Referencing Norman?
Millward and Mary had already indicated they wanted a replacement fullback for 2019. When it became obvious that Hayne was not going to be that player, they then turned their attention to Norman.

Hayne was the player they hoped would play fullback until Dufty was ready, who could play centre until Lafai or Aitken were no more and who could play on the wing or at five-eighth if that is what is needed.

Now we have Widdop playing fullback until Dufty is ready. Norman playing five-eighth long term and the lunacy of playing Dufty on the bench and Hunt at hooker. I have to say Mary is not only useless, he is a fool.

The idea of playing Widdop at fullback, who is recovering from an injured shoulder, does not make sense to me. The question to be asked is, which is worse, playing an injured Widdop or a Dufty who needs further development? It now appears to me that playing Dufty would be the better rout mainly because:
Nothing will be gained playing an injured Widdop. His hesitation in defence delivers the same result as Dufty's lack of confidence in defence. I'd say Widdop needs to be rested until his injured shoulder is fully recovered.

By playing Dufty at fullback now, Widdop gets time to recover, Dufty gets time to prove himself even if that means SGI losing a few games and Norman gets to show his skills at five-eighth.

When Widdop is finally fit to play, the form of Dufty and Norman need to be taken into consideration. Options of using Widdop and Field in the 17 and where they play is then on the table.

The good thing about going the Dufty/Norman way first up is that Robson can then be picked at 14 and given the opportunity to show is stuff in the hooker/lock rotation with McInnes.

Didn’t Wayne Bennett once include Kyle Stanley at fullback despite coming back from a joint injury?

If Dufty isn't ready this year, then he never will be ready. He isn't going to develop his game sitting on the sideline either and getting possibly 10 to 15 minutes some weeks and other times no game time what so ever.

You're absolutely right and that is why Mary is the first one who must be let go. We had so many options for coach last year however, the old boys could see that Mary would be safe if we waited for other clubs to pickup those coaches.

I agree, we should have replace Mary last year, the year before and the year before. He must be the luckiest coach in the NRL to still have his job.

Exactumundo.
Agree in part. At his best, he is a very dangerous attacker with a slick kicking and passing game.

Problem is that his best is rare (usually when playing against us) and the gap to his usual (and worst) games is huge.

He was absolutely, 100% surplus to requirements. Would have been better using this year to prep Field to take over from Widdop.

Each to his own but while McInnes is a good player he is so predictable. No kicking game and doesn’t run enough. His penalty count is too high, albeit sometimes, admittedly to allow us to reset. Yep Robson is unproven. Many Australian Schoolboys, State of Origin junior representatives and members of the ISP teams of the year don’t make it, but he will be a great buy for the Dogs. According to an assistant trainer for the Canterbury side, it is close to a done deal. He said that the money the Dogs were offering was surprisingly high. Negotiations have been going on for sometime so he gave us time to keep him. I guess Hunt will play hooker for part of the game most weeks. Robson will develop into a good buy for the Dogs.....sigh

Thanks for the info ...Makes me sick to the stomach, especially that he is going to the dogs.

Recruitment/retention/pathways all MIllward's responsibility. E.g. remember when Millward did not want to extend Dugan and Mary did, yes Dugan was not extended.

The excuse given by SGI management for the role of recruitment/ retention/pathways to be separated outside of the control of the head coach was to provide stability over the long term and to ensure the coach did not have final say on the makeup of the the player squad.

Millward is to provide Mary with a squad to coach. Retaining Robson is Millward's responsibility no matter what Mary thinks about McInnes.

All true-BUT- I'm talking about skill development. Who is actually helping the Hosts of this club to move to the next level and become starting players. It seems to me we have a revolving door of specialist coaches, assistant coaches, consultants coming and going from this club. The latest to arrive tis year with great fanfare is Mick Crawley. Luke Phillips was last years trumpeted announcement. Do we now have so many assistants, consultants, specialists, high performance staff to "support" Mary, Hornby and Dean Young that they're treading on one anothers toes with no clear roles and nothing gets done?

All the head coaches responsibility and that's another good reason why Mary should be sacked.

Let's face it, the only way we have any chance of finding out if Robson is going to be a gun first grade hooker is if 1) McInnes sustains a long term injury and McGregor resists moving Hunt to dummy half or 2) Robson, like Cook before him gets a chance with a smart progressive club under a smart coach for more money. There is next to no chance that McGregor can manage / balance the situation to keep Robson interested at St George as well as provide a potent weapon to the first grade team.

this year or next?

The Dogs announced their FULL 30 man squad for 2019, so unless they plan to release a current member of their 30, which I highly doubt, any rumoured signing of Robson must be for 2020.
The other factor is the story maybe just a gee-up.

Yep.

The chasm and consistency between Norman and Widdop is vast.
