Firstly, I would dred the day we based sides location based on corporate interests! Or government for that matter!
The way our game is funded now doesn't rely on these factors thank god!
Secondly, Christchurch or Wellington is irrelevant as corporate sponsorship will be national if not international!

Spark (essentially the Telstra of NZ) would be a good option for a 2nd NZ team.

Ah yeh I thought you meant games played in NZ, that’s doable.
I reckon you’d aim for both the NZ sides to play half their home games on Friday nights, with the others split between the early Saturday and Sunday timeslots. You wouldn’t play any NZ home games on Thursdays because of the time zone factor.

The game can grow in NZ because it has been in an all time low (league had the fastest decline in player numbers of all sports in Auckland as of 2022), as discussed much earlier in this thread and just generally ignored. However, a second team in Auckland just does not seem a realistic option. Here's some questions for you:
Where will the team be based?
Where will they get their supporters from and what will differentiate them from Warriors fans?
Mt Smart, Auckland, they are not the Warriors.

The last question is not a good one though. If that was a genuine concern we'd have no two teams sharing a city in any code.

Also, bear in mind that I said none of this has to happen tomorrow.

They stil can if Australian sides also host games in that timeslot (which they already do) and the NRL schedules those matches to be against NZ sides. All that needs to be done is ensure one NZ team is always playing in that timeslot, whether it’s a home or away game.
That's pretty much it. Also if Sydney teams are taking their home games to NZ then they could also play in that slot.

You could end up with 7-8 Warriors, 7-8 NZ2, 1-2 other games - so 14-18 out of 27 rounds with a NZ Friday night game. The other 9-13 games would be like you said - games played in Australia against NZ teams. That will have a big imrovement too on overall crowd averages.

I'd also be aiming for a second target slot for the other NZ games (even if they're away teams) - say 6pm East Coast for 8pm NZ.

It actually does. a club needs to be able to generate money from sponsorship and corporate game day sales to remain sustainable and ideally profitable.

main kit sponsors yes, I’m talking about the 20-30 local companies that sit under the big 5 or 6 sponsors. The ones that are paying $10-30k for a box at the stadium.

It is a good question and has nothing to do with a general premise over whether two teams can share a city. We're discussing Auckland specifically. Where do you think this fanbase is coming from? (Even if it's not tomorrow).

ALL clubs are now profitable from the grant alone.
ALL clubs.
But as has already been pointed out, there corporate sponsorship being national and international would be a bonanza for a new NZ club.

I know where you're trying to go with it 🙄 your mind only works in one direction.

If you’ve got 18+ teams that means 9 games a weekend, ie an additional Sunday game, kicking off pretty early. That’s tailor made for NZ, as it translates into a 2/3pm local kick-off time. The Saturday 5:30 EST slot works well too.

That’s nonsense. The grant is $17million. Players salary is $12mill. Football Dept $5mill. That’s the grant gone. Clubs then spend $13-35mill extra on a host of other things.

I’d have Auckland 2 behind Christchurch/South Island and Wellington, maybe Hamilton/Waikato as well. Warriors have a lot of growth left in them before a second Auckland side would be worth a look.

In an ideal world if there was to be an Auckland 2 you’d have a North Auckland based side, maybe playing out of North Harbour. I don’t think RL is all that popular on the north side though from what I’ve seen on here.

this.

add in the north island v South Island dynamics and you’ve got a classic sporting rivalry on the cards.

on the warriors they could easily go to that next level similar to the broncos with a good prolonged run of form and stadium redevelopment and increased capacity of around 35k.

north harbour stadium is a great stadium but apparently the north Auckland/north shore is only around 200k.

The NRL Nines drew great attendances in Auckland during its early years. Same cannot be said about the 2020 event held in Perth.

eh? The last Auckland nines drew 22k!
25k for a Pre season knock about In afl territory aint bad!
If they a wanted more they shouldnt have played day one on a Friday at 4pm on valentines night! From memory Sydney only managed 30k for a world nines. Rl heartland and all that.

From memory the 9’s tournament in Perth was sh#thouse because of big name withdrawals.

In the other thread you said Perth has a "sizeable hardcore RL fanbase". Now you're telling me Perth is "afl territory" (sic).

Valentine's Day caused these "hard-core" fans to not show up on Friday?

The first day drew 10k. The second day, which included finals, drew 14k. Not much difference.

If you had to pick one nation to bring over to rugby league out of all of them I would pick nz

it’s the jewel in unions crown

it would make the rlwc very good at the same time as dealing a massive blow to the ruwc

same goes for Tonga samoa fiji and the Cook Islands

rugby league owing the pacific brings huge benefits to the rlwc and international rl
NZ, Tonga and Samoa are already highly competitive at RL.

Particularly in comparison to Union, NZ has regularly beaten NZ in meaningful matches in RL in the last 20 years.

can’t bring myself to answer that first point as it’s so dumb, even for you!

Did me! Happy wife happy life.

Auckland 22k, perth 25k. Hmmmmm.
if it had been sat and sun it would likely have topped 30k

but this is a Nz thread.
