Yes...wonder which one out of the top 4 is the top score this innings!;-)
I got it wrong for this innings.

There I admitted it like I said I would.

It was a good knock and as I also said, "I hope he proves me wrong"

I'm glad he did, but he's got to follow on with it now.

Love Cowan as an opener personally, old style value your wicket opener. We can't have two reckless openers if Warner is there. I agree, he needs to cement his spot now though, although Adelaide is a great place to bat.

Derp....you realise Cowan got a ton right and we are not dropping Warner for the world's worst fieldman Philip Hughes!
There's still 3 spots in the top 6 that are far from locked in. Cowan, Clarke and Hussey have cemented their spots for the time being but Warner, Quiney and Ponting have not. Warner has now had a longer run without a big score than Hughes did BOTH times he was dropped. In Hughes' last 5 tests he scored a century and 88. Warners best score in his last 5 tests is 50.

This is the test team. You don't play an opening batsman because of his fielding.

This summer Hughes has 3 scores of 83 or higher in 5 first class games and is averageing 42. In 50 over cricket he's averaging 120.

If Watson isn't fit he should be picked ahead of Quiney. He should be picked ahead of Warner. He should be picked ahead of Ponting.

Hughes needs centuries, many of them. His biggest problem is he lacks consistency. too often he fails to back up after a good knock imo.

Also, Test matches last 5 days, not 50 overs. If you Hughes back in the test side, stop bringing up the pointless shit about his One Dayer stats. Its a different environment entirely.

I remember a couple years back about selectors saying they looked at players limited over form when picking Test players.

They play so few shield games and so many limited overs games.

If he was a lower order batsman then you'd be right. One day form would be irrelevant. But as an opener he gets an opportunity to bat for long enough in one day games to show Test relevant form.

If he bats for say 40 overs and scores 100, what difference is that to batting for 40 overs and scoring 100 in FC/Test cricket.

Averaging 120 in one day games this season will not go unnoticed by selectors.

If Warner can't make a score on the road that is Adelaide, his position should be in jeopardy and the first name that should be looked at is Hughes.

And as for him needing centuries, he has scored 95, 83 and 92 in 5 games this season. Would a combined 30 runs extra in those innings really make a difference?

Well you can rule Ponting out because on your theory alone of scoring runs in the shield Ponting has more runs and a higher average then Hughes this year. Then factor in the leading run scorers for the shield being Khawaja(430@47.77), Ferguson(376@41.77), Doolan(367@61.16), Ponting(355@118.33), Cosgrove(331@36.77) and then we have Hughes with 326@46.57. On the theory that runs in the shield equals test selection then Hughes looks a bit down the pecking order imo and also if you are including is ODD form then you may as well credit Warner with the runs he got in the WT20. On Hughes ODD form it is very deceiving despite averaging 123 he has a top score of 114 which is nearly half his runs for the year(ranked second with 246).

Just because selectors were looking at it, doesn't justify it.

It's stupid to use those figures, its a much stricter environment, with restictions on field placings etc and power plays to help batsmen and bowlers get a massive advatage over the opposition for periods of the game.

Only a moron would dare try and use One Day stats to justify someone being picked in test cricket sides. That is fact.

All you're doing is plucking out favourable stats for Hughes to prove your point.

Its a dumb and amateur way of having an argument.

The only one that has not cemented a spot is Warner and he is a better all round cricketer than Hughes. Like it or not, fielding and part time bowling is a big plus, he is the total package, and you can carry someone like him if your top order is making runs. He is like Sehwag...7 or 8 times out of 10 they fail but the 2 or 3 times they don't they singlehandly win test matches!

Averaging 42...woopie do, that is hardly a great average. I do not care about limited overs rubbish, different game. He needs big hundreds in Shield cricket.

keep in mind Khawaja has played on some tough decks and come out on top. Hughes has the luxury of adelaide oval, considered by many as Australia best batting deck
