If money is growing then why can't they do a 1988/1995 and just place 3 clubs in the League as I would like to see Perth/NZ2 etc in my lifetime.
They could, and they might. But going on their history they probably wont. Best hope is the both the aus govt money for png is too good to pass up and what the wa govt is offering is also too good to say no to. If that’s the case it may force them to twenty clubs in next ten years,

problem for nz though is in that scenario they may well miss out to brisbane3. i feel nz2 best hope is if png don’t get in.

Comments section is what has been said on this thread as nauseam
Having declared his intention to go after Rugby League's best talent... I couldn't be happier to see Australia get hiding after hiding to exit the WC in the group stages.
They over paid by close to a million a season for Sualii, now those overs are practically guaranteed for future raids!
And I hope they do! It'll discourage all future prospects to go through the Rugby system , if there's even any money left for a decent system. For so called intellectuals... they sure played this horribly . They simply accelerated their own demise.

Nz2 will be team 20

all you cry babies complaining about png when Perth will be announced at the same time is hilarious

20 teams doesn’t include Adelaide or Brisbane 3 so obviously they will look to expand past 20 one day when junior pathways from png and the pacific islands kick in

I think the forum is broken, I keep clicking on the NZ expansion thread but it takes me to the PNG thread.
Haha you’re in the wrong place if you are expecting any level of moderation to keep on thread topic here! the expansion forum is like the black hole for moderators! I’ve been offering for years to take control. :)

I don’t say it was a good idea, but it’s a better base for long term sustainability and corporate support than a small regional city already part of an nrl clubs catchment area. Port moresby, Wellington or cairns are all really bad ideas as is a pacifika club but Wellington probably has the best chance of being around in 25 years.

ps I don’t think nrl will go beyond 18 clubs for a very long time so any club getting a license before perth means the neglect will continue.
If you’re putting a team in Wellington it should be a Wellington team, not a Wellington team with a manufacturered link to PNG, a place it had no geographical or cultural links to.

The ARU expanded to Perth and Melbourne after the 2003 World Cup with the goal of becoming a national sport and usurping rugby league.

How did that work out?

The Wallabies are a joke.

Super Rugby has gone from drawing strong crowds 20 years ago to playing in front of fewer than 10k people.

Yep, agree, any NZ team with PNG makes little sense. We have barely any historical and cultural links with them and barely any live in NZ. They're Aussie's colony ;) , so makes more sense for them to be based in Oz.

I actually want them to expand to Perth…. But it is funny that someone was here back then holding up the Western Force as an example to follow…

Every argument / debate has to always come back to how it helps Perth NRL team get over the line

I think the words the foolish blowhard mclennan used were " we have a shopping list of NRL players we`ll be in the market for". Good luck with that.
