THE NRL has indicated it will extend the June 30 deadline for player registrations if St George Illawarra needs more time to finalise a deal for Mark Gasnier.
The Dragons are locked in talks with their former captain and it seems only a matter of time before he makes his return to the NRL. However, St George Illawarra officials held further talks with the NRL yesterday as they attempt to piece together a deal for the former NSW and Australia centre.
The NRL has offered a helping hand should it take longer than expected. While clubs are required to have players contracted by June 30 if they want them to play this year, NRL chief David Gallop has the discretion to register deals after that date.
Gallop yesterday indicated he would be willing to do so in the case of Gasnier given the NRL has extended the deadline for registering contracts for next season -- clubs have until round 17 to finalise those deals.
"We have had a meeting with them today and we are still in discussions," Gallop said.
"You can sign after June 30 with our permission and given we changed the registration date (for next season) to the end of round 17, we would allow a short period of flexibility."
Like every other club in the game, the Dragons are sweating on the outcome of the salary cap review which is currently being undertaken.
The salary cap review committee met yesterday and will take a series of recommendations to the club chief executives this month.
It appears certain the long-serving player allowance and third-party agreements will be extended for next season, giving every club more room under the salary cap.
Two of those clubs -- Newcastle and the Warriors -- have also made a play for Gasnier but it appears forlorn given his desire to return to St George Illawarra.
"There's nothing to confirm at the moment because we're working on it," Dragons chief executive Peter Doust said.
