I’d never say “never” without a crystal ball. I remember in the early 90s League people were talking about taking over Union. By the early 2000s Union was booming and League was still struggling with the fallout from the SL war and my north shore Toff boss was talking about how he wished League wild hurry up and die. Neither happened. Currently League is booming and union is struggling, but things can turn around especially if unforeseen things happen.

Unless there is another super league war union is dead in its current format

super rugby was going ganbusters with 12 teams

but having a stand-alone comp in Australia is a fantasy unless it’s semi pro played before crowds of a few hundred

nrl is just getting back to where it was in 95 where it was basically untouchable

Why, it's what we have got, it's what the poms have got, the F4rench too, how about Wales and so on. Every Rugby comp has started with local clubs, the Union lot already have this in Australia so it's not like they are starting from scratch.
