I voted for Hendrix followed closely by Eddie.

One major ommision from that list would have to be Dr Know from the Bad Brains, ask any band member from janes addiction, red hot chili peppers, deftones to even the beastie boys and they will tell you that he was the greatest punk guitarist ever.

Get over yourself....have you ever seen'The song remains the same' movie??

i have

dazed and confused for 35 f**king minutes of pure self indulgance zzzzz

complete with 10 minutes of weird noises that sound like a strangled cat with the violin bow

the only piece i thought page played well in that set was no quarter where at least he tried to be more subtle

page was a wonderful musician in the studio but didnt sound good live

have a close listen to their acoustic sets live when jones on mandolin was actually the one making it sound good

I find it interesting that Hendrix and Page are rated as some of the greatest guitar players of all time by their guitar playing peers... and some of the all time greatest musicians...

However a nobody like millersnose has the gall to say that they are over-rated.

lol

having bob marley in your avatar does not make you a non-nobody

come around zed you pick me a page or hendrix piece and you ask me to play it - i even have a violin bow

then i will get a george benson or a chet atkins piece and see if you can work them out

Don't get all holier than thou on me millers.. ;-)

You're argument is the equivalent of the good old 'you couldn't be a better a footballer so you have no right to comment' line. Just because you're a rockstar in your own garage doesn't mean that you are correct. It just means you think you are correct.

Page and Hendrix are regarded - by their guitar playing peers (and that doesn't include you) - as two of the all time greatest guitar players. This means that I am correct, and you are in fact wrong. :D

oh i think we will get hendrix and page fans to agree with you

but from memory according to the last poll from guitar player magazine a guy named paco de lucia has been voted best of all time

with due respect to rolling stone magazine its context is purely pop music

Why does no one mention Steve Howe?(YES) Totally awsome guitarist!!!

Also Larry Carlton....Who played with Steely Dan was the guitarists guitarist for years and years....

Actually Tommy Emmanuel shared a flat with him in the U.S for a couple of months so that goes to show how good TE is as well.
Page atleast we knew had talent!...he probably wasn't too good live but you & i know that when in the studio his attention to detail was spot on!

Get over yourself....have you ever seen'The song remains the same' movie??

larger than life!!

And who the f**k is "Ratt"

Who hasn't......and what about it :? .....have you seen Wayne's world

Yeah Ratt was no one special....they where just a band from LA in the 80's who happened to sell over 10 million albums....no big deal.

Steve Howe greatest guitarist .....Kurt Cobain was even more talented

As evidenced earlier in the Immortals thread.. selling 10 million albums really is no big deal. Puts them right up there amongst the Ace of Base's and Backstreet Boys of the world. ;-)

Who are there peers????

Steve Pre was regarded as the most inspirational runner of all time...even though he never won Gold, so does this mean he was the best??

Page talented yes!, Hendrix??.....as i said earlier why was Hendrix so good??

True, but he didn't even know who they where....that's was what i was trying to point out!, the Ramones didn't even have a platinum album.....Ratt had 6 of them including a triple!, that was in America alone!

So if Eddie Van Halen said that the Bay city Rollers & Grand Funk Railway where the best bands that would make them the best??....they where his biggest inspirations??.

What happens if you had no peers....and actually invented it??....like Berry & BB King??

Ones I like from the Rolling Stone list:

3 B.B. King
4 Eric Clapton
14 Jeff Beck
15 Carlos Santana
28 Stephen Stills
36 Steve Cropper of Booker T. and the MG's
40 John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival
50 Pete Townshend - the best at smashing his guitar
72 Joni Mitchell
83 Neil Young

It's all about personal taste. These people played songs I enjoyed. The original question should have read Rock guitarists - I agree with Millers that the George Benson and Chet Atkins were probably more talented than most rock guitarists.

Music MAx had ther top 100 guitarists on Saturday.

Of course Jimi was No 1.

I'm not sure how the list was compiled, but it seems that we are not the only ones that think Jimi was the best.

Along with Jimi, BB King and Eric Clapton made up the top 3.

And i bet you Kurt Cobain was high up on the list aswell

They have to please there readers some how?

I just find it funny how Chuck Berry....Jimmy's biggest influence, the man who brought rock guitar to the world couldn't even get into the top 3?

Post the link Twizzle, i'd like to see how far down Eddie is

I voted Steve Vai as he's a great songwriter as well as guitarist and seems to be able to create more weird ass sounds than any other guitarist out there.

Marty Friedman is Great, as is Joe Satriani, Tony Macalpine, Paul Gilbert, Victor Smolski and John Scofield.

My favourite guitarist to listen to at the moment is Victor Smolski From RAGE. He creates some of the most interesting solos I've ever heard and his riffs are equally as good.
