Michael Hagan quits as Parramatta Eels coach

I cannot wait dor Anderson to arrive. The Prima donnas can all go as far as I'm concerned. Also players who are more concerned with their next tattoo then the next game can follow them.

PS

In the Australian Anderson is quoted as saying that the Parra job is something that he is very interested in and is a dream come true if it comes to fruition. This is exactly the type of coach we need.
thing is that with anderson there will be consistency. one of my gripes about hagan's style is he is too relaxed and settled.

he went from being dr. jekkyl to mr. hyde back to dr. jekkyl. while it seemd to work for the late part of the season i think that players need to be kept in line from day one. i think it is one of brian smith's strengths. i think that under brian we had less disciplinary issues in 9 1/2 years than we did under hagan this year.

anderson, if he becomes our coach, will draw a line and kick anyone's arse that steps over it.

i also think he will devise a playing strategy that revolves around the strengths of our players rather than a reactive approach of "boring football".

i agree, he is exactly the type of coach we need.

I personally don;t put much stock in labelling generations and generalizing charateristics to them.

BUT: The fact is that the attitude of our core playing group led both Brian Smith AND Michael Hagan (at least in part) to resign early.

This suggests that we will need much more than just a change of coach.
i disagree. that core group was pretty much the same in 05 under brian and from memory, kept out of trouble. they lost their way only when brian stopped giving a crap leading into 06 when he was on his way out. i think the coaches attitude rubs off on the players and that's where hagan's uber-relaxed personality got us into trouble this year.

he seems like a hell of a good bloke when you talk to him but i think (as someone posted elsewhere) that it will only go so far.

Another interesting point. If you have ParraTV have a look at the interview Hayden Knowles did with Daniel Wagon.

I remember a quote something like "Its good that we have a coach like Hages now that I am an old bloke"

Do you think Wayne Bennett puts up with this sort of crap?

.

I can tell you that the main reason the Broncos players have acted up so badly in the last year was because of Wayne Bennett.

Benny had really taken the foot off the throat regarding discipline in the club, a point that infuriated Ivan Henjak who is a really tough hombre. When the boss lets the boys play up - they really play up (Sound familiar? )

Look forward to seeing a really tough Broncos in the years ahead and a Saints team that will go well for about 1 season ,then collapse and Benny retires.

I recall Hayne said that he was scared of facing Belamy if he screwed up.

I hope Andersen scares him too!

Smith's resignation came following the Smith and Riddell failure to train while they were at the pub didn't it? I don;t know you can say he stopped giving a crap. That doesn't sound like Brian Smith to me. I think that there was an enormous attitude drop by players when the admin announced he was there for one more year but not thereafter. Smith felt that the situation was untenable and the team would be better off with a different coach.

Hagan's resignation is in circumstances where he feels in part the player's attitude was impeding any success, and where everyone knew he wouldn't be resigned, and almost certainly wouldn't be sacked. Hagan felt that the situation was untenable and the team would be better off with a different coach.

So the club's policy is not to sack coaches but to create an untenable situation where the coach eventually resigns. This saves the club money but appears to cause severe short term damage to the team, morale and performance.

Shows where DF's priorities lie. It also suggests we can't assume that getting rid of Hagan will launch us into the top four.

There are real attitude problems to overcome.

Obviously Gronk will be on here to tell us how the resignations of Smith and now Hagan are actually masterclasses in successful administration, but I feel a bit differently about that.

Hoepfully Anderson is smart enought to look at the previous scenario and try to learn from it.

Hoepfully he is clever enough to orchestrate a cleanout of deadwood in the playing ranks (in terms of not just age or performance but attitude).

Excellent post Bigfella !

I do strongly believe that Anderson or no Anderson, 2009 will still be a write off for us. 2010 onwards should be a different story....

yeah he did resign after smith/riddell incident but that wasn't the catalyst for his resignation.

shortly after brian was told he wouldn't be our coach beyond 2006 his commitment dropped. he had packed up and taken away much of his belongings from his office and reportedly wasn't spending the massive extra hours devising strategies or disecting all things football.

when he was given the appointment for the knights in 07 he asked (i'm not sure how many of) his support staff to follow him to newcastle which they declined. this was followed by a childish "i'm not talking to you" behaviour from brian, which had an adverse affect on the team. soon after we were 2-8 at from our first ten games, that same weekend came the tim and pig incident and brian's resignation.

the happenings in the leadup to the resignation i believe led to the drop in our players attitude. beforehand we were pretty much trouble free.

I understand where you're coming from, but what's going to change from '09 and '10, considering we'll have the same coach?

We've already cut some deadwood, and in Riddells instance, poor influence off the field.
I see no reason why we cannot hit our straps immediately with new attitude and discipline around the joint. We know we already have the talent.

Not sure why I get a mention so often in your posts Bigfella. ;-)

No, I have no accolades for the Eels office today. But if you think that this resignation is out of the blue as Fitzy has said, and that the spending more time with the family excuse (the old chestnut used by every departing politician) is in anyway legitimate 2 weeks before Daniel Anderson touches down at Kingsford Smith, then you are one very naive chappie !

I say it's strategic. What do you reckon - coincidence ?

Same coach - but Anderson will be inheriting Hages team in 09. At least in 2010 - Anderson will be able to recruit players he thinks will benefit the team - and cut those that don't. He has had zero input into the squad he has to work with.

Along with the fact he needs to re-learn what the NRL is about - I just can't see 09 being enough time for him. I pray that I am wrong. Wouldn't be the first time..

What is so wrong with the Squad?

Hayne Grothe Smith Inu Reddy Not a bad backline at all..

Hindmarsh Moi Moi Cayless Mateo Also a classy Pack...

Just needs to get them to get into the game for 80 mins(well not Fui Fui) and have the other players to play their roles he should be doing ok...

Wrong? wrong? wrong?...Well 5/8th & halfback come to mind. I can't see us winning a brass razoo as long as we are solely reliant on B Finch as our play maker.

Good news for the club , Hagan- nice guy , ordinary coach . Hopefully Anderson gets the nod ......I wouldn't expect him to work wonders next year ........but my prediction of a possible wooden spoon will be upgraded to fringe top 8 with Anderson at the helm .

Ditto.

Arrives at the beginning of November. Between now and the start of the season there is effectively four months.

I have heard a rumour, just a small one, that a prop playing in the World Cup has been approached to play for the Eels. He isn't a big name and is from one of the "minnows" but apparently has a reasonably decent upside.

If a new coach comes in now, there is still some time to sort out some acquisitions either overseas or within the NRL as clubs try to sort out their salary cap. This would probably involve some players being released so it depends on a few things but who knows.

I'm not saying it is a certainty but there is still a decent chance between now and the start of the season that there will be some changes in the playing roster.

Outside of a few gut feelings there weren't many who saw Hagan leaving either.

Look who we had on 01 running around as our halves Taylor.. Ask Parra Pete What he thinks of the Halfback we had in 05 and 07..

Finch just needs to do his job and the other players will take it from their.. Mateo Is a good ball player..

We could possibly have:

1 Burt
2 Hayne
3 Smith
4 Inu
5 Reddy/Grothe

It the forwards that will be the worry with Just Hindmarsh Mateo Mui Mui and Cayless making up the pack to far... There will have to be a few players step up from wenty and NYC...

They have the skill they just need the mental toughness...
