I dont get the Courier Mail, but my parents do.. I visited yesterday and went straight for the newspapers to look through the articles on the RLWC.

According to the Courier Mail its not actually on... no coverage at all. Nothing. (in Brisbane Australia BTW)

Stories are buried at the very "back" of the sports section in the daily telegraph too.

Apart from yesterday, because of Melbourne Cup, I CBF getting the papers, cause they'll talk about the same rubbish and there's very little mention of the World Cup which is disgraceful.

At least watching Fox Sports News and Channel 7 news they always mention the World Cup.

Yeah I don't bother any more. Even the online versions of newspapers. They're a dying form of media, especially since they started charging to view them online.

It's getting more coverage in Victoria than the NRL thanks to Ch7 mentioning it on every news programme and there updates on mate.

In fact for mine it's massively showing up 9 in that respect, who treat League as the bastard step child here.

Australians ignoring international RL shocker. Really your surprised. SOO is promoted as the pinnacle of the game in Australia, why are you surprised the media ignores int RL?

Great viewing figures in UK, they so need to get SL on fta.

"Both England games played on the BBC peaked at over two million viewers - these are new figures for us," he said.

Getting the ESL on FTA would surely be a huge boost for league in the UK. What are the obstacles preventing it from happening if the ratings are said to be solid?

Free to air sport in the UK is not like FTA TV in Australia.

I've been living in the UK for almost 2 years now and can't believe how little sport they play on FTA. The biggest reason is that they don't have anything as comprehensive as the Australian anti-siphoning legislation in place (legislation that ensures marquee sporting events are available to all via free-to-air), and as such not even the English Premier League get shown on FTA, it's all on Sky Sports and BT Sport (Pay TV). The occasional international soccer match or Champions League match gets shown on Channel 4 or ITV (FTA), but that's about it.

BBC show the occasional rugby league game (challenge cup seems to be their main preference), but that's about it. To be honest, rugby league actually does well on FTA over here when you compare it to what other sports get.

So basically to sum up - aiming for free to air coverage in the UK is an unrealistic goal given that soccer can't even manage it.

You could be right. I don't understand how the Challenge Cup would be rated more prestigious than basically any match in the Premier League though. I have no interest in soccer, but you can't deny it's by far the most popular sport over here and as such should feature matches that are included in such legislation if it exists.

Channel 4 never show soccer. The reason SL isn't on FTA is because no FTA channel will pay what Sky pay.

The media coverage of the RLWC has been pretty poor here in Australia. Sometimes I wonder if the Cup is even on.

smh website has been very good.

news.com.au has been ok, no worse than their standard NRL coverage anyway :sarcasm:

Not sure about the actual papers, I only read the websites (No i don't pay, they can get f**ked)

Best coverage for mine has been The Roar though, somewhat surprisingly.

Despite the lack of coverage in the media, most people I know are following the WC and actively enjoying it. There are gripes about it being on 7mate and missing games as a result (most people can't record this channel), but I am surprised by the level of interest.

Yes, I agree.

Channel does not show the right amount of respect for the game of RL In a lot of scenarios.

7mate has provided a great coverage, although I would think the final should have been on the more higher profile Prime 7 channel.

Pay TV sports news coverage has been good but I wonder why the FOX network did not cover the world cup in addition to 7 mate?

This is a great tournament and RL deserves to grow and benefit from it!
