That’s why the only long term sustainability I could see would be to base them in nz and split games between png and nz. Not a great idea but it’s literally the only way I could see it surviving long term. Oceana Orcas anyone? The union version is failing pretty badly but never know with govt money backing a rl version might fair better?

spending $10mill a year developing digicell cup clubs into professional outfits with full academies and women’s set ups and adding another qrl cup side and u19’s in qrl comp would be a better outcome for pngrl for the next decade Imo.
Basing a PNG team in NZ is ridiculous, it’s what, a 5-6 hour flight? I don’t think there are even direct flights between NZ and PNG.
Plus players will constantly be going between tropical heat and chilly conditions in winter.

the idea of a team representing all of the “islands” is borderline insulting as well, it’s basically limping a bunch of completely diverse cultures into one basket, might well call it the poor brown guys team.

a cairns based team has its own issues but it makes a lot more sense.

Oh well just wait a few months and see if he’s lieing
are you in government?
250 million invested to grow rugby league sure sounds like something league fans would normally be positive about
im all for investing 250 million into PNG rugby league but I’m not sure spending it all on an NRL club is the way to go.

it’s a bad example but one that im using off the top of my head but imagine if a government be it Australian or PNG said they were going to invest in projects that would benefit PNG and it’s people and that project was the building of a golf course and shopping centre.

How many people from a poor 3rd world country with no money to buy golf clubs or the latest designer clothes and mobile phones etc benefit from a golf course and shopping centre?

No I just read the reports about what they plan to do

when you have 250 million spare you can invest it in a way you think is superior lmao

I actually think a PNG NRLW team is probably way more viable- would likely be competitive with local players and could act be based out of Port Moresby.

Why not fund a Pasifika comp similar to a Q cup standard and budget?
Take the government's 20 million pa:
4 Fiji teams
1 Tonga
1 Samoa
5 png
1 Cook Islands

Call it the "alliance cup"

Decent idea. Could possibly add a couple of NZ regional sides too though not Auckland/Warriors as they’d just dominate it. Possibly Darwin as well.

probably less Fiji/PNG teams too so as not to spread the talent too much.

Fiji x 2 (Suva, Nadi/Lautoka)
PNGx 3 (Port Moresby, Lae, Highlands)
Samoa
Tonga
Cook Islands
Wellington
Christchurch
Darwin

that’s 11- maybe see if the French are interested in adding a team from New Caledonia to make even numbers.
potentially Waikato/BoP in NZ too (or both).

The main issue is probably economic viability with the travel aspect.

Maybe leave out the PNG sides as it would weaken the digicel cup which is already a terrific competition.

could put teams from the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Vanuatu in their place instead.

Maybe China might agree to fund it?
Why not but it will probably break on the first day.

Funny thing:
China: 1.5 billion people, global economic powerhouse and military super power...
How do we counter that ??

I know! A Rugby league team in Papua new Guinea 😎

Has anyone even tried a sausage sizzle??

You can't make this shit up.
