The "expansionists" overstate the importance of Adelaide and Perth. They say we need to add teams in these cities to boost the value of the broadcast rights. Their argument makes no sense because the TV markets in Adelaide and Perth have little to offer.
AwFuL is the biggest game in Adelaide and Perth, yet metropolitan FTA TV ratings from both cities are ordinary. This is despite every game involving the Crows, Power, Eagles and Dockers game being broadcast live into their home cities.
An AwFuL game featuring the Dockers or Eagles will be watched by by just 70k to 95k people in Perth. To put this in perspective, an NRL game that doesn't feature a Queensland team will generate 98k viewers in Brisbane.
An NRL game featuring the Broncos will be watched by 170k in Brisbane. This is an alarming disparity because roughly half of the Broncos games are not broadcast on FTA. It's fair to assume RL fans in Brisbane are more likely than Eagles and Dockers fans in Perth to have Foxtel.
The Lions are watches by 48k people in Brisbane. The overall average for all games broadcast into Brisbane is 30k. Games broadcast into Perth that do not feature a local team only get 45k viewers.
The Storm average 33k in Melbourne. Games that do not involve the Storm average just 8k. The Lions are pulling almost as many viewers as the Storm, despite the latter being more successful on the pitch. Overall, Melbourne averaged just 11k. The ratings for Perth are just as bleak. Only 8k people from Perth tune in.
No wonder AwFuL is so keen on getting a foothold in the Brisbane market!
