New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Gus Gould said on that 6 tackle podcast recently , that there should be another Auckland team within ten years … thought that was interesting…

I would have thought NZ 2 should be elsewhere … but is Auckland becoming “Brisbane like” that games should be played there every week?

I wouldn’t say the crowds are quite there now , although that’s difficult to tell in a 25k stadium that is becoming regularly sold out … but the pathways in that North NZ region could do with another team …
Yep I've been saying that on this very thread. Gus was involved with pathways in NZ for a short while and his thoughts would have been based on what he saw

In reality Auckland is the only city big enough to support another team. Everyone knows this.

But it will f**k the Warriors, and Everyone knows this.

NZ2 is about 20 years to premature. EVERYONE knows this.

Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch are all big enough… the problem is lack of existing rugby league infrastructure and support in all of them. If they were already RL cities they’d be at least as viable as Townsville and Newcastle.
Auckland has the problem that there’s no pressing reason for supporters to jump ship to a rival club, while there are old established RL clubs there they already basically feed into the Warriors.

That's precisely my point though, they aren't RL areas, and so aren't big enough to sustain an NRL team in 2025 or for a decade or more yet.

They aren't even remotely in the realm of Newy and Townsville, as RL isn't the No1 sport in that city and region.

At this point Dubbo, Bathurst, Rockhampton and the Sunny Coast are far more viable because RL then them.

Taking out the covid years the warriors crowd avg over the last few years has been 15.8k. Nuts to consider cannibalising their small active fanbase with a second team in Auckland

lol SC maybe but Dubbo/Bathurst is an exaggeration, league mad for sure Wellington and Christchurch would have more potential purely through the number of potential union converts

Rocky has 80k people lol

CQ is probably 250kish at a rough estimate when you include Gracemere, Gladstone, Cap Coast, Central Highlands etc. Still not big enough though. Obviously more if you push that to include up to Mackay and down to Bundaberg but that is stretching it, Mackay may be closer to Rockhampton than Townsville but it’s pretty strong Cowboys country.

I’m a bit surprised a CQ bid hasn’t popped its head up again though given the current talk of expanding to 20 and the current NRL leadership.

At it's core the last CQ bid was one man's vanity project. The bid died when his business went under and he couldn't afford it anymore.

A CQ NRL side makes no commercial sense whatsoever, so it'd probably have a 50/50 shot of getting up if it still existed these days lol. . . We should bring the Brothers confraternity literal gypsy club bid back as well if we're taking CQ seriously again.
