Speaking of soft drinks,

kmart-accola.jpg

50 cents a can from vending machines at the front of Kmart. Also iirc the first brand to have caffeine free cola.

Lol, the phone card is a blast from the past too.

1960s Sunbeam Mixmaster. I remember licking the beaters clean after Mum finished beating the cake mix.

Being an only child, I didn't have any competition. Yeah!

My mother gave away a perfectly good working one she had from 1955 to a friend sometime in the early to mid 70s because she bought a Kenwood mix master, was so annoyed when she did, yes licking the beaters clean was a highlight.

Who remembers GEST soft drink? Their catchphrase was "Our State Drinks" - yet another Aussie classic that was bought out by the yanks!

1980s
During the nineteen-eighties, the Kirks, Shelleys (NSW) and Gest (WA) brands shared a range of drinks with consistent packaging style and marketing material. Each brand was marketed to its own state of origin.

Merger
In 2000, now under Coca-Cola Amatil, the brands Kirks, Shelleys and Gest, along with Halls (SA), and Marchants, were unified, all taking the name of the Queensland bottler nationwide. The relaunch campaign aimed to evoke nostalgia for the door to door soft drink delivery by local brands in the 1960s to early 80's. Remnants of the original structure remain, as some flavours traditionally produced by local bottlers are only available in certain states.

In 2006, Kirks' packaging and advertising materials were redesigned, and again in 2014 with a more modern look.

Shandy. It was a quarter beer and marketed as "brewed soft drink", and available in corner shops. About 1% abv I would guess. You couldn't drink enough of it to feel anything. I was a major customer at the age of 15 (around 1970) but I think it faded away pretty quickly. Coopers was probably the market leader but there was a Halls West End as well and perhaps others. Clearly they were from South Aussie.

I use to run around the phone boxes collecting these phone cards. We didn't have internet and my parents wouldn't buy us a Mega Drive so as kids we went outdoors. Kids would even swap and collect them at school.

I quite fancied Ann Marie.

Theresa wasnt bad either :)

It was a top show, I remember Crikey the Clown got asked to eat a sandwich made up of mixed food products, I think he may have thrown up backstage or something lol

Does anyone remember there was a Footy Show style show on Channel 7 in 1995?

I cant remember what it was called, it was hosted by some bloke then there was a hostess.

They had agro on there and would interview players like Walters, Sailor, Carne,

I dont think it lasted long, probably half a year if not less. but one of my memories was agro in his Queensland jersey and have the name "Lewis" at the back of it.

I remember that show. Think it was "The Hard Yards"?? It was probably the worst 10 minutes of TV I've ever watched before I turned it off. Remember they had Sirro & Gary Freeman do some sketch lighting a wick that was sticking out of a footy - some kind of pun for a "Bomb". Horrible Horrible.

I thought Shelleys was our state drink? Well in NSW at least. I was actually trying to find one of the old ads on youtube but they dont have the version. I remember the tune. I dont remember GEST - were they an interstate brand maybe?

If it isn't a Shelleys, it's a fizzer.

I wrote to the ads tribunal a few years back when they did Kirks ads inferring they had always been our drink and some 100 years crap.

Said it was false and misleading.

Also Homestead Chicken. My mother in law says they used to make awesome fried crumbed mushrooms. Couldn't remember the place yesterday and just saw picture in this thread and she was over the moon.

The crumbed mushrooms were probably the best thing Homestead did but their chicken was pretty good too.

The thing is GEST was the company in WA and Shelley's was in NSW - you are correct. However both companies are owned by Kirks which is how both labels are branded today

Thanks mate. It was killing me all week. That would explain why it didnt last, trying to be a footy show style.

I remember Channel 7 still had their league show on a Sunday morning, right before the Sunday Footy Show.

Graham Hughes was the host with Roy Masters, Steve Mortimer I think. Wasnt a bad show.

Then at 11 am we would switch to 9 with the Sunday Footy Show with Fatty as the host, Sterlo, Blocker and the occasion guest hosts. Real serious footy talk.

Both shows gave good reviews of the games on Friday night and Saturday, sometimes Saturday night, if the games were at Gold Coast, Shark Park or Brisbane. And Im pretty sure both shows were in front of a live audience.

I love how sometimes when they are renovating a building you can sometimes see the old Shelley's signage from years ago from the old shop fronts and awnings.
