It's careless. Yeah he's going for the ball but he also should be aware of where the man is (and he would be to some degree). It's accidental to a point, but he did cannon straight into an airborne players legs, too.

It is against the rules, though. You've never been allowed to take the legs of an airborne player contesting a kick in the NRL, accidental or otherwise.

Much like an accidental high tackle is still against the rules.

Of course they can run to catch it. You can also attempt to charge a ball down with your shoulder, but you can’t make contact with someone in the process can you.

Not at all.

But much like there is an onus on not hitting a bloke in the head if you're going to tackle with a swinging arm, there is also an onus on not barrelling into someone's legs when you've been out-jumped. And much like an accidental high tackle, it's still a penalty if you accidentally take out a bloke in the air.

I don't for a moment think Moylan did it deliberately, but people get penalised for accidental contact on various forms every game just about.
