That’s why the only long term sustainability I could see would be to base them in nz and split games between png and nz. Not a great idea but it’s literally the only way I could see it surviving long term. Oceana Orcas anyone? The union version is failing pretty badly but never know with govt money backing a rl version might fair better?

spending $10mill a year developing digicell cup clubs into professional outfits with full academies and women’s set ups and adding another qrl cup side and u19’s in qrl comp would be a better outcome for pngrl for the next decade Imo.
16 clubs are in Australia, one in NZ, and theyll have to travel fifo for most home games, and you think basing them in NZ is a good idea... fmd where is the logistics on that, i said it was for immigration before, they wont need to take international fights every away game if they are based in cairns, but PR in his great selfish wisdom thinks basing them as nz2 will help them somehow, being further away from png where most home games would be played at..
Looking to kill 2 birds with one stone, thus leaving perf open for a licence

You don’t have to be a expansion expert mate to see how a NRL franchise from a poor 3rd country dependent on government handouts from another country and who the majority of the population don’t have a pot to p#ss in never mind a window to throw it out of will end up once the handouts stop.
And?
Wheresthe point? We tried maybe it fails, maybe it doesnt, and either way pathways get setup and they'll all thrive off it

You can setup the pathways for a fraction of what is being quoted to run a PNG NRL team.

also if it fails when the Australian government handouts end that means the NRL has wasted X amount of years on a franchise place which could have gone to Perth, NZ2, Brisbane3 or Adelaide etc.

Again what does any of this have to do with awarding a poor 3rd country that has a large percentage of the population living below the poverty line an NRL franchise that will be dependent on government handouts from a foreign government?
You wouldn’t be able to differentiate between a good or a bad idea when it comes to expansion.

Seriously mate you need to put emotion aside and look at the financial realities.

if you gave a homeless person a Ferrari would you consider that a good investment for the homeless person?

would he/she have the money to insure it? Would he/she have the money to fill it up with Petrol? Would he/she have enough money to pay for road tax? Would he/she have enough money to fix it if it breaks down?

emotion of giving PNG a NRL franchise because the people of PNG love RL and go nuts whenever Aussie teams go there over the financial realities of that country being a poor 3rd world nation.

in the wrong way.
Hey like I said it’s your opinion

which isn’t shared by Peter vlandys or the prime minister of Australia

it’s not like you can change anything

I don’t say it was a good idea, but it’s a better base for long term sustainability and corporate support than a small regional city already part of an nrl clubs catchment area. Port moresby, Wellington or cairns are all really bad ideas as is a pacifika club but Wellington probably has the best chance of being around in 25 years.

ps I don’t think nrl will go beyond 18 clubs for a very long time so any club getting a license before perth means the neglect will continue.

If money is growing then why can't they do a 1988/1995 and just place 3 clubs in the League as I would like to see Perth/NZ2 etc in my lifetime.

Decent idea. Could possibly add a couple of NZ regional sides too though not Auckland/Warriors as they’d just dominate it. Possibly Darwin as well.

probably less Fiji/PNG teams too so as not to spread the talent too much.

Fiji x 2 (Suva, Nadi/Lautoka)
PNGx 3 (Port Moresby, Lae, Highlands)
Samoa
Tonga
Cook Islands
Wellington
Christchurch
Darwin

that’s 11- maybe see if the French are interested in adding a team from New Caledonia to make even numbers.
potentially Waikato/BoP in NZ too (or both).

The main issue is probably economic viability with the travel aspect.

IMO the best way to go about it would be to help fund a 2nd tier ‘NZ Cup’ to be on a level with NSW & QLD Cup. Then add teams from wherever across Australia & the Pacific to whichever of the 3 comps that fits best on a case by case basis. Hopefully in time PNG’s Comp could move up to that level as well.

Hard to see Cook Islands getting a team in any scenario though, simply too small. Even Tonga & Samoa could be partnered and have pathways with a NZ team rather than a standalone team. New Caledonia was looking at a QCup bid around 2020, haven’t heard much lately.

Between the Pacific Nations, NZ, PNG, the “other” states and regional NSW there is plenty more expansion that could happen at a 2nd tier level to really solidify the “base of the pyramid” the NRL is built on so to speak.

I like the idea of staggering the expansion to 20 teams over a 5-7 years time period.

it gives the NRL more time to develop more NRL standard players especially from pacific nations like PNG, Fiji and Samoa etc. it also creates media headlines and publicity for the NRL in talking up new potential expansion areas like Perth, Christchurch, wellington or Adelaide etc.
