even if it is reddy that is to shoulder the blame, how does this absolve Smith?

Brian recruited Reddy to the club.....not to mention the fact that our problems are of some THREE YEARS standing, which means one of two things:

1) it took Brian three years to work out reddy was the problem - not good enough

2) or brian knew all along that we hada problem with reddy and persisted with him for THREE YEARS

either way, the alleged failure of Rod Reddy is a failure on behalf of the head coach

An employer/manager/supervisor is vicariously liable for the professional actions of his subordinates and staff....in this instance, where Brian has actively cultivated a situation over the past seven years where he is the beginning and end of the club, Brian must shoulder the blame for the alleged failure of Rod Reddy over the past THREE years!

If that is actually the case of course.....

Well, in my view, in 2002 and 2003 our defense was stronger than this year, but our attack absolutely sucked.

This year, our defense was much weaker but we could actually manage to score points.

This is in general terms - games like the Tigers at Parra are the exception.

I say sack him altogether. He is not doing a good job - why do we insist on letting the players come to us before we tackle them? Watch the Doggies, Chooks, Penno - they all move forward from the 10m defensive line and meet the opponent halfway.

   walker smith....well said mate!!!!!!!

ahh, good to see some people who are willing to pull the wool back away from there eyes and see what's really going on

i mean it would be easy to blame a subordinant in this type of situation wouldn't it??? but exactly my point walker smith.....at the end of the day, the head coach is exactly that....the head coach and if he doesn't like soemthing that is going on in a certain aspect of the coaching....well bloody well fix it???

the thing that gets me is that it is not easy to blame someone else for the team's shortcommings when it is common public knowledge that BS has been put in charge of virtually everything at the club in his role at head coach including coaching, recruitment and retention (of both players and coaches)????

doesn't that tell you soemthing???? Its time to go.....Brian!!!!!!!!!!!!

But walker if someone has a contract with the main organisation, it is a little harder to just get rid of him.

Also our defensive pattern had to change from 2001 to now, So we would have had to of given it some time.

In the end of the year except the game against the Roosters, our defence was starting to shape up. But our defence did make a major U turn after the bye. I am almost sure this is when we signed Sharp and I think Reddy was told the news.

I have the feeling that Reddy will be at the club next year, but in a much deminished capacity. I think he will be recruitment officer, Sharp and Anderson as assistants, Brian as Head Coach and JT as Premier League coach.

so, tell me if your theory is right Mark....(and i'm not having a go at you)

but how does a first grade coach who has seen his world-beating, historically unmatched team tumble to also ran also-rans over three years....stay as first grade coach and then have 2 successful former first grade coaches come into the club to work under him????

why is it that he apparently needs so much help, could it be that he has lost the ability to coach successfully???

if anything at all happens, i think BS will be moved to Coaching Director and Anderson may become head coach and sharp as assistant

i mean after all....will an International coach (Anderson) be happt to be an assistant in first grade????

Well the thing is Sharp and Anderson were involved in the club in Junior positions, and they know that Brian has 2 years left on his contract. Coaches are intelligent and patient people, I think you will find one of these is the heir apparent, I just don't know which one it will be, I think we will have to wait and see how things turn out in the next 2 seasons.

Or it could be Sharp to assistant coach (as he was under Bellemy at the storm this year) and Anderson to head coach with Smith as Coaching Co-ordinator. Or it could be, Defensive coach Sharp, Forwards Coach Anderson, Halves Coach JT. Brian Smith head coach co-ordinating all of them.

the thing with BS as coaching director seems the most likely to me as i said....

but you suggesting a havles coach, forwards coach, defensive coach and then BS as head coach.....i'm sorry but too many cooks spoi the broth???

its not friggin NFL.....or not yet anyway, going on that scenario we may as well have a halfback coach, a kicking coach, a kicking tee bringing out coach, a coaches coach, a waterboy coach, a tackling bag putting away coach etc etc???

realistically i think ther should be:

a head coach
an assitant coach

then a gap to:

a head trainer (and other trainers)
a strength and conditioning trainer
a recruitment officer
a club doctor

i actually think having a straight-out defensive coach is bordering on over-kill and i think simplicity is the answer........too many coaches just confuses people

But walker if someone has a contract with the main organisation, it is a little harder to just get rid of him

Just as a response, i note that teh club has had little problem getting rid of other unsatisfactory employees in the past....and i also note that most moderately successful organisations (not necessarily football) need to make hard decisions to progress.

An employee contract can be broken with an agreement as to consideration or damages suffered by the party at loss....in this case, it would be a matter of the club paying out reddy's contract or arranging a severance/ termination package of sufficient remunerative measure!

And before anyone bleats that it costs money to pay out contracts, i note that what needs to be weighed is the money it would cost to terminate an underperforming employe, against the damage suffered through constant poor performance! In the end this decision is smith's....and he has obviously chosen to persist with reddy, for whatever reason!

If he has chosen to persist with reddy because he cant break the contract, then Smith must wear the blame for reddy's alleged poor performance, because he initially contracted him!!

The corollary of Brian's assumption of total control is ultimate accountability....ultimately, he is accountable for the poor performance of his employees and his inability to remedy the situation...for contractual reasons of his creation or otherwise!

Its harsh, but thats the real world!

Well Other successfull clubs already have Forwards coachs, defensive coaches, and others.

Dean Pay was defensive coach for the Roosters in 2002. They also had Gus Gould as Coaching Director since 2000. Crusher Cleal "left" with a year to go on his deal to be forwards coach at manly.

But to fill in your roster as above as it stands right now.

Head Coach, Brian Smith
Assistant Coach, Peter Sharp
Head Trainer, Craig Catarick
S and C Trainer, Hayden Knowles.
Club Doctor, Dr (Death) Johnson (best knee man in the game, did Joeys Knee this year)
Recuitment officer (Speculation) : Rod Reddy.

Premier league Coach : Jason Taylor

But to be honest the PL and the 1st's sides would train together and against each other so. JT will be at all the 1st's sessions as well.

Walker, you are right is it ultimatly Brians Responsability, but in saying that I believe he has broken with the club to move him on. (see my original Post)

Thanks for all that info Mark.

Even if people are dissatisfied with Brian since 2002 (and I am one of them), you have to pretty much accept that he will still be at the club, and so looking at helping the structures below in the meantime is the way to go.

I already like it better with Sharp and JT (and Anderson) in main coaching roles. If the results are still not forthcoming in early 05, it will make it easier for Brian to move to a coaching director role and for these guys to take over more of the hands on stuff, if that is where any problem is deemed to lie.

What's all the fuss over Mateo. He displays soem potential but did not exactly set the world on fire once he moved up to PL.

One post says he was disinterested in ganes late in the year, I would say that this was the case most of the year. He plays well at time but as often as not dissapoints in ganes.

Mateo has needs to work on his consistancy and one on one defence before he can be consideres for firsts, if ever.

I think there were a lot of players that seemed a bit disinterested in patches playing first grade through the year too...

Hopefully what Newmanj and MITS have said about Sharp coming in as a support to Smith and smoothing over factions with players interests at heart will get the guys as a whole motivated again! As we know many of them are capable of so much more than they are showing, whether it's been a matter of them carrying injuries or carrying attitudes.

Greena...that could have a lot to due with maturity as well. I know ALL of the Junior Kangaroos that have come and gone don't set the world on fire but I think in any event a club that has Junior Kangaroos on their books should be pushing their barrow.

I haven't seen much of Feliti but he musn't be too bad to rep for Australia at junior level.
