in footy. if you are happy with the same old cheap gag footy show bullsh*t every week, then ... you are one of the two people who are.

I agree with you. Putting a woman on is not about pleasing women. A woman who is a footy fan would have been watching the Footy Show regardless of who was on the panel and to be honest I can't see this alone attracting new women to the game. However I have been wrong before.

The important thing about getting a woman on the panel (or anyone new for that matter) is that they get time to lose the nerves and feel comfortable so that they can really contribute. You can't dump these women in as "special guests" for a week and expect them to win over the audience.

You have found a way to disparage all woman footy fans.

Here's a tip - more footy fans avoid that show than watch it.

The reason plants like Wilson & Magnay fit so well is that they blend in with the other idiots.

Hey Hey It's Thursday.

Fair call. It has improved this year though and I think Mangay is pretty good. I only just went back to the show after getting sick of the crap.

at least Magnay actually has credibility and she isn't on there coz shes married to a footy player or whatever (remember Craig Gowers wife?).

bahahahahha.

truth is, this whole thread was made to stir trouble. the only thing I think is sad is when people already have fixed ideas of what men and women are meant to like.

if you refuse to let 'chicks' around when you're watching footy then you're probably missing out on some people who could be really awesome mates if not girlfriends.

and if you think women don't ever belong on tv then it just sounds like hypocrisy, because plenty of men on tv have never played the game. we watch rabs commentate swimming, for god's sake, you know?

sucks to be you.

I need to work on my bait

To be serious though, I think the problem here is it is very fake and really comes off as that's exactly why they're having women on the show - to 'please' women. Ideally it shouldn't be the intention but it's just the way it appears to most people watching the show. Whether it's because of the selection of women they have on there, or just that we haven't seen many on there before and now it seems like it's being forced or something.

To be fair to Amanda, however, she wasn't exactly put there to discuss rugby league in depth. She did what she did (light hearted eye candy stuff), and she did it competently. And I doubt it was totally because of Craig Gower, as she was on the same show as Danny Weidler, who liked nothing more than to string him up.

my wife hates RL - and its a huge pain in the arse when I want to sit and watch it and she wants to watch some reality tv crapola or whatever...

however - to be honest, I don't want a chick who 'drinks beer and watches footy' either - and my mates are in agreeance. Any chick who is in to that we've got no dramas hanging out and watching a game - but they are 'mates' and not really seen as gf material.

so I don't agree that most blokes want that. it's not that we feel disempowered or anything - its like women wanting their blokes to be part of their weekly girls catch up at the coffee shop - that's her time to talk sh*t and socialise.
Footy is my time, and other blokes see it the same way as a social event for the boys..

doesn't make them intolerant or sexist or anything like that

Amen to that.

Women give a good presence on the Rugby League media, the ones involved definitely know what they're talking about. Keep it up.
Wilson!?? :BDH:

I actually don't mind Magnay being there, but it did definitely seem like a desperate attempt by the show to 'appeal' to the female audience

anyway, what was this topic about? if she/he knows his/her stuff... then everything's fine

hahahah loudy, u gotta take when u can get!

okay boys seriously, the arrogance and self obsession of footy being 'guy time' is deadset PATHETIC.

i think its fine if u wanna hang out with ur mates without chicks around, i get that. but it is SO SEXIST to delegate footy as guy time, and girl time being us sitting around gossiping. is this the 50s???

btw a chick being into footy and drinking beer doesn't make her blokey. you would never see me or any of my girlfriends that love footy out and about and think 'blokey'. trust me on this.

female footy fans come in all different packages, trust me on this.

im not even offended by all this as much as just ......saddened. there is so much embedded sexism in Australia and i don't know if its ever gonna change.

It is not ladylike behaviour. I don't want a woman who wants to try and compete with me in the bar. Some women need to know their role in society.
Face the facts. There is not a single woman in Australia who can make a credible footy show panellist. The show IS a blokey one. Rebecca Wilson would be as out of place as Fatty Vautin would on Oprah.

Women drink and follow sports, deal with it buddy. It may not be seen as "stereotypical" female behaviour, but who gives a sh*t? Next thing you'll say it's "not manly" of me to not be punching the way out my issues, listening to boring standard rock music, and all that other "blokey" sh*t.

Ok then...let's have a footy show panel with four ladies and one guy. Ratings will fall faster than a Mick Molloy show.

Don't you feel that the show is disjointed when a lady shows up?

Well yes it is awkward, but it's not to do with the vag they're packin. Rebecca Wilson just wasn't very good as per usual (although Fatty being a f**kwit and ignoring her didn't help proceedings) and Magnay just hasn't got a TV rhythm yet. There's no denying she knows her sh*t, whether she can do it in front of a camera smoothly remains to be seen.

my wife can drink me under the table, no worries...

lucky I am man enough to handle that....

some men need to grow some gonads and harden the fcuck up.... if you measure your manhood on whether you can drink more than your mrs (or whether, god forbid, she is a bigger footy fan than you!), you mustn't have much manhood to start with....
