I think they have other options. Carney should be seriously considered as a replacement for Pearce IMO. Even though he was less than stellar, it was his first series and he did show some signs. Pearce has had 8 straight games and 9 in total, and produced virtually nothing.

I'll bet good money that Adam Reynolds will be picked at some point this year for NSW.......which is pretty ridiculous. I don't rate him, especially after only one season.

Um Wallace played 4 games mate and he showed no more than Pearce has

If you actually took the time to read the thread you'll see that no one is "defending junior junior", just acknowleging that NSW simply has no other options
Wallace did more in his First SOO game than Mythcell has done in all of his combined.
& last Yr even though young & inexperienced,Reynolds was light yrs ahead of Pearce at club level.
But the same Bullshit line is trotted out by NSW (fans ,media & other assorted stupidheads) that there is no one else .

I can only really see that move working if you could find a suitable player to partner Carney. Carney can play a bit of halfback and do a bit of organising but what you would really want is two players who are five-eights who can play a bit of halfback. That way Carney wouldn't shoulder all the responsibility.

I think that system would work fine if you went with Carney and Campese/Mullen/Soward. However, Soward is very badly out of touch, Campese is injured and I'm not sure Mullen would be anything more than a minor improvement over Pearce.

Reynolds was not ahead of Pearce, he is just a beneficiary of playing in a good Souths team where his deficiencies are covered by his teammates. All he does is kick and organise but he is even worse at passing and running than Pearce. Picking Reynolds would just be replacing Pearce with a worse version of himself.

Yeah, I'm sure most NSW fans actually want there to be no other options

Nah, the problem is that they aren't suited to anything more than really general comparisons. It is hard to tell whether someone really deserved one or not and they can get inflated by playing in a good team. It is too easy to pick them up for throwing the last pass in a back-line maneuver and a lot get awarded for kicks too, which often muddles them further.

You just need to be able to appreciate their limitations when you are looking at them, particularly using them to form really specific comparisons between players. But they do alright for giving a rough guide.

They are obviously not as good as actually watching the game. However, I don't have the time or the inclination to make a video of Dugan's game to justify my views to a couple of Canberra fanboys.

No one is saying Dugan is the next Darren Lockyer but he has set up tries from his boot, from a short pass and cut out pass. In his second game as 5/8 against the Knights he set up a few tries. His first game against the Tigers was a disaster though.

Pearce's game 2 was just as good if not better than Wallace's debut.

On the other hand, Wallace's Game 1 & 2 09 is worse than anything Pearce has ever dished up. Terrible.

Carney and Campese are the two best halves from NSW IMO. It's a real shame that they weren't able to stay together at Canberra and play together for NSW. Off-field dramas coupled with constant injuries has meant that they only have 4 games between them (half as many as Pearce alone) when they really ought to have played more.

Yeah mate, we dont want anyone better we just love having an average halfback in our SOO side

Honestly mate, there are no club halfbacks that stand out for NSW. Wallace is solid but despite your opinion is in reality no better than Pearce. Reynolds is a rookie who would be a huge risk given he is barely tested at NRL level let alone SOO. Mullen is a 5/8 who is only just learning to cope with club level pressure. Carney is a 5/8 and has shown little when playing at halfback at club level, just look at his games for the Roosters when Pearce was missing. Maloney was outed as a fraud in 2012. Walsh is a midget who cant defend and is loathed by his club supporter base.

And those are the good candidates.

+1

Pretty good summary of the HB situation for the blues.

I would be talking a good hard look at Sam Williams. I think he is potentially the best young half back of the last decade. He's young but experienced. He's tough. He has no major weaknesses.

I think we will see Dugan slot back in personally. He is a fullback that can be there for the next few years as oppose to other options, if in form/fitness he's also very dynamic to our back line.

Call me crazy but I think Hayne MIGHT just be our 5/8.

Was going to mention Dugan, had a good debut despite us not having any field position. Was dangerous with his chances though, could easily be slotted back into the team

I rate Dugan. Hayne at 5/8 however is a dumb move IMO. I heard a whisper Gordon will be one of the wingers to. So I wonder where that leaves our center/opposite wing.

What's your take on Soward? Just curious.

Defence????

I'm shocked he and Mcrone are being rated highly by some.

Yeah because Furner is an idiot. Tonie Carroll and Paul Gallen have also played at five-eight but it doesn't mean that their passing games are "pretty good".

Dugan is one of the most limited ball players among all NRL fullbacks. He is just like Hoffman and Minichiello in that regard, his strength lies in kick returns and running like a freight train. It has improved from 2010 when he barely looked capable of throwing a pass but he still looks laboured when passing left-to-right and compared to other fullbacks in the game he has got nothing.

Absolutely correct. There is little doubt that Dugan is very effective at destroying ball movement throughout the backline. He butchered a heap of plays for NSW and got in the way too often.
