I remember that. He also said Brisbane 2 needed to be based in the inner suburbs. He predicted terrible crowds and mocked its recruitment. Despite not landing a marquee player and playing a few matches at Dolphin Oval and Sunshine Coast Stadium, the Dolphins drew almost twice as many fans to their home games than the Western Reds in 1995.
I predicted they'd finish 12th-13th. I was correct
Anyway NZ2 anyone?

Again, it's not Brisbane 3, it's SEQ 4 and the demand has come for another SEQ team because of the Dolphins" success, not because they err... created an Ipswich sized hole in the NRL
just because the Dolphins have been successful (first year) doesn't mean there is demand for more teams straight away lol

which are both true lol. Brisbane2 is consolidation of an already strong RL market, as would be the not needed Brisbane3. Its not expansion into a new market.
I think that this lack of expansion into new markets is kinda understated in what league has done.

RL started in a pub in Western city in actuality. Expanded to Wollongong, Newcastle then Canberra , Brisbane...Townsville, Auckland and Melbourne.
RL is expanding!
Thing is that it's not forced expansion... a town or city gets the bug and grows a heavy interest- we give them a team! Absolutely the best way to grow! Organically and risk free!
The only exception is Melbourne which is purely the second biggest city in this corner of the planet and simply has to have a presence. ( the same can't be said for Perth)

Now the game continues to grow and expand! It is expanding across NZ with them catching the bug and a heavy intrest! We should do what has been a proven success! And give them a team!

The AFL expand into areas that aren't getting an AFL bug or heavy interest because they don't have any!

I think Perth is a good option but I don't see a ground swell of support that has a proven track record.

I'm writing this from Dunedin where I've seen " up the wahs" in graffiti on toilets and jerseys in the streets.
There's a growing heavy demand here and now!
Not something that will be forced down the throats of it's inhabitants but but a willing, waiting and excited population ready to embrace their own team!

Brisbane getting a second team has taken 30 years. Too long sure but 20 years isn't. 20 years should be what we're looking at and it should come out west Brisbane Ipswich way . Broncos represents all the city down to Logan, Dolphins are the city up to Nambour and Sunshine Coast, south of Logan is Titans territory. Ipswich is growing fast and in 20 years will capture support around the city out to Toowoomba ( west Brisbane Jets would be the Brand)

I think it's just good business for Easts Tigers to stay in the papers and be affiliated with talk of NRL for any prospective members, investors, sponsors and players. That's all this is.

The "expansionists" overstate the importance of Adelaide and Perth. They say we need to add teams in these cities to boost the value of the broadcast rights. Their argument makes no sense because the TV markets in Adelaide and Perth have little to offer.

AwFuL is the biggest game in Adelaide and Perth, yet metropolitan FTA TV ratings from both cities are ordinary. This is despite every game involving the Crows, Power, Eagles and Dockers game being broadcast live into their home cities.

An AwFuL game featuring the Dockers or Eagles will be watched by by just 70k to 95k people in Perth. To put this in perspective, an NRL game that doesn't feature a Queensland team will generate 98k viewers in Brisbane.

An NRL game featuring the Broncos will be watched by 170k in Brisbane. This is an alarming disparity because roughly half of the Broncos games are not broadcast on FTA. It's fair to assume RL fans in Brisbane are more likely than Eagles and Dockers fans in Perth to have Foxtel.

The Lions are watched by 48k people in Brisbane. The overall average for all games broadcast into Brisbane is 30k. Games broadcast into Perth that do not feature a local team only get 45k viewers.

The Storm average 33k in Melbourne. Games that do not involve the Storm average just 8k. The Lions (in Brisbane) average 15k more than the Storm (in Melbourne), despite the latter being more successful on the pitch. Overall, Melbourne averaged just 11k. The ratings for Perth are just as bleak. Only 8k people from Perth tune in.

No wonder AwFuL is so keen on getting a foothold in the Brisbane market!

Nice point and food for thought ….

I agree that people get a bit carried away with the “dots on a map”…

I think Brisbane 3 will happen within 10 years …Maybe Team 19… They are the “safe “ expansion team option that you know will be pretty self sufficient from Day 1….and good for the SEQ TV market…so good to introduce a “fixed cost” when you cant offset the new team $$ with another game to sell ( similar to what they have done with the Dolphins…)

Where to base it though … would need to be in the west of Brisbane right?

Moving back to NZ2…. This won’t drive the TV markets … but their worth to the game is development … more options for NZ juniors to stay in their own country is required ….

Isn't this just extreme cherry picking?

Like why only FTA data? What about STV(Fox) and Kayo? Dont Fox pay by far the lions share of the TV money?

And just using 2023 , as in didnt the Broncos have their best season in like forever, and the Eagles had one of the worst seasons in Australian sports history (didn't they lose by 250 points in game or something?) Wouldnt the last 4 or 5 years be a better indication?

Unless we are to believe that Fox paid a bomb the rights to AFL just for shits and giggles.

Nz2 pros
jnr development
Rivalry for warriors
possibly sky nz tv value
international player availability
stadium if based in Christchurch

nz2 cons
no bid
no value to Australian tv
no new tv time slot value
No obvious location
up until this year warriors have mostly been pants on and off the field

If the PNG deal falls over then I'd go New Zealand 2, Brisbane 3 and New Zealand 3.

Super Rugby ain't the drawcard it used to be. Adding a second and third team in New Zealand could pave the way for better broadcast deals out of New Zealand. It will offer more benefits than teams from Adelaide and Perth.

NZ2 is perfect for the Fri 6pm AEST game. Add a third team in NZ and no Australian team ever has to host a game in this slot.
