Doesn't seem to be a problem for AFL fans in Melbourne, where all 8 Melbourne teams are within 8km of the CBD.

Like Tai keeps telling us Sydney isnt Melbourne, sadly. If it was it wouldn't be such a problem (though dont kid yourself that there arent at least 2 Melbourne clubs that are constant strugglers and the AFL would probably be better off without).

Yep. At least our clubs are based around widespread regions/districts of the city. Theirs are actually inner-city suburbs. The Sutherland Junior League itself probably has a similar geographical footprint to most of the suburban VFL teams.

lol, you think they draw their fanbase from where the team is named? Carlton has about 18k population and 65k members!

So Vlandys is saying he is changing refs due to a fan poll? Really??
Is it right that the fan poll didnt even have that question it? :)

No, but our clubs are spread out over broader city regions that are removed from the inner city. And some have a similar population to regional areas like Wollongong, Central Coast or Newcastle.

f**k this conversation is tedious.

So question for everyone on Peter V'Landys:

How will everyone feel when he has cut investment in the game to give more money to clubs, signed an extension to the TV rights during an economic downturn, changed how the game is officiated based on a News Limited poll, and then leaves because there is zero change he will stay to run both the NRL and Racing NSW?

As long as Bryce Cartwright gets his jab...I could care less.

The fan poll referenced is the Daily Telegraph poll that did have a question about 1 ref v 2 ref.

The coaches and players have said it will slow things down, international vs NRL show that it will slow things down, and the referees are against it.

Why consult with the people in the game when you can just base it on a poll from an antiquated and heavily biased newspaper?

EPL: 6 teams in a city of over 9 million = 1.5milion per club
NRL: 9 in a city of 5 million = 550k per team.

You make a good point.

There are 12 teams in London.
So 750k per team.
You can't tell me QPR's fans in Div 2 (whatever they call it now) and go for Arsenal or Tottenham.

hang on it’s not like perth where you lose a club and there isn’t another one in 2000kms! Lose a Sydney club and there’s still a heap within 40kms of your house! Such a suburban mentality that you have to have a club within 10kms or people won’t follow the game.
Tribalism at its best, you yourself are also following tribalism Perth "western" Red "s" no matter how you spin it sydney is the heartland, and every tribe has fences, yours was there for 3 years and was extremely far away but it existed as if was next door, as much as nz and Melbourne, there is tribalism

Tell me how long is the tradition of that club,5 years,50 years 100 years.Long enough to build real tribalism? You ask many, they follow the club first, the game second.
See the sign "Souths til I dies" at club games."
Those guys would teach you a thing or two.And you are lecturing Sydney club fans, about their preferences. LOL.

You were the one who stated juniors went over to the Force and indeed their fans, when Perth was flicked.BTW I didn't want any team flicked including the Reds
When rl teams are demoted to a lower division in the UK, they retain their crowds?
When you guys got the whiff of SL, your numbers dropped off.

Who says they don't follow the club or game.I've already pointed out in another post, people within the area who have large numbers of club number plates and merchandise seen walking around on many occasions.

And you still publicly display your ignorance about tribalism. As has been pointed out losing ones club is not going to get the fan of that club to follow another .I've met former North Sydney fans who don't follow another clubs few who followed the Waratahs when they had some following.

Until you can grasp that point, and continue using your vivid imagination that people will jump on board another club, you won't get the picture in Sydney.
The suburban mentality draws Tv ratings in Sydney. The crowds when Manly played North Sydney at times were large. You were probably in Hull ATT.

You have to wonder why there wasn't a SuperLeague war in AFL.

Was told the reason Murdoch didn't go for the AFL ATT, can't remember exactly what.
Ribot and Co got into Rupert's ear at a function, saying you want to start Pay Tv ,this code will give you the ratings.
Wish they had of hit the AFL and drained their resources. They stuffed up our game for too bloody long.

And you think the AFL will relocate them? They have stated via Gil they have no plans to do so.Remember when they tried a merge involving Hawthorn,.there was a revolt, why tribalism in the ned prevailed.
The only possibility would be Tasmania an AFL state.WA an AFL state.
And the decent numbers of Melbourne clubs that also get decent poker machine monies that won't be there long term. The way the AFL operates the give more money to the struggling, non heartland clubs.
Once all Sydney NRL clubs are back to the business end ,with their grants, sponsors, reduced management costs, they should all be at worst breaking even or having a small manageable loss.

I mean the AFL did send the South Melbourne Swans to Sydney. And Fitzroy Lions were merged with the Brisbane Bears.

I think we really do need to stop the Sydney (NRL) and Melbourne (AFL) comparison.

Yes, the AFL has a number of teams based in within a short distance to the CBD and fans are from all over Melbourne. But we need to remember a couple of things with this:
  • Being all close to the city means they are not playing far from their heartland when they play in the two stadiums.
  • This is also helped by a better/easier designed city that most outer suburbs require one train to travel in.
  • Of the 9 Melbourne AFL clubs, the youngest was founded in 1902. Their youngest Melbourne team has multiple generations of supporters.

To compare these three points for Sydney and the NRL:
  • Sydney teams are separated 60km from East to West. Each team generally plays in their home territory - with a few exceptions (Souths, part-Tigers).
  • Due to the size and the CBD being based on a coastline and harbour, the Public Transport is not as easy to use. A fan travelling from Parramatta to Cronulla will need to be on two trains, etc.
  • The oldest Sydney club was established in 1908. The youngest (outside of the 2000 merger to form West Tigers) is 1966.

You have to wonder why there wasn't a SuperLeague war in AFL.

Well the VFL was actually it’s own super league in 1896 when teams left the VFA to start it.

I’d suggest the main reason Murdoch couldn’t start a super league rival to the AFL is because the clubs signed over to the AFL in the mid 80s. Team names, player contracts and licensing were all owned or tied up with the AFL.

There’s also the fact the AFL was a well run organisation and wasn’t purely relying on the broncos to prop up the league, so they weren’t foolish enough to allow a Packer or Murdoch to have huge influence over the game

Rugby League has more potential and it always has had. They could see the $$$. It just failed in comparison to WSC due to changing the game too much.
