One of my friends bands played their debut show a few weeks ago in Sydney, here's a clip from it (my mate's the drummer):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xl6eTmQnNhI

Their demo is free to download from their website too at http://deadriverrunsdry.bandcamp.com/ .

The NZ scene's been churning in some brutal shit recently, Witchrist, Vassafor, Diocletian and Heresiarch all kill.

Death metal is awesome and deathcore is shit, basically ;)

If what I'm listening to is death core then I strongly disagree.

All these different names for metal are a massive wank anyhow..

What's wrong with simply calling it either metal, death metal or weird shite?

Because death metal sounds nothing like melodic death metal sounds nothing like doom death etc etc.

Then just simply call it metal and be done with it.

Can you explain to me the difference between death metal and death core?

If you're referring to traditional death metal they sound nothing alike whatsoever. I mean, we're talking Cannibal Corpse v Killswitch Engage here, yes?

I agree with Mong. All the metal sub-sub genres are one massive wank.

Oh certainly once you start getting to sub-sub genres it becomes ridiculous. It's almost at the point where every single band has their own ssg.

But in terms of the basic sub-genres, they do come in handy when it comes to looking for relevant bands to listen to.

ie. I have no interest in listening to metalcore so it would be nice to know if a band fits into that category before I waste my time listening to them.

I think he's talking "who gives a shit?" No other genre of music tries so hard trying to micro-categorise every single act.

I think it comes from the fact metal fans in general so deathly afraid of being seen to be conformists in any way. Thus they must continually divide themselves so no-one can accuse them of liking somethig that is popular.

To be fair, no other genre has such variety, but yes I really don't see a need for all the sub sub sub sub sub sub genres.

Was listening to Vassafor - Obsidian Codex again last night, what a f**king monter of an album. Almost 100 minutes of black/death/doom, only available on double vinyl, cult as f**k.

Its because a lot of autistic nerds listen to metal and they feel the need to categorise everything. My brother in law watches tv shows and applies a numerical score to it based on aspects he likes. For example if he was watching an episode of Seinfeld he would give kramers entrance a score out of ten

he is very into putting bands into sub sub sub genres.

Deathcore is death metal with hardcore elements, pure death metal lacks those.

If you were going to be specific I'd say shouty vocals, slam breakdowns etc.

A borrowed musical element from Hardcore Punk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardcore_punk

"groove metal" is a pretty ridiculous one though as it only really covers two well known bands (Pantera and Exhorder) and the "genre" only seemed to start getting bandied around after both had slit up.

Al lot of those "genres" on that map thing aren't really genres at all as much as discriptions anyway, especially the one's based on location. I think it's perfectly fine to talk about Swedish style death metal or the Canadian Ross Bay Cult sound, but they're just reference points rather than actual genres.

The thing about genres and sub-genres though is that it depends upon who it is that is seeking the information. For someone that isn't really a metal fan, calling something black metal is more than adequate.

However, for a metal fan there is a huge different between Norwegian black metal (darkthrone etc), symphonic black metal (Dimmu), blackened death (such as Opeth's Morningrise) and whatever it is that you call Cradle of Filth.

Agreed, HD. and I reckon thats important when a lot of info is gleaned by reading websites/magazine, you need decent descriptions of a band's sound.

I'd class Cradle of Filth in the symphonic camp by the way. And just to be picky "Norwegian black metal" should be "second-wave norwegian black metal" if you're referring to the classic Darkthrone etc type sound (low fi production, tremelo picking, screeched vox etc).
