I love the debate about the backs in the NSW team, but why are you all ignoring the main problem .
7.M Pearce..fix that & you go a long way to beating QLD.

Who with?

I feel sorry for Mitch, he's the best of a bad bunch.
Try malony,at least he is creative.Wallace is better & im no wallace fan.
Pearce offers nothing on the last tackle,he has no creativity.
He has had many chances, yet delivers nothing.
I have not seen a more overated no 7 in all my yrs of watching footy.

But as a QLDER i hope they keep picking him.

I dunno, didn't they say the same thing about Beaunhead Scott? When it comes to defending someone like Inglis you need to be extremely physical but you need some serious speed as well
Not really. Inglis rarely beats his man with pace. In fact there are few centres who do and Inglis certainly isn't one of them when he's weighing over 100kg. Inglis uses a combination of power, size, footwork and a deadly right fend.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aor6x0BRAp8
I mean, in the entirety of this video is there a single clip where it's pace that is responsible? The first try he sets up, he's being marked by Craig Wing, of all people. It's not speed. It wasn't even particularly bad positioning (I mean he let him get on the outside but he still had a great shot at him). It's poor technique. He goes high and gets fended off. It's nothing to do with pace. And it's just poor analysis that would make someone think, well, he just ran around him like in under 7's. That's not what happened.

Take the second try; was it pace? Well, QLD had an overlap and to make things worse, the one man NSW did have out wide came rushing in and took no one. Now maybe a Josh Morris would've got a hand on him before he got to the line, but if you're depending on that sort of defence on Inglis, chances are you ain't winning that game anyway.

Third try. Idris out of position. Nothing whatsoever to do with pace.

Fourth try. Nothing you can do to stop that on third tackle from Thurston. Defence has to come up, threads it in behind. That's almost indefensible.

Fifth try. Total lack of front line defence. Inglis barges over Gidley likes he's not even there.

Sp yeah, I don't know how pace is a serious concern. Lewis's low-tackling would negate any chance of Inglis getting on the outside and just running around him.

I love Luke but I wouldnt be putting him out in the centres on GI. Like Hutty said, we tried that with Scott and it was disastrous.

NZ have used Mannering in the centres with mixed results. Has he ever marked up on GI?
Mannering has been excellent for NZ in the centres from a defensive point of view. It's one of the reasons why we think Lewis would work too. Because you don't need pace if you have proper tackling technique - which Morris does not.

And I agree with Senor. It's not that Dugan can't pass (though, like Slater, he still sucks from left to right), but his overall ball playing ability is very ordinary. You can't be picking him on that ability over Stewart, let alone Hayne.

You are kidding yeah?

Maloney was crap in 2012, showing just how limited his effectiveness truly is. He simply has no creativity at all. A D.Mortimer mark II

Wallace is no better than Pearce with less rep experience. NSW would gain nothing by picking him

A perfect comparison IMO. Maloney's strength is his support play. It is no coincidence that he has played his best when Mateo was also playing well. His isn't a very effective player beyond that.

& Pearce has been sooooooooooooooooooooo effective at SOO level.
Wallace played one game & played with a ruptered nut.

But by all means defend Junior junior,(As a QLDER i find it hilarious),but one day after a few more losses in SOO ,you might stop defending him,& wake up to the fact that he is useless & only there because of his name.

If others are not given a chance how can you say Pearce is the best option, when he has failed series after series.

Spot the guy who has no idea.
Thanks for playing bloke.

Hmmm, or spot the guys who are Canberra fans on here.

This year Dugan managed 5 try assists and 3 line break assists. I'm loath to use TA and LBA statistics because they are so easy to inflate and unsuited to analysis, however, those are not the numbers of a player who is a good ball player. He is well below most NRL fullbacks. He doesn't pass as much or as well.

......or they just don't suit your argument.

Nah, the problem is that they aren't suited to anything more than really general comparisons. It is hard to tell whether someone really deserved one or not and they can get inflated by playing in a good team. It is too easy to pick them up for throwing the last pass in a back-line maneuver and a lot get awarded for kicks too, which often muddles them further.

You just need to be able to appreciate their limitations when you are looking at them, particularly using them to form really specific comparisons between players. But they do alright for giving a rough guide.

They are obviously not as good as actually watching the game. However, I don't have the time or the inclination to make a video of Dugan's game to justify my views to a couple of Canberra fanboys.

Jarryd Hayne creates more opportunities through ball playing in 5 games than Dugan does in an entire season. At least that's what you'd have to be willing to concede if you insist on the veracity of these statistics.
But even then that isn't absolute because club statistics rarely if ever translate into origin. Origin is just about beating the team across from you, if Hayne has a weakness under the highball then you will expect a lot coming his way, if Dugan has a weakness in ball playing he will be given less respect by the defensive line.

Not necessarily. Nothing is absolute but a player's form and performances at club level can give quite a good indication of how they will play at Origin level. The problem is that people too often focus on a player's short term form (and the statistics associated with it). I find long-term form gives a decent indication. Look at a player's errors, penalties, metres, tackles etc over a 2-3 year period and it is more reliable.

@M_F

Who would you be looking at for the NSW wingers? Morris, Merritt, Gordon ... maybe Uate for a recall? McManus

Gordon would've been one of them for sure were he to play wing for Cronulla. Word is though he will be at fullback. I'd probably still pick him anyway. As for the other side, I don't know. I'd probably keep Brett Morris and just hope that he's turned the corner as an Origin player. I'd be slightly worried though because FMD his first 4 or 5 games were woeful. Who would you have?

I'd take Gordon and Morris too. Morris has enough upside to be worth persisting with (same as Uate, although Uate needs to improve his defence before he is given another shot) and he showed enough in Game 3 and the Test in Townsville to suggest that he could cement his spot.

I'd be extremely tempted to take Merritt just to reward his consistency and to correct the fact that he hasn't been selected previously. However, if I'm totally honest he is only their third or fourth best option so he is only a back up.

As ridiculous as it sounds McManus would be the next one after that but that is inconsequential since he isn't likely to be selected nor do I expect two of Gordon, Morris and Merritt to go down injured.

Um Wallace played 4 games mate and he showed no more than Pearce has

If you actually took the time to read the thread you'll see that no one is "defending junior junior", just acknowleging that NSW simply has no other options
