What 21 year old will move across the country by themselves. Throw in an injury or 2 and the mental space
Millions do. Hundreds of millions do.

I recommend they the do to.

21 grow up, take the opportunity.

Perth and Brisbane 2 are who be my next two teams.

I worry that Perth has few quality schools teams, and Brisbane 2 would would have half Melbourne juniors.

Didnt have a problem recruiting in 1994 when the world was a much bigger place! If you want an NRL contract, or want to be that $million player you will move, been proven in other sports.

They are either getting signed up to Qland cup or NSW cup teams or going back to the NRLWA league. We were planning to have a State cup team by next year but that has all gone very quiet. Would be a waste of money unless there is a definite plan for an NRL club in next 5 years.

We are talking a 3 year period though. GC didn’t having any issues over the 1st 3 seasons the last 10 have been shocking.

There will be an 18th team 3-4 years after the 17th. The 9th game makes money the bye doesn’t.

Agreed, no one likes a bye despite what Vlandys says about player welfare!
Gold coast have, on paper at least signed decent and some big name players, over the years. Sometimes success is more than just player recruitment.

Next year will have a bye despite an even number. There isn’t 60 odd quality extra players to fill 2 teams especially losing lower grades this year. I took it as him trying to sell that fact

Well in what way can GC be seen as a success?

He more or less said that as Queensland is one of the game's nurseries. They need to strengthen that State so that things like State of Origin don't wither as he mentioned it as being the code's biggest money earning event.

Loves using fear to get his point across.

Perth ATM doesn't guarantee ratings, will cost a hell of a lot more to establish ,and airfares are so damn expensive, such that costs could well exceed revenue.

Hello, Adelaide!

FMD you're a whinger.

You do realise Peter Cumins was part of the 95-97 Western Reds venture that was kicked out because it couldn't cover the costs of running a club, right?

"Perth businessman Peter Cumins, who was on the board of the Western Reds during Super League and also behind the push for the West Coast Pirates."

https://amp.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/pe...-no-chance-says-v-landys-20200213-p540c0.html

Maybe that's why the NRL keep knocking back his bid?

I do find it ironic that after all these years, Cumins' Cash Converters is still the only major sponsor for RL in Perth. It says that the business community in Perth weren't interested in the game in 95 and still only care about fumbleball. V'landys is right to stay clear of this place.

Didn't the Reds have to foot the bill for all visiting teams 2 grades plus accomodation?

I thought the whole interview was rubbish tbh. How is the NSW gov going to magically fix up or build this gamut of suburban stadiums when they’ve said they now don’t have the money or now want to spend it in a different manner than stadiums? Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for Brookvales and Leichardts getting some renovations but he is kidding himself that they will be fixed up any time soon.

The whole 17th team thing is a joke as well, everyone hated the bye before the Titans came along. The game in QLD doesn’t need more f**king teams, all 3 are absolute basket cases at the moment, why the f**k would you throw even more teams at this part of the world.Perth is a no brainer for mine, I cannot understand why he continually shits on expansion over there. I don’t see the value adding one team alone, you need an extra game if you want more money from the broadcaster. Which who even knows what the f**k the game is going be getting from broadcasters even without potential expansion as he won’t reveal the deal made with fox or the cuts with the remaining 2.5 years with nine.

He's not making the decision otherwise we'd have two teams which is logical and increases revenue. Just look at any other popular code who expanded around the world. He's just spruiking on behalf of the broadcasters. He comes up with BS reasons to justify the self interest of broadcasters etc.

While I'm not sure about all grades etc - that's my understanding of what happened in a simplistic way. They had a competitive team, they had decent crowds (at an RL-unfriendly venue like the WACA) - but the travel cost burden was a back-breaker from what I know.

It was, handicapped them from the start.

The game was on the up there at the time.

Given now they have a great rectangular stadium, grant from the league covers salary cap, running of clubs nowadays is way more professional they would be in a better position. However there are now 2 AFL teams in Perth rather then one that were there in 1995.

There's plenty who've moved down to the Storm ok enough.

Granted it's closer to Sydney but many have gone down from Qld and done ok too.

They have. They also send their excess players to QLD Cup team. Giving them family time when up there.

Same reason you get very few Aussies going to play at Warriors. Those with families of their own it is good but not a single guy

While it's a while ago, I'm pretty sure it wasn't an issue in their time with SL and was a major reason they defected over. It was when it all came back to the ARL that they got absolutely pumped on this.

As far as 2 AFL teams now instead of 1 - I don't see that as an issue at all. There is a big appetite for League there, and many I know who live there say they'd love a local team. Perth is like Adelaide in that while they have their AFL teams - they will back any team that plays from their town. I've got absolutely no doubt that an NRL team from either/both these cities would get fans to the games in droves. But both have things going against them. Perth > Distance, Adelaide > Junior set up (pretty much nothing).

A single guy going to Perth would absolutely carve it up... Score all sorts of sorts under the radar..

But seriously, As long as the set up is professional I don't see an issue. It could possibly be more beneficial for some types of folk. Cricketers play away from home all the time, and for far longer than the football codes. It comes down to the person.

The club was a basket case, averaging less than 9,000 in 1996 and 1997. Having to pay for visiting teams' flights didn't help, but there's no way they could have survived on crowds below 9,000 without a Leagues Club. Pokies are illegal in WA. The media were not fond of the team and sponsors were hard to find. Players didn't want to relocate.

Interest in the game has gone backwards over there. When NSWRL games were taken to the WACA before the Reds werepart of the development plan of Arthurson and Quayle, crowds of over 20,000 attended. These numbers have dropped considerably for games at the much better venue Perth Oval. The population there is much higher these days so that is an alarming trend.

Crowds dropped everywhere due to Super League even the Broncos only attracted 25,000 for a semi against Parra at Suncorp whereas the year before they drew 40,000 v Norths.

Infact the Broncos attracted an average of 36,000 in 1995 finishing 3rd, in 1996 they had dropped to 23,700 and they finished 2nd on the ladder.
