I'm really happy with the win all things considered.
Manly came ready with a really disruptive and unorthodox gameplan. High risk, high reward. Had it come off for them early, who knows what would have happened. As it turns out, we countered a couple of big plays and converted them into points - which ended up being the difference.
Thought both Hookers looked good with the ball - Soni in particular picked his opportunities perfectly, and didn't overplay his hand. Sommerton hung in there really tough in his first stint. He was blowing heavily within the first 5mins, and was struggling with the pace of the game, but dug really deep. Defensively neither is anywhere near Kenny, and it showed early on. Manly were able to punch into our line in the middle, and then found space out wide.
Our scramble defence is incredible though. Edwards is an S-tier fullback, and never looked in danger of being beaten when they were in open space. He just uses the sideline as an extra defender, and chops them down - while also allowing our remaining defenders as much time as possible to get set for the next tackle.
Thought Hosking's 1-on-1 defence was much improved this week. Manly obviously targeted the left-side more (rightly so), but they got nothing through Hosking regardless. I thought his first contact last week was very ordinary - not so last night.
Our forward pack were all strong again. Sorrenson ran some good lines without luck, Leota left 2 tries out there with his dick fingers, and Martin's kick chase remains the best in the game. Don't need to mention Yeo, he just gets it right everytime.
Hopefully we have enough players back next week to give some of our walking wounded a rest. Edwards in particular. Without knowing the particulars around Kenny's injury, and extra week off for him shouldn't hurt either. It's a short turn-around between the Titans and Eels games - let's just trust the depth for now.
Also, the ref was absolutly useless. Gave fans of other clubs far too much ammo for the 'refs favour the Panthers' narrative. Some of those non-knock on calls were stinkers - and the deer in headlights moment right on half-time after the 20m restart were very ordinary. Still think we were deserving winners - but I'd rather take the ref's influence out of the equation altogether.
Not overly worried about other teams trying to employ similar tactics to try and beat us. The teams we'll play in the finals should all back their ability to get into the grind - rather than relying on high-risk trick shots.
