I really hope Lawrence can cement his spot down. That offload for the try was brilliant, he should always have someone like teddy or simona run off his left shoulder as he generally hits the line with his right shoulder and if he can get his arms free and get a sneaky offload off we may score a few similar tries this year.

You lot should have put 50 on the Warriors at least.
I think your in for a long season as you won't play any worse sides than the Warriors.

Mate, it's Round 1 and they are a young team with improvement in them and with Brooks to come into the side...

They showed me enough yesterday that they will go ok provided they get a good run from the injury gods (for once- they are overdue...)

And for those who are interested in the reserves.

It was a hard-fought battle in the heat at Campbelltown Stadium, as the Wests Tigers hosted the Manly Sea Eagles in their first-round encounter. After weathering the storm throughout the first half, however, the Tigers were able to put on a convincing display through a Josh Drinkwater masterclass to emerge Round 1 winners.

Tensions threatened to boil over early in the contest, when Manly prop Josh Starling was put on report for a late shot on Jesse Parahi. Opting not to take the two points, the Tigers were held out by a solid Sea Eagles defence.

The home side returned the favour 10 minutes later, holding up Starling in-goal as the game developed into a grind. Fatigue began to set in for both sides and so too did the errors; the Tigers were let off after absorbing pressure on their line after a knock-on, before Manly were gifted a similar fate. The game was locked at nil-all going into the first drinks break.

With the game still truly in the balance, the visitors suffered what would be a killer blow; a heartbreaking wrist injury to key recruit Tim Moltzen prevented him from exacting revenge on his former club as he left the field and didn’t return. The home side would be unable to replace Moltzen’s experience at the back.

Tigers’ winger John Tohi looked certain to score shortly after the break, but was held up once again. It took until the 28th minute for the home side’s fullback Watson Heleta to break the deadlock with a simple charge from dummy-half, converted by Drinkwater for a 6-nil lead.

The Sea Eagles would soon hit back, however, through a simple set play to the left-hand side. Winger Halauafa Lavaka crossed in the corner, but it went unconverted and the home side retained a 6-4 lead at half-time.

Scoring started early in the second stanza; Heleta combined nicely with much-hyped flyer Josh Addo-Carr to bag a long-range try under the posts. The damage was later compounded as halfback Josh Drinkwater put Nathan Milone through to score, unconverted for a 16-4 lead.

It was after almost an hour of play in the heat of South West Sydney that the Tigers really began to exploit the Sea Eagles’ defence; new recruit Drinkwater showed his worth once again as a second good short ball found centre Chance Peni, who extended the lead before the second drinks break.

In the final quarter, Manly tried desperately to mount a comeback; a slick ball to Ben Fritz had him certain to score, but was called forward. The Tigers made them pay soon after, marching downfield before Drinkwater set up Peni once again, this time through a neat grubber in-goal to register an insurmountable 26-4 lead.

NRL late scratching Feleti Mateo eventually found space for a consolation try in the 70th minute, with Dylan Kelly adding the extras. A break from Addo-Carr almost saw the home side hit back, but the Manly defence was too strong. They couldn’t contain him minutes later, however, showing scintillating speed and a handy chip-and-chase to score his second of the afternoon. Drinkwater converted to bring up 34 points for the home side.

The visitors weren’t giving up yet and with just one minute remaining they regained the ball from the kick-off. A nice ball from Tom Symonds saw Mateo grab his second, with the extras added for a 34-16 full-time score.

There were promising signs in patches for the Sea Eagles, but coach Luke Williamson will look to address their obvious fatigue in the second half – while also worrying about the availability of Moltzen. The Tigers took some time to find their form, but with Drinkwater steering the team around and providing good service to Peni and Addo-Carr, they looked very threatening late in the game.

The Tigers host the New Zealand Warriors in their Round 2 encounter, while the Sea Eagles travel to Ringrose Park to take on the Wentworthville Magpies.

just to put a positive spin on this..... I'm positive this will be a bad season.

we are probably 6 ploders too many for a good NRL team. I really hope Sironen finally has his break out season, Lawrence continues to improve as a forward, Lovett and Buchanan have figured out how to play football and Moses realizes that he won't get another contract with any NRL team if he doesn't show more then the 'potential' that we keep hearing about.

rant over but I'm not confident of a win until Farah gets back or when we play Titans in round 3 or Knights in round 6

Never been so happy to be wrong, What a a way to start the season. Moses was on fire. Really turned it up with his passing game and showed his potential. I really hope he keeps growing.

Agree MU, hard for me to be excited by it after the second half.

I'll watch the game again tomorrow but I thought woods was average. The mannering try was his fault and he made a few other mistakes too

3 - Moses
2- Sue
1 - Lawrence/Grant

Taking positives that we scored 6 tries and had 2 disallowed even though Teddy was pretty quiet (he missed brooks)

Teddy missed Brooks and Woods missed Farah.

Woods without Farah becomes a one dimensional ball hog.

Sironen had his best game as a back rower in ages. Still has a long way to go, but finally he lookslike he might be capable of fulfilling some of his promise.

Didn't like seeing Cherrington start from the bench. Despite the good start, if we are to convince him that his future is here, he needs to be given 100% support and be allowed to start when Farah and Ballin are out.

From the NSW Cup 'team of the week'
http://www.nswrl.com.au/content/nswrl/club/news/2016/03/07/round_1_team_of_the_.html

Good to see that a West Tigers forward is named but more importantly, putting the likes of Buchanan, Lovett etc on notice.

8 – Rod Griffin (Wests Tigers)
Like a fine wine, Papua New Guinean international Griffin continues to get better with age. The 29-year-old, who played in the Wests Tigers’ junior reps system, had a stellar 2015 season for the NRL State Championship-winning Ipswich Jets before returning to the Tigers this year. He’s in good form which could finally earn him his NRL debut in 2016.

And

2 – Josh Addo-Carr (Wests Tigers)
There was much hype surrounding 20-year-old winger and fullback Addo-Carr when he was signed to the Wests Tigers for this year and he certainly lived up to expectation in Round 1. The lifelong Tigers fan bagged a double in his club debut, including one spectacular chip-and-chase effort. NSWRL.com.au caught up with the speedster on his NRL prospects here.

I'd have no issues with JAC pushing Rankin out of the wing spot and Griffin pushing Lovett out of the side.

Both those players have a bit of x factor about them.

I'd like to see both of them given a chance.

I thought Lovett was pretty good v the Warriors, however I wouldnt mind Griffin getting a chance either.

JAC over Rankin really seems a no brainer. I can only imagine they are worried about JAC making mistakes yet Rankin dropped a bomb, dropped it 10m out from our line on a regulation hit up, let Lolohea get outside him easily for Kata's second try and didnt show any speed when he got put down the sideline with a mile of space mid way through the firts half. I struggle to see one benefit he has over JAC who by all reports tore nsw cup apart.

Your comments on Rankin are spot on. I don't understand the idea that JAC isn't ready so we'll throw someone in who isn't a winger.

Rankin isn't a winger. He's more a Mitchell Moses type player. Can cover fullback, but should only be really considered as a half or five-eighth

How did Parahi go? Tackling, linespeed etc.?

Only played 20 then went off with a shoulder injury and didn't go back on. Bit of a worry he's copped 2 injuries so early.

I didn't see the game but spoke to a guy who did and said he didn't look out of place, apparently put a few good hits on. You wouldn't have known it was his first game of league in 7 years.

With JAC i hope we are not making the same mistake as we did with a certain winger we released to the Storm...!

Id be signing him now for an extra year straight away , instead of showcasing him to other clubs and creating interest and also raising his market value.

Agree, it's not as though we have much other talent in NSW cup/NYC on the wing coming through.

By all accounts he went well, I wouldn't be letting anyone get near him yet.
