It's dispiriting that there aren't more thoughts on how to deal a blow to NZRU in the schools.

All the evidence from the past 40 years is that League can challenge Union at elite level for a time, but then normal service is resumed.
Nzrl simply hasn’t had anything like the funding it needs to take a serious shot at union at jnr and grassroots level. It only has $8mill revenue compared to $188mill nzru has. throw in no fta exposure and Until that changes nothing else will.

Realistically australia can only support two clubs now

and the two pacific sides aren’t viable

so it’s a comp with six viable teams

they should copy South Africa and join the top 14 despite the travel times

Bullshit Wally, The pacific sides are more than capable of being viable. Just because you wish it to be true doesn't make it so.

I think 3 reds act and nsw. For a comp that's struggling, the last thing they need is WA. If twiggy wasn't backing them, they'd be folded in between breakfast and lunch.

But thats the thing... He IS backing them.

There is no money for schools from the NZRL. they don't even have enough for themselves. NZR, through the provinces, directly funds school comps.

Funding and all blacks brand are huge factors.

NRL should bring back the old u20’s Toyota cup and help fund a u20’s NZ South Island team.

NRL should also fund a u18 NZ South Island team also.

This is how little funding nzrl is able to provide its provinces. $nz558k is all they have to give grassroots.
Meanwhile nzru provided $nz32million to its provinces!

anyone who thinks another nrl club in nz is somehow going to change anything at grassroots is kidding themselves whilst this funding chasm exists. .

Or even better they should fund nzrl to have an elite nz competition at u 16 and u18 level That feeds into the warriors and a South Island nsw cup side.

With league taking a lot of their players I doubt they can manage three teams

only way is if nzru allows kiwi players to play for oz super rugby sides that might work

That can't be said with any certainty. Streaming makes the whole picture opaque. Like-for-like comparisons are nigh impossible.

I'll leave it to whatsisname at sportsindustry to arbitrate.
Nrl beat afl by 23 million viewers last year (excluding nz ratings)

nrl home and away season (ignoring origins etc) outrated afl home and away season despite afl counting two more teams and more total games

Play to your strengths mate and the NRL in the form of a Toyota cup style competition is a huge strength and appeal for young NZ rugby talent.

They’ve moved sg ball to u19’s, and also discouraged clubs, renamed teams that aren’t nrl linked. It feels like there may be an u19 national grade in the making? that still leaves a big elite development path in nz outside of the warriors team for players that would rather not move to Oz at 16.

im expecting we may eventually end up with
nrl
reserve grade
u19

national comps. But that still leaves very ltd elite pathway opportunities for kids in nz Unless they move to Oz.

you could have an elite u16 and an elite u18 comp across nz with the best of those kids feeding the warriors, or other nrl clubs, u19’s.

Surely travelling to Australia as a 15,16,17 and 18 year old is a big selling point compared to only playing other NZ sides?

not really, it’s a pain! The excitement soon wears off after sitting around in airports for hours every other week.
And again the big issue is it limits an elite path to just one or at most two teams ie 25-50 players max, And It leaves big geographical gaps in nz for kids coming through. At moment lots of kids feel their only pathway is to move to australia, that’s not a great outcome if you would rather stay in nz.

elite u16 and u18 nz comp feeding warriors u19’s and other clubs u19’s and reserve grade sounds like ot would generate lots more depth.
