Basing a PNG team in NZ is ridiculous, it’s what, a 5-6 hour flight? I don’t think there are even direct flights between NZ and PNG.That’s why the only long term sustainability I could see would be to base them in nz and split games between png and nz. Not a great idea but it’s literally the only way I could see it surviving long term. Oceana Orcas anyone? The union version is failing pretty badly but never know with govt money backing a rl version might fair better?
spending $10mill a year developing digicell cup clubs into professional outfits with full academies and women’s set ups and adding another qrl cup side and u19’s in qrl comp would be a better outcome for pngrl for the next decade Imo.
Plus players will constantly be going between tropical heat and chilly conditions in winter.
the idea of a team representing all of the “islands” is borderline insulting as well, it’s basically limping a bunch of completely diverse cultures into one basket, might well call it the poor brown guys team.
a cairns based team has its own issues but it makes a lot more sense.
