Future NRL Stadiums

Well , its up to the people of blacktown to put a stop to the waste.

Seems that whoever they vote in, they turn out to be agenda driven/incompetent in that respect. I grew up in the area and remember the dearth of decent spectator sport there. Absolute shame that nothing has changed in the last 20 years, and its cost the public a lot of money for the privilege of nothing.

How often would an athletic event need a stadium with 20k capacity? Surely it would be better to have an athletic venue with a 5k capacity (stand along the west side next to the 100m track). Then if you're going to bother building a rectangular ground, you'd build something with at least 30k capacity. Having it at 20k would ensure that nobody would ever use it. Why would a NRL or A-League club take its games there? They already have this at Parra or Campbelltown or Penrith.

This is one of the stupidest and ill thought out proposals I have ever seen. What rugby league or a-league club is going to play out of a rectangular field with an athletics track around it, terrible from a spectating POV. Would be a waste of public money!

So if this is what they are proposing for the area then I assume they won't be considering a large purpose built rectangular stadium in the area, as has been mooted. If that's the case the screw them, I am sure Liverpool would love a large stadium for the bulldogs, tigers and Wanderers.

On the oval ground, surely they have learned their lesson on this issue. They built the existing facility for the Canberra giants and they have now disengaged from the area entirely! If the NSW gov't is true to its own review about stadia in Sydney then this proposal will be incinerated immediately

The facility they're proposing would be fine without the big grandstands.

I could see a lot of schools using it for athletics & cricket.

But you can't build stands like that without a tennant.

Wanderers and Eels unite for stadium revamp push

Date
May 23, 2013

Adrian Proszenko

Parramatta and the Western Sydney Wanderers might be cross-code rivals, but they have joined forces in their campaign for a better stadium.

Eels officials have been in talks with their Wanderers counterparts about their future venue needs, with a revamp of Parramatta Stadium or the construction of a new facility in the region their preference. The teams are in heated competition for fans, members and sponsors, but they have found common ground in their desire to provide them with the best possible amenities. Both have ambitions of building membership bases that far outstrip the 20,000-seat capacity of their current premises.

Eels chief executive Ken Edwards, who has extensive experience in stadiums strategy as the former chief executive of ANZ Stadium, confirmed he was in talks with Wanderers officials. ''We've had some discussions with the Wanderers around what their plans and what our plans are,'' Edwards said. ''Our public position is that Parramatta is our home and where we always want to be. At the end of 2012 we had 12,000 members and now we have 16,000 members. Our market research, coupled with the work we've done with the NRL, tells us we should have up to 40,000 members by 2017.

''That obviously brings into sharp focus our stadium issues in terms of capacity and the facilities that go with it. Parramatta Stadium was built in the '80s, and pretty much nothing has happened to it since then. In the meantime, there have obviously been redevelopments at ANZ Stadium and Allianz Stadium, meaning that, as a club, unless there are upgrades at Parramatta Stadium we are at a significant financial disadvantage and our members aren't getting the sorts of facilities other members are getting. Anything that we and the Wanderers can do to get a better facility at Parramatta Stadium - or a new facility somewhere in Parramatta - is a good thing.''

Parramatta have managed to grow their membership base during difficult times on the field - they ''won'' the wooden spoon last year - while attendances for home matches remain fairly stable. However, the Wanderers became the hottest ticket in town during their fabled run to the A-League grand final. Their supporter group, the Red and Black Bloc, grew exponentially throughout the club's debut season, and Football Federation Australia boss David Gallop is on record as calling for an upgrade of Parramatta Stadium ''based on the phenomenal success of the Wanderers in year one which has seen three sold-out matches''.

The NSW government has outlined a stadium consolidation strategy, with ARL Commission boss David Smith confirming there will be a move towards playing matches in two or three larger venues in future. The Eels also plan to create a centre of excellence to replace their aged training facilities.

Asked if they could share a high-performance unit with the Wanderers, Edwards said: ''It's very difficult to share high-performance facilities, there aren't too many examples that we're aware of where that works. Our rugby league high-performance training requirements are very different to those of football. That's not to say it couldn't work … While have been having some informal discussions with the Wanderers we haven't done anything formal with them. We're still pursuing our own stand-alone high-performance community centre.''

Looks like every club wants the new stadium in THEIR backyard. Hopefully the government has more sense than that.

The last thing we need is another stadium on the M4 corridor. Homebush is already built and so close to Parra I can not see how a nearby stadium is justified. Yes we have been royally stuffed by the building of new multi purpose stadiums (read AFL stadiums) however outside of the Liverpool area I can not see where a new rectangular stadium in Sydney can be justified.

It seems every club just wants what's best for them..... And fair enough. But I think its time the Sydney clubs sit down with the NRL and make a group decision on a 3 stadium, 4 stadium, 5 stadium and 6 stadium outcome. Then they can go to the gov and plead there case.

Each club putting proposals to the gov makes it harder for the entire NRL to grow because everyone's in it for themselves! The clubs need to get over themselves!

I don't think it's gonna happen, the government is cutting back on costs not spending,
We don't really need it atm anyway, how often are we filling stadiums?

I agree. Really, stadiums just need some upgrades and ANZ should be rectangular. It really is that simple...(Yes, I know its not simple and probably would cost more than building another stadium)

The government have already said they just want a teams to play out of a few stadiums and they don't to keep upgrading suburban grounds.

They'd much prefer to build a new stadium in the long term than upgrade many stadiums all over the city.

big hit!

What a massive waste of money.

Sydney has all these facilities at homebush. Why the hell would we need more?! Especially the running track.

The oval might be used for one pre-season VFL game.

Other than that maybe a shield match and some domestic 20/20's.

Where are these facilities at Homebush? There are plenty at Olympic Park, but none that I'm aware at Homebush.

Parra Stadium upgrade will be the cheapest option...and the quickest.
The master plan has already been done. $94 Million
Public capacity increased to 31,300 seats

Stage 1 ( 34 Million ) to upgrade the Eastern and Western grandstands.
increasing the corporate seating and a new 500 seat function room in the Eastern Grandstand.
