Cowan will fail again. Hughes is next in line.

They most likely give Cowan at leat 2 tests as a minimum. If we are winning games , he may play out the whole SA series. Hughes just need to keep scoring and his name up there, should get another chance you would think, soon or soonish

Phil Hughes will definitely get another chance at some stage and will probably be at the top of the Aussie order for some time

The timing of it will depend on how he goes personally though and averaging 39 in Shield Cricket isn't setting the world on fire

I'm just hoping that whenever Hughes does get a chance, he actually gets a proper go like Cowan has. Hughes has never been given a fair go. Including being dropped 3 tests after being the youngest in history to scory 2 100s in a test.

He should be given a minimum of one 5 test series or 2 three test series when he does get a go.

yeah agree with that. now that the person who replaced him as opener last time (Sunshine) looks like to be the official no3

Having said that, if our top 3 go ok, could be a long wait for Hughes. After all, we want Australia winning and firing whoever is in the lineuip

The one I am waiting for is Nic Maddinson, in my view he is better than Hughes. I also like Liam Davis as an old fashioned opener. I just feel technically those two are better suited to test cricket. Hughes still has flaws.

Nic Maddinson averages 32.82, is very inconsistant. Liam averages 35, and has done nothing (he is 28 as well, needs to be doing far better to get a gig)

Hughes is next in line unless he keeps nicking them in the slips for not too many

Maddinson started his career well but has been a bit of disappointment really

At the moment maybe but I back Maddinson over the career in test cricket, I feel he suits test cricket more.

Cowan hasn't been even "ok" his entire Test career. He's not about to start now.

Phil Hughes should not be talked about until he averages fifty plus a season for next four seasons

Actually he is, he values his wicket and also he is a MUCH better fielder.
call me crazy, but I don't pick opening batsmen because of their fielding ability.

May as well pick fast bowlers for their wicket keeping ability too eh?

Cowan's test performances, in a modern test arena that favours batsmen more than bowlers in more countries than before, show that he's not good enough.

I plead for him to prove me wrong and I will say I got it wrong if he does score a shitload of runs.

But I don't think he will.

I'm not saying Hughes should be in there either. I think there are other alternatives to Hughes and Cowan, however I don't see any of them being any different to Hughes. Capable of scoring big runs, also capable of choking and getting out cheap.

Make Ponting open with Warner. He can help steady Warner if he stays trying to go all twenty20. It allows a new middle order to get settled and ready to take over from him.
