Getting this thread back on track, the Warriors have today announced a deal to take 1 home game per season to Christchurch for 3 years (2024-26 inclusive).

The first two years will have the game played at the current stadium, but 2026 should see the game played at the new Te Kaha stadium, currently under construction.

They're also playing the Tigers in a trial.

Could this be to fend off nz2

warriors haven’t played their own home games away from Auckland for ages

the crowds would be a reflection of how well supported nz2 will be
Interesting to see the Warriors shift focus from Wellington to Christchurch.

In the past a lot of Warriors games (some home games, but a fair number of away games, like that span of Bulldogs games that were technically "away") were in Wellington. Maybe they see Christchurch as more likely to get NZ2 now, and are trying to pre-empt that?

To be fair, most sports teams in a competition will try to protect their territory against getting an expansion team added there (or other teams impinging on their turf). We've seen that in the past.

It's up to the NRL to work through any concerns, and make decisions that serve the interests of the game as a whole rather than any club's own percieved self-interest. Err.. well, SUPPOSED to be, anyway... ;)

Fair points, and seeing how the outside chance of NZ 2 has got the Warriors committing to a "home away from home" just goes to show how competition in our market over here could make them do more outside their home city.
Even though it’s In the same city it’s similarcompetition

dolphins got 30k members in year one whilst broncos rose to 40k

Even the titans and cowboys got caught up in the hype

nz2 will grow the warriors and themselves

The ball is in Christchurch's court to press their case for a team. Selling out these games will surely place Christchurch in the running for one of the next two licences.

Oh dear, the bloke trying to put together a Christchurch bid today put a post on Facebook asking if anyone was interested in Investing in it lol, a step up from block funding idea I suppose.

“We are spearheading an effort to bring professional rugby league teams from New Zealand into the Australian Men's and Women's leagues, similar to how the Toronto Raptors play in the NBA.

Our goal is to launch a brand new team from New Zealand's South Island, which will complement the Mens team established in Auckland, North Island since 1995. In addition, currently, there are 16 men's teams from Australia in the competition and 10 women's teams in the women's competition.

We would greatly value a chance to talk to potential investors. We have strong backing from the local council, and the stadium (brand new and under construction), and expect noteworthy revenue in our inaugural year.
Message me if you are interested in this opportunity”

Dolphins have produced a litany of quality players who've enriched the NSWRL and NRL.

Australia's first indigenous Australian to captain a national sporting team was a proud Redcliffe junior.

What's dumb is you not knowing how much it costs to run an NRL team. It's in the Gemba Report, FFS. A team like Perth will need to generate about 20-25m per annum from football operations to keep up with the strongest clubs. Good luck generating that sort of revenue while playing out of a 20k seat stadium that has poor corporate facilities while stationed in a city where rugby league as a niche sport.

20-25m is what they'll need to generate from football operations to keep up with the Cowboys. They'll need strong investment from the WA Gov to build the infrastructure needed to keep up with the big clubs. A high performance training centre. A new stadium. Without either they will struggle -- just like the other two teams that play out of Perth Rectangular Stadium.

Players don't want a draft. See Mark Carrol and the Brisbane Broncos.

You are so full of shit and a total bore.

Force are owned by Twiggy Forrest.

In your f**ked up head the Dolphins "failed on all metrics", despite having the second most lucrative sponsorship portfolio, second best in the NRL for attendances, 30k members and being the 5th most watched team on TV.

Now you're telling me a Perth-based team will be one of the richest in the NRL?

Delusional.

It's just a dumb and biased opinion that's based on your absurd obsession with expanding the game (to the detriment of the heartland). You hate Brisbane and Sydney for some reason I'll never understand. No matter how big and rich the Brisbane clubs are you'll say they're a failure.

The ARLC is set up in a way that prevents expansion clubs being dependent on handouts. All 17 NRL clubs, QRL and NSWRL have voting rights.

Do you think they'll vote for a Perth-based team that isn't self-sufficient?

The Dolphins had to provide a $50m bank guarantee. That's how much pressure there is on expansion clubs to be viable from day one.

Your problem is you're a hateful prick and jealous of the heartland. Go read the doom and gloom you heaped on the Dolphins in the lead up to their inclusion. You're still saying they failed on all metrics, despite being bigger and more profitable after one season than the Storm after 25 seasons.

It's delusional to think a Perth-based team will be any bigger than a small Sydney club. Shit stadium. No assets. Niche sport in mid-sized city. No value to broadcasters.
There's no way I'm wasting my time going through all the BS in there LOL. It's just the same tired old crap that's been repeated by the insular and entitled for as long as I can remember anyway.

All of it was said about the Swans, Storm, Lions, Warriors, Raiders, etc, etc, hell I'm old enough to remember when f**king Penrith was too far outside of Sydney and would inevitably fail lol, yet all of them turned out pretty alright given time. RL would be an irrelevant regional oddity like RL in England, or the BRL lol, if it wasn't for them. They've all outlived many of the precious, irreplicable, heartland clubs that are all so popular and untouchable as well lol.

The Raiders and Storm went from being hopeless wastes of money that'd bankrupt the league to the cartel going out of their way to attempt to kill them off because of their success within a decade FFS.

Guess what, motherf**ker?

A BRL club is bigger after their first season in the NRL than your club has ever been in its 40 year history.

Everything you said about the Dolphins turned out to be bullshit.

Storm wouldn't be where they are today without News Ltd and the ARLC.

Pretty interesting having the Warriors commit to playing at Christchurch.
Good on the Warriors but there's a few ways to interpret this.
The Warriors went mainstream right across NZ this year and it's only sensible that they show their supporters outside of Auckland some love ( sorry Wellington) or are they trying to grow their support in the South Island? Pretty sure it's both but is it a mad scramble to gather as many fans as possible before a new team enters? And will playing in front of full stands in Christchurch make a new team from there a certainty?

Without a new club- the Warriors will become a behemoth! Bigger than the Broncos , far bigger than any club, the biggest Rugby club across both codes on the planet!
Exciting times for the game here in NZ !
