You all seem to be looking at it from the obvious affect it could have, a negative one but really it could be quite motivational.

I certainly know in my own life I've had situations where I've been criticised in a similar manner and the only thing I wanted to do was go out and excel and whatever it was I was criticised for so I could shove it down the throat of the person who criticised me.

I also seem to recall a well documented incident involving brandy where Phil Gould absolutely gave it to him in front of the team during half time one match. Pretty sure Brandy considers that a major turning point in his career.

I was hit and given some narky sarcasm by my water polo coach once. He was lucky I didnt throw him into the pool and keep him under for a spell. Made me feel awful at the time, although I'm over it now.

My rugby union coach only praised me when I wasnt around, not that I was one of the better players mind you.

My point is that everybody and every player is different.

And I'm not the only one. They are big boys and they don't need to wraped in cotton wool and have the noses and bums wiped for them. It WILL have a positive affect..

I hope so, but the proof is in the pudding. We shall see.

One of the problems over the last 2 seasons was John Lang was happy with Joel's form.Elliott obviously has higher expectations from him,and hopefully he will respond in a positive way and maybe even earn a Blues jersey.

Joel is good for 10 minutes a game, and Lang was happy with that...Maybe Elliot wants him to be good for 50 minutes a game ... all the time he is on the field, rather than the first 10 minutes.

The key to Joel's game is to model himself on Webcke. Your Last hit up should be as hard as your first and you just shut your mouth to the media and don't give the other team anything to feed off. Then release a book when your career is finished haha.

The guys need counselling and fitness, not animosity.

Maybe they could sit around a campfire and roast chestnuts..maybe tell old fables of how sh*t their 2005-2006 seasons were....maybe a few group hugs and kisses and saying how good they are, because reality might bite a little too much.

Hippy style techniques shouldn't be put on Rugby League players.

Clinton was below his best for about 80% of the season, as were most of the players....even my favourite player Priddis. I thought this year was his worst in Penrith colours...

To me, the only players that can hold their heads high are Wesser, Gordon and Aiton. Everyone else had shocking years, well below their best. Except Rodney before he was injured, I thought he only had one shocker all year, that was against Cronulla.

To me the fact he said this to Clinton is good. Because Clinton might pull the finger out his bum and start acting, training and being a proper footballer. We have all seen how good he can be, when he is in the mood. Its time he got in the mood for entire game, every game, every season. The fact remains, that Clinton is off contract next year. He is currently on a MASSIVE contract, far above what he is worth to the club.

This is a make or break year for a few of these over-paid players that are off contract. Luke Rooney and Joel Clinton are the two highest paid under-performers at the moment, and both have young players chomping at the bit to get their spots. They have two choices. Pull their fingers out and show why they played rep football....OR....be dropped to reserve grade, sold off and the young guys come in and take over. Its that simple.

If joel was only good for 10 minutes a game than that is because the fittness regime in place made him that way. I thought last season we were better fittness wise then 2005 but still a very long way off the pace. Even in 2003 fitness was hardly our strong point alot of games we held in there through shere will and determination.

I am not saying that they need a cuddle or nice warm hugs, but players minds are delicate things and they are somewhat critical to player performance (!!).

Wayne Bennet hires sports psychologists and I submit, so should Matty Elliot.

Thats the cutting edge in professional sport these days.

We dont want Clinton offended or hurt to the extent that, subconsciously, he doesnt put in.

Different players need different approaches too-and I say that on the basis that differences exist between players and how they think.

It sounds nice and result-orientated to scream at them, but maybe thats harmimg them?

I think we need the experts on this one folks.

Anyway, thats my take on it.

Cheers everyone.

Be true to LU

I agree Dave, I also agree with you Lainey... there are many tactics that can work, I think a major part of our underachieving this season was mental. If each players individual way of handling expectations from the coach was addressed it would make a drastic improvement, whether it be a firm kick up the arse, or a good kissing of the arse, whatever works for who.. so maybe Daves suggestion on a sports phychologist to work with the players and Elliot would work wonders.

Either way.. I'm super excited about next year! I'm expecting it to feel very fresh and crisp.. exciting times ahead.

I think you will find the fact a new coach is starting it should give that urgency that is needed.

Thank God for that.

Nice one Big Mick..

Rooney spends the entire year with his hands in his pockets after being starved of the ball and he gets the blame. Pull the other leg!

Wesser as consistent? Thats a laugh. Dont tell me he's earning peanuts either.

The key to this mob is through careful, focused, thoroughly thought-out fitness and mental programs tailored to suit their individual needs.

The old days of the last bloke back from the run does it again, is well and truly over.

Youd be wanting to start your own HPU (make adamson a tackle dummy-that would help).

Now pass me another marshmallow Big Mick, I choked on the last one after reading your last post!!

Cheers everyone.

An urgent need to throw him into the lake mob!

Mobs comments aside, generally one would think that there is more to learning mental fitness than copping sarcasm from the new coach.

Players deserve dignity and respect, the vast majority are finely tuned athletes with significant mental agility in their chosen field of endeavour.

Other people agree with me Lainey as others agree with you.

I'm not forcing my view down your throat. You can disagree with it if you want to.

You can visit Souths too if you want, I'm not stopping you.

Or you can visit that forum where I have been banned, you wont bump into me there-I can guarantee it!

People have different opinions Lainey and you seem to have missed the exclamation mark at the end.

I am not ambitious enough to consider that everyone will agree with me.

I know people have differing opinions Dave it's go nothing to do with who agrees with whom, it's the stupid statement you made about throwing him in the lake, exclamation mark or not. You are damn right you won't force your views on me, I can think for myself thanks very much..

Thank god Dave Q is not Joel Clinton.

Hasnt Penrith already used a sports physcologist back when they were on a bad losing streak? Either the Royce Season or JL's first season?

I would have hoped so, but its a new season, different players, different strengths and weaknesses. Best to play it safe.

Players are not boofheads.

I think and hope that seeing there is a new coach new plays new training schedules and well you get my drift about whats changing that it will entice all the players to find that extra mile in training and come game time then as well..hopefully we can correct those terrible 10 or 20 minute spells of nothingness where we slipped into many comas and let the other team get past us..its cost our team at least 2 years and as i said i wish it stops and we can fix those lapses even slow them down to say 2 or 4 minute gaps which will make a huge difference to us winning games.
I think that many players who did go missing wont be miffed by remarks from others no matter who they are i hope it will give them determination pride and help them excell to be better players that do give 100% win loose or draw. Joel clinton just has to find what got him selected for Aus and he will be back to his best.

Phew that was a long post im buggered now....lol:alcho: :alcho: :alcho:

Its a similar point to murraymob, who I take it thought that the players would be enlivened and enthused by a new coach, notwithstanding any other variable. I expect thats true but that may not be enough for the whole season.

The spells you mention are very important. A few holes plugged there and the Panthers may well have made it to the finals. They werent too far away either.

And this is part of what I want the club to address and what I am saying is that it takes a big effort in many areas to fill these gaps, its not just related to one problem or one individual. Its not fair to single out Clinton as a slacker. He doesnt play alone.

The guys that you said went missing, maybe they didnt, maybe they were there but they were tired, lacking concentration, injured or otherwise hurt, Maybe they lacked the requisite skills and abilities to carry on as expected.

I didnt see any Panthers deliberately miss any tackles or hide from a passed ball. I reckon that they had a go.

I am sure Lang could see what was happening and despite his best efforts it was re-occuring. You dont get many chances for mistakes though.

Thats why the Panthers need a massive injection of resources into these areas. They need to be mentally and physically fit to perform at their peak for the entire season. No stone should be left unturned in that effort.

Some here may think that I dont like or support Elliot-but thats not true. I am surprised by his comments though.
