NRL 2017 TV RATINGS!

NRL clear winner based on the fact there is no promotion whatsoever in Sydney. The upside over the next 10-15 years is massive for the NRL whereas, for AFL - really where else can they expand their TV audience out of? They've reached saturation. AFL is an Australian game - that's it.

Slight issue though. If Melbourne or a Queensland team did not make it would the ratings be as big? Remembering the Sydney aust rules clubs didnt make the gf for a change. If a genuinely popular Sydney club makes it like South Sydney, Parramatta or Saints then I can see a decent tv ratings reach . Otherwise not so good.

I think you'll find the ratings in QLD & NSW hold irrespective. VIC is the only market that really changes at present. I would say that as the Storm continue their dominance getting 1-7 people in Melbourne won't be that hard to hold. Perth with 2 AFL teams have 200k more (this is a target market for us - where we will grow).

AFL Adelaide's ratings are horrendous?
SatTV #AFLGF Seven 3.524m: Met 2.680m (Syd 376k Mel 1.277m Bri 349k Ade 372k Per 307k) Reg 844k (Q 135k NSW 126/123k V 257k Tas 134k WA 69k)

Add NZ ratings in alone and we hit 3.5m.
Add PNG
Add England
Add ......

AFL's got to be worried with that result.

Interest in SYDNEY for the AFL is as high as it ever could be outside of a SYDNEY team making the GF.
GWS & SYDNEY were Semi finalists. The AFL has been pumping tens of millions into sydney & they've got say 500k audience - fairly poor result?

Overall - suprised how bad their result is, and how close the NRL got considering that these are 'unpopular teams'- can you just imagine what a Brisbane vs. Parra result would have been? Sydney would be 1.3m alone.

376k audience in Sydney & 349k Brisbane for AFL gf without a Sydney or Qld club involved! ?They're big figures! If the NRL arent concerned with figures like that then this code is absolutely sitting on its hands. Quoting external areas like othet countries though valid is not like for as far as a genuine domestic compariso. However I do like your outside/international tv audience as a carrot for sponsors into the future.

I don't think they're big audiences for the simple reason that we're sitting on our hands as a code - we're not exactly pumping melbourne or nz with funds or given them salary cap concessions for "Living Away from home". The AFL take Melbourne, Adelaide, Tas & Perth for sake. We've got a lot of upside, they don't. The result is a typical AFL GF result. Millions in Victoria/Adelaide, no-one else really cares.

350k result in Sydney is poor for the AFL. 1 in 15 people?
350k result in Brisbane is poor also.

The AFL is a machine. The NRL is a bike. There is no comparison to the current position, however, the NRL has massive gains to be made. That's my point.

Each year this doesn't seem to help TV ratings for the Swans, Lins, Suns & GWS in their respective cities. In fact, TV ratings for all these sides over the past decade (excluding GWS & Suns who no doubt will follow the same path) have declined. Go figure, makes a mockery of the ratings system which no doubt favors the AFL

Go check the ratings for when the swans were in the gf & no storm in the NRL GF

You'll see something that should make you question the afl propaganda . But I doubt it

Agree. Its whether the bike is going become a car ? Thats the issue.

I would suggest the ratings are improving for that code for a gf without Nsw or Qld teams participating. The participation numbers are increasing for sure.

The AFL is certainly spending some money promoting their code in QLD and NSW. Whether that is increasing participation numbers is yet to be determined. With GWS, Lions and Suns struggling for crowds and with their abysmal ratings it's a stretch to believe their participation numbers propaganda.

Fair call. But I see AFL posts popping up in various places. I see females and the odd few males that I teach with being active coaches and followers of AFL where in decades gone by this would not be the case. Rugby league is defintely not the household discussion it used to be. Even my longtime mates dont follow it as much as they use to! And this despite the game being fantastic on the field.

The fact that we get within 98% of the afl grandfinal is pretty amazing .. and shows the strength of rl ..

Just wish we could f**king build on this base ..

We do have a few bullets in the gun

We have to go Brisbane 2 Perth .. Adelaide etc in the next 10 years..

We need a plan

Once you start preaching the bullshit"PARTICIPATION NUMBERS " line you've gone full stallion .
Go read the Lawson report on how the AFl use Bullshit participation numbers
Then get back to me

More concerned with rugby league participation numbers. And what I'm seeing in the schools I visit as a teacher. I'm on the ground and have an interest in the future kids playing of sport. Apathy doesn't sit well with me.

If you include the ratings in PNG, New Zealand and elsewhere in our region you’ll see the NRL is the biggest game in our part of the world. As communications increase and borders come down, being clearly number one in our patch will be increasingly valuable.

In fact, as the NRL is played in two countries, the ratings in NZ should be considered too when comparing to the AFL

You're a teacher? Despite the fact you can't spell or can barely write a complete sentence? Seems legit.

I'm taking some of my readers into consideration. :relaxed: Have fat fingers and using mobile phone. Thank you for the 'legit 'comment I think?

And another good reason for an earlier grand final timeslot of 5pm. Gains 8pm NZ tv audience instead of 11pm.

Good ratings seeing as it was NQ against Melbourne and a bit of a blowout. A regional team playing against an expansion club from hostile waters having 80k in attendance at a neutral venue and 3 and a half million watching on TV is very good these days. As was stated above, you can get your entertainment fix from anywhere now at the touch of a button. The NRL ratings seem to be holding up even though the NRL seems to be running on 4 cylinders out of 8. Hopefully the new TV deal kicking off next year I hope they tweak a few things and make 9 stand by its commitments, not holding my breath though.

AFL supporters are just muppets. They're into the comparison and they hate league as we're successful also, they are just different products.they have great stadia in the middle of the city and a real sense of bring at the game. We just don't have that.

I do agree though that afl supporters seem to be popping up but it will continue to be a minority sport I comparison to league in NSW and QLD. Swans vs -the major nrl teams in Sydney. Good luck. Ratings for free to air tv seem to be low as most people in Sydney are at the game or band wagoners.

We are talking tens of millions of $ being pumped into marketing and teams. Brisbane GC are perennial losers these days.

I think what's important is where will we be in 15 years, and that's where the NRL will dominate.

We need to have new teams and I'm glad we haven't expanded to date as we can now be armed with what works best and implement that.
