New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

I think it could potentially hurt the NPC further..lots of young talent there!
Eventually that'll effect the Super Rugby and aultimatly the All blacks.
17 clubs
1 million each salary cap free for Union talent..

17 million dollar raid of Union talent by the best scouts in the Pacific...

This is going to hurt.
Time will tell but the Warriors have landed 4 All Blacks in their existence (I guess 5 if you count RTS)
All with the exception of John Kirwan who was well and truely in the twilight of his career were fringe all Blacks. Marc Ellis was a partial success lasting 2 years but better known for his tv work than his playing career, Mark Robinson played 1 game, Mark Carter 8.
More players would have already come if it really was an attractive option for NZ players.
Can see a couple potential recruits if NZ 2 happened but outside of that more of the same lack of interest

After the next tv deal the nrl salary cap is going to between 15 and 20 million

top players will be on 3 million plus

a team 20 nrl will be hungry for talent and cashed up to get it

How is it a poor result for the Warriors?
Being forced to play one of the top teams away every year.
Not being able to celebrate a day of national significance at home
Having to play a late away game with usually short turn around
Being at the mercy of the storms wants.
This game was heavily stacked for the Storm and was self serving for Melbourne only. I’m stoked we stood up and said no more
So I assume next years game will be at the Goldie then?

Probably time for the Roosters/Dragons to be moved on from ANZAC day also

Gold Coast wasn't a place during ww1 and ww2 - there was nobody there!
So having them play on a historically significant day is definitely the wrong pick.
Having said that, there's a good chance the Titans are on the up
and it's about creating an " event " status. If they get it right for the first one, grow a rivalry .. who knows..
That's not strictly true, my great grandmother was living there (Mermaid Beach) during WW2. ;)

It will be interesting to see if they can build something with the Titans. The Storm v Warriors was always an event due to the trophy they play for (for the Storm guy who passed away in NZ) and added to that there's always a bunch of NZers.

I'd rather we have kept this and then did another one where a team came to NZ to play, could be for Matariki.

Haha nobody's denying it exists but it wasn’t a city or anything it represents today. But semantics. .
Anyway, I think it could become big on the grounds that both clubs are on the up! I'm tipping the Warriors to perform as good or marginally better next year and the Titans appointment of Hastler to have them realise their potential.
I think both sides will be strong and around the top 4 - that’s a good start!
Hopefully we see this taken to Eden park, cheap family tickets on sale early with plenty of marketing.
If the first one is done right- you have an even that will grow.

Players from NPC and similar competitions in the Union world would probably be the better value investment than chasing All-Blacks or Springboks, that and 7ms players. Wouldn’t surprise me to see a few clubs go after some of those players if the $1m is correct.
Lure Fijian RU players over to the game. A Fijian scrum-half of flyhalf would be a handy player for the Fiji Bati.

this will bring the nation together behind their rugby league team

says a lot about past warriors ceo they didn’t demand a home game

the anthems are going to be lit

I’d be fine with that- ANZAC is a partnership after all is it not? We’d be hypocrites if we made GC play away every year (if it was them we played each year),it’s their day too- something Melbourne seems to forget with us.
Some seem to forget the NZ part of aNZac
No one saying stop playing the Roosters/Dragons game are they? At least that’s a relative home game to both teams.

Nobody is, but by the same logic, why not change the clubs?

Because neither the Dragons nor Roosters are being denied celebrating a national day in their own country like the Warriors were by the storms refusal to share? Not even close to the same logic- it’s the Storms refusal to compromise that lost them this game.
Maybe it should be shared around, Tigers/Eels never year, Dogs/Souths the year after, etc etc

Those teams shouldn't be denied the opportunity to play on there national day either.

On the potential cap dispensation. Don’t follow union, is there any decent talent other than wingers worth signing?
Wouldnt the top union backs be on mill plus anyway? Is an nrl club going to risk say $500k of salary cap plus $1mill out of their own pocket to take a punt on a top union back?
How’s the rugby league players going to feel about that?

Sounds good in theory but don’t see it signing the top talent. I guess paying $500k where none of it is on cap to test a younger union player or a player from a lessor nation, or 7’s, might happen?

Most of the backs could make the switch easy enough except maybe 9s, 9s generally a bit small for the defensive work of a league hooker but arguably have better distribution off the ruck.
Tight forwards are pretty specialised for the set piece but most loose forwards would probably convert ok as a 2nd rower or 13.
Majority of the NZ super rugby squads would be a similar athlete level as NRL players.
Not sure the NRL has the monetary incentive at this time, most players once they’re even an All Blacks squad member can get a bigger contract in Japan and France in particular. weighing it up from a player pov they’d more likely take the safer option in French/Japanese deals playing at a lower level than risking reputation trying league that isn’t guaranteed a successful transition.
Playing for the All Blacks is still a sizeable incentive for athletes in NZ- even the “worst ever” All Blacks made the RWC final.
League in NZ outside of the Warriors is in a much worse state than Union in Aus, NRL would have much more luck targeting Wallabies

Lots of talent in NZ union but the NRL would be better served in targeting union schoolboy competitions in a big way.

fiji union schoolboys as well.

You should know by now that the Storm are a parasitic organisation.

Haven't you been pushing for RL clubs to recruit from RU for years?

Why did Marc Ellis only stay in Rugby League for 2 seasons ?
