Keep Mary

You talk about 1 lousy spot on the ladder. If you honestly can not see them improvement in this both with attack and defence stats to back it up, stay on the bong. You are to far gone. Just wear a helmet to bed, remember that ceiling
And that is why you're not the coach, no room for improvement.

I was one of the first ones to say sack Mary, and will again if he flops, nothing wrong with that, however I'm actually stoked he is proving me wrong this year at least, I'm proud of him that amongst all the shots fired at him he has/is coming out the other end with some success, I do hope and wish he succeeds as I've stated before I'd rather one of our own if possible and Mary is one of our own.

I don't care how he does it just as long as he does it.

One thing is for sure if he continues on his path of improvement which ultimately converts to success it'll be because of his tenacity... and that's good enough for me.

McGregor has had a shift in his coaching philosophy - not a lazy one like he had last year ("durrrrr power game, durrr play what's in the front of you") but his approach to the team and structure is different to what it has been the last few years.

BUT

There are still massive deficiencies that are being covered up by our wins. I hope we dont fade like past years but its not even halfway through Year 1 of a 2 year contract. Anyone looking to extend him at any point before Round 20 next year is a f**king mad man. WE've been through 3.5 years of complete shit under his reign, he has a lot of negative credit built up that wont go away from winning a few games.

If he makes the Top 4 OR GF qualifier, he earns the second year of his contract. That's it. otherwise, he should GTFO.

Anything less than top 4 is fail for me..hope we maintain the rage but origin will be a real test for mcgregor as well as injuries that may follow ..the players look happy and united in their ways so far and all talk highly of him
do you know what games we will be without our origin players?

I am starting this thread because I honestly believe this. For the following reasons
1. Like many other clubs he had a new half, 5/8 combo to coach. Ours have been the most successful, easily. It is common knowledge that he persuaded Hunt to come to the club, after all Hunt could have gone where he liked and got the same money.
2. He has got the best out of Vaughan and Sims.
3. People on this forum wanted him and Millard gone when they refused to give Dugan what he wanted. He and Millward were right.
4. He has had the balls to admit he is still learing the role.
5. People who have forgotten more about football than any of us would know, Phil GOULD, believe he is doing a fantastic job
6. Lastly but most importantly, look at the players concentration at half time in the sheds when he is talking. They take in every word he says. Vaughan, Frizzell and Sims idolise the guy.
O’Kay I am ready for it. I have my Ned Kelly body armour on, give it to me both barrels

Good on you buddy, I'm with ya !
Mary is doing a great job, don't listen to all the doomsayers, they're best ignored if you want to just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Thanks mate I will take your advice. I will sit back and enjoy the ride and if people think I am a dickhead for having the balls to say what I believe, well I can live with that

It’s swings and roundabouts with coaching.

Maguire and Hasler have won comps and are now unemployed. Green, Bennett, Flanagan and Robinson are overseeing teams who aren’t performing anywhere near their potential. Yet nuffies like Mary, Griffin and Kearney are on top of the comp for now.

Coaching ability is only part of the equation. A happy playing group, no injuries and a lot of luck are needed as well.

If we make the top 4 and go deep into the finals this year, I see no reason to replace Mary. If we fade out like last year with this roster, then guys like Maguire and Hasler need to be seriously looked at.

And then wait for Hasler and Macguire to fade out again before sacking them too. :)

I read your post and just don't agree with your reasoning.
  1. 1. He had halves combinations he couldn't coach and we are lucky that Hunt is a cut above all other halves we have had. I give little credit to anyone other than Hunt on this point.
  2. IMO Vaughan is not playing as well as he did last year however I do agree re Sims playing well but he had him for 2 years before Graham arrived and got very little out of him. More the input from Graham than the coach IMO.
  3. He had the opportunity to get Dufty into the team earlier and didn't take it and only injury forced the change. Mc Fookknuckle was on record as saying while he remained coach Dugan would be FB so doesn't that mean if we retained Dugan he would be in the 1 jumper. Any change in that area was forced on him by the injury to Aitken.
  4. Should have had the decency to go elsewhere to learn the role instead of being paid to learn here. Not just him though many of our worst coaches had the same latitude.
  5. f**k Gould can't stand him and don't give a shit for his opinion.
  6. They are paid to listen to him and do his bidding so best they listen at half time. As to whether they idolise him or not is a mute point the key is, is what they are listening to and the tactics employed going to win us a comp. I am sure many other teams that aren't going as well as we are presently also have players that idolise their coach. I do concede that a happy playing group is better than a team of egotists.
  7. Last but not least you asked for it both barrels so I obliged so no need for you to get nasty and insinuate I need pills or people to assist me. If you don't like it then best you don't ask for it.
I am a Mary critic but I can get on board with all of this.

There are still two big points he needs to prove though for this side to win a game or two in September:
1. Can he manage the bench to the point where there is something left in the tank in August?
2. Once teams start to work out what Saints are doing and start to exploit that in the second half of the year, does he have any answers?

In past years he has failed on both of these fronts. If Mary has some answers this year, and the side stays relatively injury free, then it is going to be a great season!

For me he has had plenty of time and chance . if we don't make top 4 or better sack him ......

Keep Mary? He still has another year so he really is not going anywhere and extending his contract? Why would you when you can just wait till next year to see how he has gone?

If Mary gets Saints top 4 then that is pretty good and if they play well enough they will make the GF but it only takes 1 ref blunder and your out of the finals. You cannot crucify the guy if that happens.

Mary has got the best of the players that is for sure because before he came to the club under Price, Saints were a laughing stock and the pack was often criticised as being soft (especially Mason when on the field). Mary fixed that asap. Now it is 1 of the toughest.

He has had to make some tough calls to fix the joint in letting go of BMoz and Merrin and has replaced them with cheaper options which are coming good now.

Fair enough. But you can blame Mary if the side is in first place after 8 rounds, then plays exhausted in the second half of the year and tumbles out of the top 8. Wonder where we have seen that before? I am looking forward to that being corrected this year.
