Is Tim Paine most uninspiring captain Ever??

Steve Waugh had a very good batting average, pretty sure it was over 50. Interesting Mark Waugh didn't finish his career with a great average, I think it was only 41?

Steve Waugh was also extremely lucky to play in the era in which he did.

England: absolutely hopeless.
WI: started its decline which is still evident today.
India: only performed at home with no real superstars on the bowling front.
Pakistan: had the “two Ws” then performed at home only.
NZ: played well above its weight.
Zimbabwe: haven’t made any progress since 1983.
SA: the ONLY side to feature world class bowlers.

Whether intentionally designed to be rhetorical or otherwise, your second paragraph pretty much summarises my position.

Yes, the Australian Cricket Team (including its governing body, CA) should aspire to a higher standard than everyone else. What is fundamentally wrong with that? This goal was resoundingly achieved by the stance taken against those involved in “Sandpaper-gate”. Please don’t absolve Steve Smith’s involvement either; he admitted to knowing about the plan to bring a foreign, illegal object onto the field of play with the sole purpose of cheating. In his own words, he “turned a blind to it”. Legally, this is known as being an accessory after the fact.

Let me ask you a quickie. Given your belief that the ICC should be the only arbitrator in handing down punishments, are you are aware Sri Lankan captain, Angelo Mathews, was found guilty of ball tampering, and subsequently issued a woefully one match suspension by the ICC? Also, did you know this incident occurred not long after CA meted out its sanctions? If so, how is this (a ONE match ICC ban) a disincentive to prevent players from flouting the laws of the game?
The same standards should be applied to all countries. The ICC should be the ones who hand down their penalties and that should be final.

As for Mathews, I didn't even hear or read about it. The Australian media didn't care when players from other countries are caught ball tampering, but if an Australian gets caught, the Australian media whats their heads on a platter.

Very true Frank, and now the media is pushing for their return, the tele had headlines reading 88 more sleeps regarding Smith and warners return from exile.

They realise without a winning team, crowd numbers fall, tv ratings fall, newspapers sell less, ha ha ha....suck eggs to the media.

Now they have changed their tune.

So if Paine is not the answer who is? Cummins ? Some in the media put him forward this week because of his performance. Yes he bowled brilliantly and he scored good runs at a time when others failed. Mind you he was dropped on 2 from what should have been a straight forward catch but he fought on brilliantly and has become a genuine alrounder. Paine is doing a good job with the side he has. Overall I do think so. Yes he has made a couple of questionable leadership decisions, but so did a former captain we know. Yes we will be a totally different side when Smith and co. return to the side. How would Paine go with that side under him? Paine has had to deal with a shit situation and maybe things will change when our old captain, Warner, comes back into the side.

I hate ‘ we just did what every other side in the world does’ argument. We were warned by match officials after the first test about possible interference to the ball so I think we have been keeping up with the others even before that fateful test. Yes the punishment was out of proportion with what has been handed down to other international players but our public’s reaction was probably driven by our belief that our team would be above all that stuff, much the same as we would like to think that anyone wearing the RedV is above reproach. The big difference for us was what we used......sandpaper. If another country uses an angle grinder I for one will forgive them.
By the way I can’t believe Smith admitted that he knew what was going on but chose to ‘not see it’. A captain in action? Paine doesn’t look incompetent when you look at this context.

Public’s reaction was exactly that, a knee jerk reaction
Since then, the sentiment has changed
More than 80% want smith and warner back
And most say do it now
The public quickly realised they were knee jerking
Now they are begging we have them back
So are most of the media
We probably did think our team was above it
But I don’t give a rats......
It was a bit of ball tampering, get them back in, move on

IMO Tim Paine is a brilliant wicketkeeper and probably the best and only option to lead this team at present. His only flaws are that he's average with the bat in hand and follows 6 others that are poor to bog average. He can certainly lead a team with integrity, but he's not Jesus Christ resurrecting our woeful batsman.

Whoever wins the toss and bats today wins the test.
Paine has one job, win the fricken toss!
He lost the toss.....again
And the score mounts.....180 and counting down to 450
It seems the man Paine can’t do anything right
Not his fault, the toss is luck.....but you make your own luck

SOS SMITH and DAVEY WARNER.....We need mongrels who will kick some ass

Not his fault, bad luck, but he makes his own luck with the coin toss?

WTF are u on about mate?
When you ain’t a winner, when you have no hard edge, things go against you.
Surely you understand this, winners find ways to win,
When you are not a winner, the weather, the TOSS, a missed catch, a no ball, all go against you.

You might call it bad luck, you might call it chance......I call it for what I see it is, a man who isn’t used to winning, continuing his runs of outs....even at the toss.
You think it’s pure chance that Paine has lost every toss bar one?

Or is it simply a man not used to winning .....finding ways to keep losing.
Even the toss will become part of his folk lore.....how the hell do you lose every toss bar one?
Bad luck huh?
No, just the wrong choice.....again and again and again.

I don't know what's more shameful; the sandpaper, or bowling Khawaja and Finch in consecutive tests. Aussies have absolutely nothing.
