OT- The Ashes, 2015

I think we'll do ok at Lords, in a not particularly high scoring game. Hazlewood will use the slope well. Presumably Marsh comes in for Watson.

Losing Harris was a killer, as well as his obvious ability he gave a lot more balance to the attack. Stark and Johnson is a bit too much rocks and diamonds. Cummins won't be ready, as much as I like him, and Siddle will run in all day but is now just a stock bowler. I'd have been tempted to bring Chad Sayers in, who swings it around quite a bit.

Sayers is just a military medium swing bowler, I dont think he will ever make it to international cricket.

The pitch was about 70% of the problem in the first test. Our batsman like the ball coming on and it didn't happen in Cardiff, look at how many batsman got caught forward of the wicket, instead of ct behind.

The pitch took the sting out of our bowling attack as well and Haze was struggling getting used to the duke ball.

If we are good enough we need to adjust to these conditions much better then we did in the first test.

That may well turn out to be true, and he's not top of my list but with Hilfenhaus out, Pattinson still recovering, Cummins not having played first class cricket in more than 2 years. At least Sayers has 130 FC wickets at 24 a piece.

Time for Joshy to make his name I guess.

Captain Potato Man is all heart (and Southern Cross tattoo), but he is not up to Test cricket any more.

Wonder if he'll be given as many chances as Watson?

Suity

If he averages 35 with the bat and 33 with the ball he'll get heaps of chances.

His bowling is a bit of a worry. It is not presently of test standard (for a genuine all rounder), but may develop.

He also has quite an injury history, which hopefully is behind him.

Since Sri Lanka, in 2011, Watson has managed
32 tests
1778 runs @ 29.6 (just 2 centuries)

And over the last 4 years he has managed a whopping 19 wickets @ 50.37

I'm not sure if you're following the anti-Watson vibe, but it has a lot to do with those last 32 tests...

I've never been as anti Watson as most of the population, but the one thing you can't do at test level and keep your spot is to keep getting out the same way.

Matt Hayden; (first time) Michael Bevan; Brad Hodge; are all examples I can think of who had much better records but were dropped because of the perception that they were vulnerable to the same mode of dismissal.

I also think watson's bowling is much better than his average suggests and he has a knack of producing something when pitches aren't offering much.

But he's had plenty of chances. I think he's potentially one of the best three batsmen in the team but at some stage you have to produce.

I'm more than happy to see Watson go. He should.

Marsh has been the only credible replacement (as a Test allrounder), and he has been on and off the injury bench. While Watto's recent wicket-taking feats have been unexciting, he can bowl at the Test level and be treated with due respect by Test batsmen. I'm not sure that Marsh can in the long-run, but he's only young and maybe he grows a yard of pace and things change, and maybe he gets a few overs on a greentop.

Those stats say it all, but my biggest gripe with was how can you continually get out the same way for over a decade???? Says to me he never worked hard enough on his game. Add in the fact he never scored many runs under pressure I can't see him being a loss at all.

Steve Waugh early in his career was vulnerable to the short ball outside off stump, and Phillip Hughes was worked out pretty quickly for the same reason.
Sad thing about Hughes was that he had overcome that deficiency and was finally ready, at 25, to rightfully regain his place in the test squad and go on to have a long career. It's so sad he never got that chance.

Katich was another who worked hard and changed his technique and went on to have a very successful career. The key point is worked hard. Something I really doubt Watson has done.
