The opening Fake in Perth last year was an NRL event T-Boon that clubs got financial benefit from being part of. NRL controlled the marketing, ticketing and Govt negotiations. Was a great success.

This will be much bigger.

Bit like the friday 6pm game which if I recall at the time you were saying we couldn't call a shit decision as they hadn't happened, guess what, they are shit!
It's a message board full of opinion, barring an incredulous result it has come at the expense of double headers which have evidenced success so on that basis alone, unless it is an outstanding success with 35-50k crowds each of the 3 days then it is a shit decision. But yet lets wait to confirm it lol

As for it works in England, so does the Challenge Cup are you suggesting we should introduce that as well? How keen where the Qland Govt, what benefits have the NRL got out of this?
LOL what does the Friday 6pm timeslot have to do with Magic Weekend? For what it's worth it's rating well so I'm not sure it'd be considered a complete failure. I think most agree it's a better proposition than Monday 7pm as well.

As for double headers having evidenced success - 36k for one of the first events at a brand new 50k venue isn't what I'd call "evidenced success".

Assuming sub 35k crowds is your issue. You obviously have a pessimistic outlook on life - or someone at NRL HQ has run over your dog and never been charged.

As for the Challenge Cup, I don't see why such a concept couldn't work here? The FFA with a much smaller interest base have the FFA Cup (albeit with higher participation rates at local level), I'd like to see such a concept take off locally here.

It was 38,824 and nearly double the highest previous NRL record for a crowd in Perth, add in the money the WA Govt paid for the privilege and yeh Id say a big success!

Thread needs a poll.

Are you attending Magic Weekend 2019:

Yes [ ]

No [ ]
Dont really think that will tell us much, from what I can gather the only people that aren't interested in the concept are on this forum. As I've said previously there are quite a few people travelling from WA for the event, a lot of which are AFL supporters going for a weekend away. Of all the people I've spoken to I cant say I've seen a negative response, my brothers still live in NSW and they know lots of people who have already booked their trip.
Looking on Ticketek and Bronze is down to single seats for most days, Diamond only has availability i the upper tier so looks like ticket sales are going ok. Again, outside of this forum its actually got a positive vibe to it, we are meeting up with 40 odd people in Brisbane travelling from different parts of the country, cant wait.

We're not travelling as a group of 40, we have 5 of us going from over here. Speaking with friends and family that are going as well in various groups we have worked out there will be about 40 of us, some people that I haven't seen for over 20 years.
Hopefully the Tigers can hand the Panthers a beating on Friday and then it will be a great weekend, otherwise i'll spend the next couple of days drowning my sorrows!!

Just purchased 5 diamond seats for Friday in the upper tier - 601. Diamond was the only category I could get 5 seats and it looks like limited seats available in the other areas.

5 of us travelling from different parts of the Northern Territory. 3x league fans and 2x AFL fans.

You would think the weekend would be a big opportunity for each club to sell Brisbane/Qld memberships so there could be a big boost to clubs there. Some of the Sydney teams have big followings in Brisbane so hopefully they get behind the idea.

If you look at the UK

Magic weekend has been slightly below a regular week average from day one and has been steady declining over the years

I like it because all 8 games are on TV here in Australia rather just 2. But thats not issue for the NRL fan

But looking at matching a NRL average of 16k you would need the following to meet the weekend average
- Thursday - 16k
- Friday - 32k
- Saturday - 48k
- Sunday - 32k

But a big difference to a regular weekend you will be getting 10-20k people who will be attending more than one day - while on a regular NRL weekend they are different people

At a extreme you coukd get the same person counted 4 times

While this is normally true, I'm fairly sure all 6 (or 7 last year) games are broadcast for Magic Weekend in SL.

It should incease crowds at all the other rounds as well since the same amount of fans/feet will be going to 11 home games rather than 12. So it has that positive effect on crowds.

Not really. The home teams are the Titans, Wests Tigers, Manly, Bulldogs, Warriors, Storm, Roosters and Rabbitohs - all eight of whom have taken one or more games on the road for at least a couple of years.

The only change from last year's home game allocations for any of those clubs is the Warriors who had all 12 at home last year, the other seven all went on the road in 2018 at least once, some up to 3 times.

the Thursday game will probably be poorly attended - unless they have good music. They should offer $5 tickets (or free tickets) to Thursday for anyone going to Saturday.

Awaits a season long debate about how the magic weekend crowds should be counted in crowd avg's lol

We just need to wait and see how this goes.

The NRL has doen 2 things that isn't helping their case though. The first is the Thursday game, it completely defeats the purpose of the concept and needs to be changed going forward. The 2nd is the Wests/Penrith fixture. Basic maths tells us there has to be one all Sydney fixture but this was the wrong one.

Because sht decisions need to be called out, not just passively accepted. MAybe if we knew why the NRL decided to do this (maybe it means better stadium deals in Qland?) As for will it to have the best result, I'll probably spend a couple of thousand going along to it, is that good enough for you?

That is a what RL needs more. The stadium deals up there are a disgrace
