Face it if they did this in Sydney it would be embarrassing.
You wouldn't attempt this in Sydney. That does not mean you should move games away from suburban venues that are drawing well. They should have canvassed clubs who were happy to do this, rather than forcing it down their throats.

The NRL wants fans to buy memberships but forces a reduction in what that membership buys. It is like the Government decreeing that a litre of petrol would now be 900ml, without the price changing.

You might be surprised how many away fans turn up to Broncos games in Brisbane. eg Lang Park gets more Manly fans attending than that stinking swamp they call Brookvale.

I get that regular Sydney RL attendees, all 450 of them, might be annoyed to lose a game and yeah they should be compensated in some way but overall/big picture I think it's a good idea to change things up a little from time to time

Look at Souths. They have to play 9 games in Sydney. 10 in NSW. If they are home team it means no game for Perth or Cairns both of whom are better getting more games than Brisbane

f**k this is mind-numbingly dumb from somebody that should know better.

Firstly, I doubt clubs "weren't canvassed at all". You're just trotting out the same Penrith crap Gus has tweeted and half the fanbase seems to be echoing.

The clubs who play as "home" teams at Suncorp in Magic Round will almost certainly be clubs who already take games away. The first two obvious ones are Manly and Melbourne, for them this is the double header Suncorp game. Then:
  • Gold Coast are only contracted for 10 Cbus games. They'll probably go to T'ba or Gladstone again, and likely be a home team on Magic Round.
  • Souths deal with Cairns ended this season and I'm not sure they're locked in @ Perth at the moment either.
  • Canterbury take 3 games away from ANZ usually - 2 x Belmore (down to 1 next year wouldn't surprise), and have been to Adelaide, Perth, NZ and even Brisbane in the last decade.
  • Wests Tigers took home games to Tamworth and Auckland this year - they'd likely switch one to Brisbane
  • NZ are well supported in QLD and occasionally take a home game away from Mt Smart
  • The Roosters aren't locked in to Adelaide as far as I know so that could be shifted to Brisbane
  • The Cowboys might want to be a home team for this given it's their home state (probably not but still possible)
Either way, there'll be money on the table for any club who decides/has decided to use it as their home game.

As for "reduction in memberships" - as shown above, most clubs' membership packages already account for reduced games as more than half the comp take games to other markets.

With Roosters losing Allianz next year I would imagine they would be a certainty to be the home team for a Magic Weekend game.

Odd, I read an article the other day that implied the Roosters were keen for SA Govt to commit to a new deal. There you go.

Anyway as has been said above with SFS out of action next year, it would make sense for the Roosters to be a magic home team... especially given their visits to Suncorp are reasonably rare.

Yeah let's take games from
Tamworth, Perth etc to have more games in Brisbane. Only in the NRL does it make sense

What I posted was speculation. You and your fellow fanbase who are oddly the main ones objecting to this event, are jumping to wild conclusions as though the entire schedule is somehow already locked away and Penrith have been shortchanged or some such bullshit.

It's not locked in yet apart from Manly hosting Brisbane on Friday, at all.

Yes that would make sense with the SFS out of action but funny enough I am still waiting for another twist and turn in this whole SFS rebuild/ ANZ upgrade or redevelopment with Gladys in charge, nothing would surprise me.

Wasn't there something about building certifiers not allowing events to be held there next year anyway, regardless of the rebuild status? Due to the narrow walkways, poor design and concrete cancer etc

My only criticism so far is scheduling the broncos and manly for a Friday night. Wouldn't Broncos v Cowboys the best game to kick off an event?

If he considers it not in the interests of his club, who am I to argue. Or you for that matter.

That is a marquee match that would fill the ground on its own. It would be a waste to include it in an event like this IMHO.

Tbf more games in Brisbane does make sense, just that this isnt the way to do it! It is RL so give it a couple of years and it’ll be abandoned anyway.

If the Saturday line up looks good we’ll probably fly over for it (Storm v Cronulla on sat night please :) )

Manly are happy to take their home game to Brisbane. They've been doing it for a few years now. Presumably they need the money. Not every Sydney club is in this position, though.

Those clubs that take games to country areas do it in order to spread their brand. They spread their brand where they think it will do the most good, not where the NRL tell them they must.

Manly-Brisbane has been at Suncorp as a Manly home game already for several years so this will just be an extension of that. Also, it'll be the second game - there'll be a 6pm Friday game to "kick it off".

I'm also not sure the best way to do a double header is to use an already marquee fixture that routinely draws 40k+ every year?

I'd make each of the 8 games a Penrith home game.
Additionally since there will be no entertainment in Sydney that weekend everyone is invited over to Phil Gould's place where his house will get torched for an episode of Better Homes and Gardens. Bring your marshmallows.
