So you want to add 2 extra teams, put limits on ticket prices, improve public transport to stadiums, upgrade stadiums, limit the competition to 17 rounds.... and your suggestion to fund all these extra costs involved is for the NRL to accept a lesser TV Deal

I think stopping it for 3 weeks - mid season would help crowds. I know I definitely lose interest in the NRL comp between origin matches, particularly since I follow the Broncos and get frustrated watching them run around without their best players for several weeks.

What on earth are we doing for 3 weeks? It is boring as anything without club games!

I'll tell you what we'll be doing for 3 weeks, probably watching fumbleball sadly enough. AFL would be licking their lips at the prospect of that.

ive heard this trotted out and i think its BS.

Origin will be on during that time. if you're really worried that would happen put the origin on a friday night then

the current system devalues origin and the nrl

having it sandwiched like it is between NRL loses some of its spectacle, it should be put on a pedestal.

and during the origin period the NRL is a shambles in terms of crowds, and some games are practically reserve grade standard.

i said 17 wouldnt work, so i said 20 instead.

and i didnt say a lesser TV deal, just not as much as we could get if we sold out the game again. Do you like having broncos every friday or 8:10pm kickoffs on thursdays. Do you think monday games help crowds? they are all because we sold out the game to ch 9. if we DONT do that, we can boost ratings in the long term by having all games simulcast live on FTA and Fox as well as crowds.

we'll have 250million in the bank by then, use some of that.

Shocking comprehension skills.

aight apologies, didnt know gallop was taken off the commission.

you were right

dont see why it matters though.

that was the last media deal where ch9 had the last option thingy, so lets not sell out the game for a little extra money which compromises crowds and potentially ratings if games arent live.

Rubbish. Over that 3 week period you can have tests played between Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, PNG and cook islands. You could have Auckland vs counties in New Zealand. It could be a huge 3 weeks with a big game on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. Hardly a dearth of games to watch.

eactly, add in NZ and maybe England and France and it'd be great to watch.

sure international RL isn't massive yet, but i dont see why it can't. You have to embrace it for it to flourish. ANZAC tests and other games still pull solid crowds though despite the apparent disinterest of the public.

This.

Pacific Cup could be played in Western Sydney and Townsville, with the Final scheduled for the same week as the post-season ANZ Test (or whatever)

NZ Origin could be played.

Hopefully we could work with SL to have them break and run a Euro Cup, as well.

The TV would be full of footy and the smaller nations would get a boost.

It would work.

George, he is right mate. People get bored with nothing to watch and your opening the door to other sports if you only have one game to watch on any given weekend.
Other codes love it when they have free weekends. Even the AFL cottoned on the NRL was starting a couple weeks early each season and getting free airtime, so they closed that gap.

These days it is all about supply sports fans entertainment, if their is none to watch, they will soon go searching and watch what others are watching.

Origin is booming because we play it on Wednesday nights. We get free air.

I came up with a idea to start Origin on the Monday night, then 10 days later play the second game on the Wednesday. And then play the third and final game 10 days later on the Friday night.
That way you only lose players for two weekends.

I also come up with a idea of having a Exiles team on stand-by. ?

Hear me out, so if we ever get to a dead rubber after two games, then the third game is played against the exile team. ? Make it interesting and keep it exciting, instead of just watching a dead rubber game.
Either that or maybe the winner of Origin get to play a end of season game against a exile outfit.
Either way, we need to come up with some new exciting ideas. Standing still is going backwards.
Look at soccer and all their new comps throughout Europe.
Well rugby league needs to keep growing as well, or we be overtaken by AFL.

You mean like the Super League exiles?
Exiles are in the same bucket as the NRL all stars in having no real fans.
Like the Ashes theres still appeal in playing out the series due to the threat of whitewash.
Losing an origin series is bad, but going 3-0 is another level of failure.

A three weekend origin series could work, you'd just need a lot of co-operation from the RLIF (if they actually do anything nowadays), the NRL and the RFL to ensure the schedule wasn't completely empty besides origin.

Everyone wants to see more NZ v England after that semi, if origin is going to stand alone there's got to be something for everyone else to do.
France is at a level where any national side with a couple heritage players to call on could have a serious chance of beating them.
Italy, Scotland, maybe even PNG would be a good match up.

Pacific Cup is a decent idea, could keep those players alligned to PIs at the world cup and 4nations to stay aligned and not just flop to Australia because they wanna play origin. The whole concept could be a good 'stocking stuffer' ensuring the days and places without games get games.

It wouldn't get the TV money that the NRL would though.

This is a common theme on LU, of an invented format that suddenly people believe is worth millions of dollars in TV revenue and crowd interest.

I think the compromise is Origin on stand alone weekends spread through the year like in the early 2000's

Hear me out, so if we ever get to a dead rubber after two games, then the third game is played against the exile team. ? Make it interesting and keep it exciting, instead of just watching a dead rubber game.

That is the exact opposite of interesting.

So you guys would not watch NSW playing a exiles team stacked with poms islanders and kiwis, even a Victorian here or there and a Guy from Perth. ?

The whole idea is to grow the game. By introducing a exiles team in Australia, you give islanders, Kiwis and poms a team to cheer for, you give Victorians and West aussie if they have any players, picked in the exile team, a reason to cheer for them. The whole idea is to grow the game even further.

You say that there will be no interest in Queenslanders watchign their team take on a exile team that could have Shaun Johnson, the Burgess boys and sonny Bill along with Fornua from the Storm and James Graham and Sam Tomkins. ??

Really,,,, no wonder this game cant grow, if everyone thinks this way.
A exile team is a way to get everyone involved. That is the point of it, and to maybe even keep our top class players in our code, rather than them all running off to join Jonesy in Japan, or the Frogs in french Rugby.
Once they leave Australia, nobody no longer cares, so we all miss out.
The way things are going, our code will be left with only midgets, and with the muppets commentating .

And what about my idea of starting Origin on the Monday night, so we get free air, and the games then spread over 3 weeks with 10 day breaks for the players in between games. This is a brilliant idea.
The second game is still in the middle, on the Wednesday, (so two free air games), then the final if it is a blockbuster, we finish prime time on the Friday night. BOOM.

She dont get much better than that. Most of the byes could be on the last weekend, and of course on the first Monday night, that would be a bye night because Origin starts.
This idea is close to one of the best i have ever thought up. Not a word mentioned.

I will explain why.
You give players a full 9 day recovery which also involves weekends,
You open up the third game, so if Sydney has two games to fill, the second game is on the friday night. So everyone can attend. Vice versa for Brisbane and any other state that in the future might get the third game.

So i have just opened up the weekend market for the third game. ?? Genius or what. ?

Its not about us guys, we are League tragics, we will watch City v Country FFS.

Its about attracting interest from TV Channels and "casual" fans.

Creating an all-star game in the middle of the season won't create as much interest as playing a "dead rubber" Origin match will.

You can't manufacture passion for sports.

PS Run me through the great gamut of players from Perth and Victoria.

This and there's plenty of ways to involve players outside SOO without ruining SOO itself.
Kiwis and Poms should play as kiwis and poms not an 'all star' team.
If an all star match was played I don't think a single victorian or western australian would make the team so its not like fans from those states would have much to root for even if the 'all stars' concept got through.

The 9 day break for origin games sounds pretty workable though.
It'd be good to have some sort of extended break to try an ensure that players can play out the whole series.

Would love to hear about these new comps in Europe.
