For me, i can't go past Layne Staley either... nothing has impacted me more than AiC.

I love Akefeldt when he doesn't growl, like songs like Patterns in the Ivy II etc are awesome.

To me, that's what makes him king - his growls are vicious and powerful, yet clean and even melodic. And then he can sing, and bloody well, too. He is an amazing talent.

Skill - 10/10. How can someone who can growl so convicingly sing so clearly and beautifully?
Emotion - 10/10. Again, his voice and music itself conveys purest emotion.
Stage Presence - 10/10. He IS Opeth, even though he's not a founding member.
Versatility - 10/10. Again, the man can do anything.
Lyrics - 10/10. His lyrics are haunting, cryptic and yet accessble.

He is definitely my favourite frontman/lyricist/vocalist atm.

Although this thread should also mention Angela Gossing - in a metal world dominated by men, it is refreshing to hear a woman who can growl. And growl better than a lot of guys, too.

Dio is brilliant.

And I'm kind ofpuzzled why Tyler wasn't mentioned until a page ago. Perhaps not a brilliant voice, but it's one that everybody knows. And personally, love Steve Tyler's voice.

The singer fro Killswitch is great, too. I forget his name atm.

Well i'm going to talk about great females lead here as we already know that RJD and Axl are the greatest ever.

1st Johnette Napolitano, Concrete Blonde, an amazing singer with a terrific range and from all reports a great live act.

This is her with 'Joey'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIIlUHBNkEc

2nd Leslie Knauer , Promises, an unbelievable range with the best set of natural assets i've ever seen

This is her with 'baby its you'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xyvgv9J6maE

3rd Christina Amphlett, The Divinyls a great Australian female singer, made it overseas and apart from a great voice was a terrific live act.

This is her with 'Pleasure and Pain'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDnhKyn-xaA

4th Fiona Horne, Def fx, this girl had so much talent it wasn't funny, looks, magnificant range, lyrics, live act ( she flashed her boobies at us once on stage :) an absolute waste that she didn't carry on her talent after the demise of one of Australia's better and more talented groups.

Here is 'Psychcoactive Summer'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDnhKyn-xaA
i'll throw in an extra one, a bit out of left field, Shirley Manson.

Staley sh*ts all over most of your second tier (IMO, ofcourse)

I'm not much of an Alice in Chains fan and Staley's voice has never made me sit back and go wow.

Not so sure about Kurt though ...

lol, you're never sure when it comes to Nirvana. It's not based on skill as Kurts voice was very rough at times to put it nicely but his voice suited Nirvana's music perfectly. I'd have him on my list somewhere just for 'Where did you sleep last night?' from the MTV Unplugged set.

Tyler is great live. Bloody great lyrics too. Probably best of the white Yanks (except for Dio)

That bloke could sing twinkle twinkle little star and have the ladies pants off before he got to the ''up above the sky '' part.

I have all the recorded tracks of both Nirvana and AiC... there really is no comparison between Kurt and Layne... (Staley>>>Cobain...)

Yeah that was a standout performance. Kinda like how I'm not really a Soundgarden or Audioslave fan, but I'd put Chris Cornell on my list for one moment at the Big Day day out around 95 or 96. I wasn't even watching Soundgarden's set, but I walked into the arena just as he was launching into a solo rendition of "Black Hole Sun"- it was absolutely mesmerising, possibly THE greatest live vocal moment I've ever witnessed.
