New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

What’s odd about that? It’s the current size of Eden Park which sells out for big RU and cricket games. Pretty much every proposal for a new main Auckland stadium is around the 50k mark
Think they missed their shot for the new stadium in 2011 when they opted for the patch up of Eden park option. Now it’s just a political minefield money pit sadly stuck with a ground trying to please 2 major sports but instead is barely suitable for both.

Bit of a counter punch from Union in NZ the last week with the ABs bandwagon filling up and the Kiwis game struggling to sell tickets

At it's core the last CQ bid was one man's vanity project. The bid died when his business went under and he couldn't afford it anymore.

A CQ NRL side makes no commercial sense whatsoever, so it'd probably have a 50/50 shot of getting up if it still existed these days lol. . . We should bring the Brothers confraternity literal gypsy club bid back as well if we're taking CQ seriously again.
100% agreed. It was a stupidly naive idea. Much like Cairns having an NRL team is

I wasn't raising it as a serious bid, but saying it's just as absurd as claiming Christchurch can support an NRL(yet)

Essentially yes, JM Kelly Group going broke took away the driving force behind the original bid. I am still surprised a new bid hasn’t popped up to be honest, especially with V’landys in charge.

I am from CQ and still lived there during the bid’s run, it was the talk of the town for years. I definitely wouldn’t rule out another bid starting, be it from another “cashed up” individual/group, the Capras or a combination of both behind it.

Do I think a CQ NRL team would work? It probably would survive, existing on a 10-15k crowd average and being bottom half of the table more often than not. It isn’t a priority for expansion though. The original bid’s sound bite was to fill the gap between NQ and SEQ with a team but that “gap” doesn’t have enough people in it unfortunately.

Rocky just isn't an appealing place to be honest... It's just a large country town that's not even on the coast. It would struggle to attract players. They could base themselves in Gladstone I guess but then you're in a town with sub 50k people, just not worth it.

The coast is easy driving distance but I agree with the rest, Gladstone isn’t any more desirable. If Rocky was double the size then it may have been a chance.

Surely if there was ever going to be another regional qlnd team it will be Sunshine Coast? not there will be.
stadium aside a small city like Christchurch may well struggle to sustain an nrl club when rl is a distant second to union in the region.

The Sunshine Coast has an annual growth rate over 2%. They'll hit 500,000 sometime in the late 2030s/early 2040s. And that's about how big the Gold Coast was when the Titans came in.
You aren't going to have both the Dolphins and a SC team in the NRL and for now the Dolphins are trying to establish it as part of their turf

Christchurch/Canterbury/the South Island could absolutely support an NRL side with the right backing and good leadership.

It wouldn't be the biggest or most successful NRL side, but it wouldn't be amongst the worst either, and that sort of top down slow build is the only way the NRL is going to expand in NZ.

Simply surviving isn't a high enough standard to be considered a success anymore.

A CQ NRL side would be amongst the smallest both commercially and in fanbase and would be perpetual strugglers. They're also in a market where the NRL/RL already holds a dominant share.

There's no rational way you can justify giving CQ an NRL license over new sides in unrepresented major metros and other strategic markets. Then again, there's no way you can justify PNG and more suburban clubs either, yet that's the way things have gone.

The ABs are in another Rugby World Cup final, there goes talk of NZ2 for another decade
Kiwi's are werid and will support the Warriors this year yet can't get the backside out to watch Super or NPC Rugby.
Unlike NRL or French Rugby Union New Zealand have 11-12 Stadiums thats stand empty most of the year.
Wanting the Boks to win now.

SEQLD should have been Broncos, Brisbane 2 (easts/firehawks i guess) Titans and then Sunshine Coast down the track IMO. Dolphins have since claimed the Sunshine Coast as their territory though which is bullshit. With the Olympics coming the Sunshine Coast stadium is far more likely to get a major upgrade than Kayo stadium.
