Wentworthville have held on to beat Newcastle 36-30 this afternoon in a very entertaining NSW Cup game at Parramatta Stadium.
The Magpies got off to a flyer with three tries in the first 20 minutes of play. Winger Semi Radradra scored the match opener following an inception which saw Wenty run the length of the field. It was shortly followed by a four-pointer to centre Brayden Wiliame who barged over close to the line and then prop forward Matthew Eisenhuth made his way across the stripe following a deft inside pass from backrower Daniel Harrison.
The tide quickly turned, as the Knights managed to level the scores 16-all heading into the break, scoring three quick tries on the back of a mountain of possession. That trend continued not long after the halftime interval when Newcastle took the lead for the first time in the match after Peter Matautia crashed over in the corner.
With an even share of the ball and a better completion rate, the Wenty side sprung back into action courtesy of tries to prop Pat O'Hanlon, halfback Brendan Waters and five-eighth Api Pewhairangi. The latter producing a brilliant, 70 metre solo effort, which had the small but vocal crowd rising to their feet.
Magpies backrower Matt Ryan scored, what turned out to be the match sealing try, when he crashed over to extend the lead to 36-20 with 12 minutes left on the clock. The Knights managed a couple of consolation tries late in the game to put some respectability into the scoreline but the day belonged to Wentworthville, who now leapfrog Newcastle on the competition ladder.
Wentworthville 36 (Semi Radradra, Brayden Wiliame, Matthew Eisenhuth, Pat O'Hanlon, Brendan Waters, Api Pewhairangi, Matt Ryan tries; Jake Mullaney 4 goals)
Newcastle 30 (Tyler Randell 2, Josh Mantelato 2, Peter Matautia, Joey Leilua tries; Josh Mantelato 3 goals)
From what i have seen, Semi struggles under attacking pressure while trying to defuse bombs. I was dissapointed with his effort on half time tryin to score in the corner, no attack to palm or get down low. At first i thought he would get there with his speed.
Absolutely agree IBBG. He needed to dive. Most definately should have scored. Dont be too critical of his efforts under the high ball. There isnt a winger in the club that can defuse a bomb under pressure.
Forget the "Junior Accademy". Lets start a "Bomb Difusing Academy" for ALL our wingers. Its such a vital area now days and Parramatta is about the only club that has refused to recognise this.
Apparently we've had one running for the last 3 years. Luke Burt has been mentoring all the up and coming wingers in the art of bomb catching.

I enjoyed that game. Api is a prospect, however I suspect that his impatience at the Knights will also lead him away from the Eels to another club before he gets a sniff at NRL.
Like the 20's, Wenty have zero centres.
Semi will never play FG until he learns how to catch a ball. For regular Wenty devotees, is he normally that weak under the high ball ?
I fear the Terepo might be too small to make it, unless he develops a Tim Mannah motor.
Was impressed how POH and Eisenhuth played. They both are not ready for the step up and need to muscle up to avoid being dominated.

The Wentworthville Magpies will be looking to continue their impressive start to the year when they take on defending Premiers the Newtown Jets at Ringrose Park this Sunday.
Speaking with NSWRL Media, Magpies Coach Brett Cook revealed he was pleased with his sides start to the year whilst admitting there was still room for improvement.
“If you had told me at the start of the year that we’d be 4-1 after five rounds I’d be very happy,” Cook said.
“We have a few things to work on… but considering where we are with a lot of things to improve on we’re off to a good start.”
With a strong core of players led by Jake Mullaney, Taulima Tautai, and Dean Perata, it has been two of the Magpies unheralded forwards who have impressed Cook most over the opening rounds of the competition.
“Pat O’Hanlon and Matt Eisenhuth have been fantastic.
“They’ve been doing a lot of the tight work in the middle of the field and those two, along with Taulima (Tautai) have probably been our best.”
Cook also reserved praise for Newcastle recruit Api Pewhairangi and said the 22-year-old was growing in his new role as Magpies Captain.
“It’s hard to pick a Captain for a feeder team when most players get filtered through from first grade, but with the position he was playing he was taking control of where we needed to be and he was the first one that came to mind as a leader.
“Api is a positive type of character, he’s learning quickly and doing a great job for us.”
Sitting equal with competition leaders the Cronulla Sharks as the best attacking team in the competition, Wentworthville have been leaking an average of 24.8 points per game in a worrying trend that will need to improve as the season progresses.
“I’m happy with the improvements we’ve made to our defensive structures, but we’re letting in a lot of tries on the back of our own errors and that’s putting our defence under unnecessary pressure.”
Facing Newtown this weekend Cook was pleased to welcome back Prop Taulima Tautai, from a one-week suspension, to face a rampaging Jets pack who bounced back to form with a commanding 38-10 victory over the Sea Eagles last weekend.
‘They’re solid across the field… they’ve got some big boys and if they’re allowed to lay a good platform they have a backline that’s more than capable of making you pay for your mistakes.”
The Wentworthville Magpies will take on Newtown Jets on Sunday 14th April at Ringrose Park. Kick-off in the VB NSW Cup will be at 3pm with Ron Massey Cup and True Blue Chemicals Sydney Shield starting from 11.40am.
I hope they have plenty of chip rolls down there...
