Zac Lomax could make his first appearance for the Dragons in 2019 with centre Tim Lafai in doubt for Thursday night's clash with Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium.

Lafai has been hampered by a hamstring complaint so Lomax, who was named on the reserves list, has flown to Brisbane with the team as cover.

The Late Mail
Broncos v Dragons, Thursday 7.05pm (8.05pm AEDT) at Suncorp Stadium
Broncos: No late changes expected for the Broncos after last week's victory over the Cowboys. Corey Oates has scored 12 tries in his past six games, while the Broncos have defeated the Dragons in 10 of their past 11 games at Suncorp Stadium. Patrick Mago and Izaia Perese dropped off the extended bench 24 hours before kick-off.

Dragons: Tim Lafai is carrying a minor hamstring niggle with Zac Lomax travelling with the squad to Brisbane as cover on Tuesday, along with reserves forward Mitch Allgood. The Dragons scored 82 points in two victories over the Broncos last year. Reece Robson and Jonus Pearson dropped out of the 19-man squad on Wednesday night.

Who’s really ‘cracking under pressure?’: Stats expose Dragons centre Euan Aitken’s hypocrisy

Dragons centre Euan Aitken has come out swinging before his side meets the Broncos, suggesting their halves have a tendency to crack under pressure.

But after an 0-2 start to the season and a defence that’s leaking points through Aitken’s side of the field, is he really in a position to throw stones?

Aitken took aim at the oft-maligned pairing of Kodi Nikorima and Anthony Milford as the two sides meet at the site of last year’s 48-18 elimination final demolition by the Dragons.

Round 3
“When they are put under pressure, especially their halves, they can sometimes crack,” Aitken said.

“What is important to us is to start well and weather the storm early from their young and exciting forwards.

“If we get the jump on them we can lead from the front really well.”

Aitken’s right-edge has been a turnstile after the Dragons lost their defensive cornerstone back rowers in Tyson Frizell (injury) and Jack de Belin (stood down).

It seems the Dragons have enough problems in their own backyard to be taking potshots at a side that won by 19 points last round.

Aitken in particular was burned by opposite number Braidon Burns in South Sydney’s second-half onslaught in round two. Burns torched Aitkens for 166 metres and four tackle-breaks. Aitken committed an error, conceded a penalty and missed two tackles in the loss.

It’s important to note that defence is a team effort, and to blame Aitken on the Dragons’ woes would be unfair. It is curious though to hear him accusing opposition players of cracking under pressure a week after his own side capitulated to the tune of 28 points in the second half to a Rabbitohs side that tore through his side of the field.

It comes after former Broncos half Ben Hunt said he looked forward to facing his old friends in Brisbane.

But he cautioned his teammate against taking the halves too lightly.

“You can get up and put pressure on Milford but he can make you look like a fool and step around you,” Hunt said.

“The best way to limit him is defend together in a line and limit his opportunities.”

In two games since Hunt left the Broncos for the Dragons, he enjoys a 2-0 record.

“He is a weapon we will have to contain.” Broncos back-rower Alex Glenn was quick to pinpoint the Dragons’ danger man - his niggling mate Hunt.

“I know he thrives when he plays against the Broncos,” he laughed. “It’s always about bragging rights to see who gets one up on each other, this week will be no different.

“We have to make sure we don’t show Hunty too much space otherwise he will take those opportunities.

“He’s got a great running game and backs himself to get through a hole. That will be a big focus for us.” The Dragons have begun their season with two losses while the Broncos are riding high after thumping North Queensland 29-10 last round.

Don’t you get it? Lafai is an intregal part of the match winning, well oiled Dragons machine and as such super coach will do as he did with Aitken last year and play him until he has to come off after 10 minutes, so allowing the remaining two bench players that get game time to play longer minutes. Easy really.

So are you saying that Dufty will replace Lafai after 10mins of the game?

Maybe I should bet on Dufty being the first try scorer, what do you think?

I really don't get it, so what is the point then of flying Lomax up to Brisbane, or do you think that Lomax will take Dufty's place on the bench? If so why did Dufty fly up to Brisbane?

Cause Dufty is always in the 17 and will play Lomax 18th man as was against the Cowboys. 18th ad 19th have to fly with you. BTW..Lafai should be OK

I have a prediction. Dragons will put in and compete, fire up in the 1st half and it will be close at half time. No more than 6 in it. Second half....we will fatigue at the last 20 cause Broncs will throw it around and hit our edges all night with the big fellas.
The Sims Bros, McInnes, and our halves will be out on their feet due to defense

If Lafai drops out, will it be Aitken who moves to his favoured left side of the field to play opposite Roberts rather than Bird?

Heard on radio this morning that L plate has warned the Broncos to watch out for Korbin as he's fired up.
FFS just shut your mouth captain obvious.Of course he's going to be fired up against his old team.As if they don't expect it:rolleyes:

Yes, I heard the same thing and nearly swerved off the road. It seems it wasnt enough that Aitken opened his pie hole to stir the pot so Supercoach had to step in. Someone should tell him for Korbin to be effective he will need more than a few minutes off the bench at the end of the game.

Apparently Dufty is dropped off the bench tonight for Zac Lomax whom is back up cover for Lafai with a dodgy hammy!
In other words Zac will get 6 minutes at the end!

Here’s an idea

Why not play Zac rather than risk Lafai suffering a serious Hammy tear.

Lomax + Korbin Sims=Improved STGI performance.

Enough to win tonight?

Only if the Donkeys take us lightly.

Or even play Lomax for Aitken and risk Lafai.

Aitken can warm the bench and on be used if absolutely necessary...
