New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Honestly, the google trend data for NZ was eye-opening for me. If the NRL is doing that well with just the Warriors, it's amazing to think the potential a second New Zealand team will bring in. That 6:00pm Oz/8:00pm NZ timeslot is almost tailor made so Kiwis can have a live game there most weeks featuring a NZ team.

Media companies are businesses. They'd be all over RL if it was pulling the numbers and profitable for them, but it's not particularly, and rarely has been outside of the M62 corridor when they've tried it.

Say what you will about the differences between soccer and RL, and I'm not denying those differences exist BTW, but media, political, and class biases towards RU would have impacted soccer to some degree as well, yet they successfully managed to negotiate it to become by far the most powerful sport in the UK despite that.
I'm not suggesting that RL has any hope of growing as big as soccer, or that it isn't easier said than done, but RL could grow significantly from it's base in England if it had strong leadership, dropped the infighting for cooperation, and implemented a solid long term business plan.

Who knows maybe IMG's influence will lead to those changes, but I highly doubt it unfortunately.
Football got out of that hole by sanitising itself. It still remains largely a male young following but moving to all seater stadiums after the disasters and getting rid of a lot of the hooliganism from the 70’s and 80’s opened it up to new followers. In England it’s always been by far the biggest sport in modern times. It’s national, has the media, and then came the money men. They did a great job reinventing to the epl and making it the biggest comp in a global sport.

Maybe IMG if given the chance will do something ona lessor scale for RL, we can but hope.

But it kinda isn't growth.
I'm down in the South ( Dunedin) and I've seen ( up the wahs) graffiti on a public toilet.
The Warriors have scooped up the Nation to a degree , there's plenty that will definitely jump on another team if it represents them more but at this point I sincerely doubt that there'd be a significant portion of Auckland who don't support the Warriors, just to wear a different Jersey there now would be brave. If there was another team, it would be a much much poorer cousin.
Wellington is a great option for another team but a Christchurch team branded Southern or South Island would have 1 million people suddenly completely on board and NRL supporters. It's a genuinely new area for the NRL, an entire land mass added.
Wellington once they sort out their stadium. I'm sure a Christchurch team would put pressure on that too.

Another Auckland team is a solid no from me.
Do you feel there is the corporate support in Christchurch for an nrl club? That’s where a big chunk of an nrls clubs revenue comes from These days.mSponsors and game day box sales.
The new stadium with its new boxes is a great vehicle but is there enough companies in Christchurch to back an nrl club do you think? I’m assuming Wellington would have a bigger company base?

A second NZ should go hand in hand with the next NZ broadcast deal and part of the deal should be a guaranteed Friday 8pm (NZ) game every week, and for that game to be broadcast free-to air in NZ.

the debate on brisbane3 is akin to a debate on if hull should have a third SL team like skirlaugh or west hull admitted. Not that there is two teams that have been there for 135 years lol. No one would suggest that’s a good idea.

Brisbane is well serviced with two clubs for now. If Ipswich ever have the finances and stadium and dolphins and titans are still going strong that will be the time to be considering brisbane3.
We are talking SEQ expansion though, not just Brisbane

Every week might be a little too much.
I imagine the Warriors and any NZ2 team would want at least some Saturday and Sunday games. If we ever get to 3 NZ teams that would be doable though.

The Friday 6pm slot should 2/3 NZ games, otherwise a regional game that will sell out regardless (Wagga, Tamworth, Mackay etc).

Not at all. However, I'm realistic about the actual state of league in NZ outside of the Warriors 2023 bandwagon.
Great so neither of us make our comments based on just this season, both of us agree that the game can grow in NZ and add the fact the NRL are finally investing in NZ and we have the opportunity to take the game to the next level

The game can grow in NZ because it has been in an all time low (league had the fastest decline in player numbers of all sports in Auckland as of 2022), as discussed much earlier in this thread and just generally ignored. However, a second team in Auckland just does not seem a realistic option. Here's some questions for you:
Where will the team be based?
Where will they get their supporters from and what will differentiate them from Warriors fans?

They stil can if Australian sides also host games in that timeslot (which they already do) and the NRL schedules those matches to be against NZ sides. All that needs to be done is ensure one NZ team is always playing in that timeslot, whether it’s a home or away game.

Bringing back sa into super rugby would make more sense
I agree but it’s never going to happen now. These tours are a good idea but would add to an already congested international window.

could be at the expense of the autumn tours to Europe?

Firstly, I would dred the day we based sides location based on corporate interests! Or government for that matter!
The way our game is funded now doesn't rely on these factors thank god!
Secondly, Christchurch or Wellington is irrelevant as corporate sponsorship will be national if not international!

Ah yeh I thought you meant games played in NZ, that’s doable.

“One New Zealand” is the sponsor and have national reach as they’re just a rebranded Vodafone. The other major Warriors sponsors are Autex (effectivey the club’s owner) Puma, and Sky Sport- all of which are nationally relevant. So theoretically a club from any part of the country could have similar corporate support.
A Wellington side likely wouldn’t have much trouble attracting local corporate sponsorship as being the nation’s capital Wellington has a larger corporate sector than most cities of its side.
Christchurch is more limited in that respect but a side based there would still be a attractive to any industries that are focussed on the region.
