Marvel Super Heroes

The alternate jersey I can understand. All teams and all codes have it. And ours is kind of classy this year, imo. The heritage jersey, when it occurs, I can also appreciate as it is celebrating something worthy and important. Even the Charity Shield jersey I can get behind - it’s a trial match, no biggie.

But rubbish like this I can not rationalise at all. It is selling out a vital element of what makes this club what it is, for a few pieces of silver. It’s bad enough that the red v has already become a gaudy V8 racing-style collage of sponsors; it’s bad enough that we’ve all but abandoned our traditional home grounds. But to whore out our revered uniform to any one entity – let alone a Hollywood superhero franchise, the worst kind of commercial profiteering tripe – is a bridge too far.

The “for the kids” argument doesn’t work for me. Other sports are able to attract young fans without turning their jerseys into superhero outfits. I somehow managed to fall in love with St George in the early 80’s even though the club failed to attach it’s brand to Christopher Reeve’s Superman. The players themselves were my superheroes. I’ll be taking my young nephew to his first game in a few weeks, hoping he’ll be seduced just as I was at his age. It turns out he may be watching a 80 minute movie advertisement, instead of the historic, storied, beloved Red V of my youth.

Is nothing sacred in rugby league anymore? If the club itself does not care about the red v, then why should I?

There's a lot to that. I also fell in love with the Red V as a kid, for the Red V's sake and the players I idolised.
Maybe kids expect more today, I don't know. They do grow up in a more commercialised world that is for sure. For me though the purity of the blood red on the white, the old badge, they still stir some emotion in me that even as a grown man I don't understand. It's visceral.

Looks great. Take ur head out of your ass and take it for what it's worth a one off promotion that puts out name out there.

Puts our name out there alright: the St George Illawarra Marvel Ironmen from Homebush.

It looks almost as tacky as the tacky cross-promotion itself. Embarrassing

Dog shit.

You can almost imagine the NRL leadership and CEO's meeting . Attaching the game to an iconic global brand , moving forward in a seamless synergistic proactive way that maximises the brand moving forward. A holistic platform which enables the game to advertise at the marquee stadiums allowing a frictionless partnership for the future model of the vision.. Bullshit covered spin doctors all of them.

I'd say you've typed out the meeting minutes verbatim there Ted.

Why haven't the Australian Cricket Board explored the lucrative synergy opportunities in monetizing the baggy green cap to cross-promote the Ninja Turtles? They are behind the times my friend

The attitude of making money above all else has trickled down and enveloped everything within the game, from clubs to players and now to fans if this thread is anything to go by. There is precious little romance or idealism left in the game these days, and it is these qualities which truly attracts people in my opinion - look at the abovementioned baggy green cap on Boxing Day for example, or even our own traditional Anzac Day game. I like to think of our club as the most romantic and idealist of all, and to see us stooping to this level is, for me, a sad reflection of the state of the code as a whole.

Making money is important of course, but the costs should be considered as well as the benefits. I don't think the NRL does that enough.

Yeah I know, wasn't directed at you, Tru. I'm just on a stream-of-consciousness style ranting streak here. It's something I'm passionate about and want to discuss!!!

As much as I hate the move from our traditional home grounds, at least in some way you could argue that it shows a bit of vision, a bit of hope for the future. That the shift is allowing for growth in the game. The argument could be made.

But the prevalance of things like gambling sponsorship, plastering playing kits with half a dozen sponsors, and selling them out entirely for novelty "events" like this Marvel nonsense lacks vision. It's short-sighted. Rugby league is the only sport I really follow, but with shit like this going on it is difficult to dispel the notion that the game is low rent.

I think the plan is to target the very young and make as much cash as possible as they expect to lose some baby boomers and traditionalists with the big stadium policy. Just my thought

Short term profit... Or they intend to make this annual offer and "force " families to dish out for super heroes jerseys each year. Much like our kids with the PS$ or Xbox... gotta get the latest version of black ops dad...

Our strip should have 2 options... the Red v, and our alternate/gong strip. Anzac day strip is a rort... why not poor more money into the vets struggling with health and accommodation, rather than spending money on a new strip. Its a traditional day, keep it that way.

By the way, who profits here... Marvel ? ISC? CLUB?

I don't know that they 'expect to lose' people FT, but I've no doubt that in part it's about capturing the imagination and hence long term interest of the young. That I can understand, although I question to what extent a stunt like this would do so. In the main it's about short term $$$.

I'm not enthused about this stuff, but I won't be lost because of it either. Most won't. As supporters we are more inert than that.
