I don't think this forum, which is full mostly of harsh critics of most things, is a fair sample to use.

only sellers and big ant would know truly how many people are returning the game.

This forum is the intended audience, and whether they're harsh is irrelevant.

This game is not good enough, and this is not an opinion that you'd consider an outlier.

Harsh?

Come on. The fact that it's a league game actually made us buy the game. The fact that it was horrible made us return it.

It's a terrible game. I've seen better indie games.

I was playing Be A Pro and my team was leading 12-10 after 78:30 when I got subbed off when we got a scrum feed. Ended up losing 23-12 :crazy:

Love company representatives with their thinly veiled swipes at genuine complaints

Fact is they are charging a not-insignificant amount of money for a poor quality product. There is no excuse and they should own up to that fact despite whatever extenuating circumstances they might be claiming.

Name another industry where this kind of fobbing off would be acceptable.

Yeah I've had that a lot too. I like it when I'm up 24 nil with 10 left in the half, I get subbed off and the half-time score ends up being 24 - 7.

"you've got to play it like it's a real game of Rugby League " :lol:

Got to love how many random field goals there are. Down 15-4 in a match with about 10 to go and got subbed off and it ended up being 30-4. The extra 2 tries were expected but why another field goal

Been saying this for years about these games, since the Sidhe ones - lower budget is not an excuse for poor design. This game/series' problems can't simply be waved away by saying 'EA has more money'.

Ross in his replies repeatedly draws parallels to the Australian film industry. But the Australian film industry isn't content to put out rubbish and then claim it's the best we can do because we're a small country.

The excuses around this game's problems are akin to a low budget movie director saying that his film has massive plotholes due to budget constraints.

all I said was a that a footy forum probably isn't the most realistic gauge of the overall reaction to a game because of how small and niche it is. and that its easier to be a harsher critic behind a computer.

The return rate could be more than the average on here for all I know. This forum isn't as big and doesn't have as many contributors as you think. Its the same f**king people whinging over and over.

I didn't make a comment on how good the game was or wasn't where you quoted me. I'm not arguing with your conclusion of the game.

I get what you are saying, however, in fairness the BA forum has the same threads - including one with shitloads of pages about how dissapointing the game is. Also facebook is just as negative. I think you would find more people complaining about the game then those that believe it to be enjoyable.

I'll admit that there are likely many people that would simply keep this game, due to the niche market, but as an individual from what I have seen, the game has been mostly returned by friends and family.

The exception being my 9 year old nephew that believes this is the best game to ever be released. Yes, I understand that the market for this game may not be the 30 year old, father of two with a games history stretching back 25 years and rugby league fan since approximately birth. Nonetheless, it does not mean we have to accept shit responses from a developer explaining why the game 'does not stink'.

HBK wrote a huge ass post stating what they are now doing and so forth, however, the shit in the game should not be present and used to gauge feedback from the customer. The issues which are present are easily identifiable and anyone with a remote interest in the sport and video games could see that the errors which exist were also going to be game breaking.

Very good point and one I tried explaining in a big post about forward momentum on the last page.

These bugs/mechanisms shouldn't be getting through testing.

And thats why I asked...
Granted all issues cant be stopped by testing but the majority of ridiculous ones should have. Was it the wrong people testing? Too small a group? Were the testers reports ignored? The issues couldnt be fixed? The game was rushed out too early? Or the more logical....f**k it!! We can always patch it 5 times.

Frankly that's just the tip of the iceberg mate... it's also about cumulative knowledge and experience. Perhaps a better example would be defence technology, an area I have some experience in. Try to look at it a little like China's efforts to develop what's known as a "Blue water navy."

Their navy had planned to have this capacity by 2010, but were no where near it despite a tonne of money invested and copying numerous foreign designs.

What they lacked was cumulative knowledge; countries like Britain and the U.S. have been projecting their power over water for generations, and so have incredible infrastructure and knowledge networks and know-how built into their defence infrastructure.

This isn't something you can just waive a chequebook at to develop - it also takes a tonne of time and mistakes.

Now, whilst building a video game isn't quite to that level, it's a fair analogy, as it's also a highly technical area (in a way that writing a riveting drama is not, for example).

EA have good big sports games (and I say "big" because their Union games were some of the worst ever as they were given to shitty small time devs - which is what they'd do with league) because they've been making Madden, FIFA etc for literally decades and release an issue of each every single year.

Now, I really hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that level of experience, the knowledge networks and troubleshooting backlog developed from such a massive enterprise isn't something you can expect a tiny developer to get close to replicating when it is already working with one hundredth of the budget involved in just one edition of one of these EA games.

Yeah, I get that Ross is a dick and takes it all way too personally, but there's plenty of petulant crap on here too from people who clearly have no clue how complex an undertaking like this is, so it's not all one way.

I like that the kicking system has improved but the game is WAY too easy. Pulling off 70+ metre kick returns without even fending is just asinine. I want competition!

What is giving me the shits is that the trophies aren't available online to check off what you need to do. Yeah I'm a trophy hunter but it gives the game SOME essence of a challenge. I can access it offline, but it's not available online.

Pull the other one, mate - I bet that if you asked any rugby league fan if they'd rather pretty graphics and Be A Pro Mode, or an actually playable game with average graphics, they'd choose the good game every time.

They invested time and money into BAP and "pretty" graphics, but the gameplay is still as rotten as ever.

Nobody ever expected a Madden rival, but this is the - what is it? - fifth game or so, and it is just as rubbish to play as the first game imo. Issues that have been blatantly ignored include (and are not limited to):

* last defenders magically teleporting in front of you to save a try;
* long cut-out passes floating 10m forward;
* small players like Reece Robinson breaking every tackle attempted on them;
* props out-running backs to score;
* goals that clearly miss being given;
* CPU teams being down by 30 and opting for a field goal.

No excuse you can make for them will gloss over the fact they did not get their priorities right, and they've have several chances to get it right.

Being content because an effort was made is loser talk - that's what some supporters of shit teams, like my own, say when they have nothing left to cling to - but it doesn't excuse the team's shittiness.

so the game developers at big ant don't have the knowledge or experience to actually fix these issues? makes sense.

if that is the case, why don't they ask for outside help from one of the bigger sports game developers?

the attitude of 'we cant fix it so everyone will have to put up with it' doesn't cut the mustard in most other professions. There is no reason it will be ignored in the profession of game making.

Very amusing that on the BA forums they have a thread where the customer is supposed to alert them to all the glitches and BS that happens in the game. Did they not beta test the game? Why must we go through x-amount of patches to get a proper, bug-free game? They charge through the roof and it's still buggy.

Have had this game for a couple of weeks after a mate got it for my bday. I'll preface by saying i have purchased the two previous RLL games and was a big critic of both in terms of what you get for the cost.

RLL3 is a good attempt and there are some complaints i had that have since alleviated by learning the controls and trying different things. One of the biggest gripes i had was forwards not running onto the ball and getting smashed every time. Ive since learned that if you wiggle the right stick around after a tackle you'll either get a quick play the ball where your forwards do run onto the ball or a penalty, but seriously to do this every tackle seems a bit much.

Other issues like toe poking an opposition drop ball back to them when you only pressed it to tackle, passing out the back to noone and not one of your AI shows any urgency to run back and pick up the loose ball, opposition players knocking down the ball and not having a new set of tackles, and the fact that you can walk sideways from marker before the ball is played and not be offside are just ridiculous tbh.

The biggest reason i think youll find people are upset is that this attempt at a rugby league game (and its a solid attempt despite the problems) is being sold for full retail price when it is clearly not full retail quality. Now i dont care if you aren't as big as EA, im not expecting an EA quality game, but when you charge more than what they do then you cant cry poor about comparisons. I would be very happy with average graphics (and lets be honest while they are decent they're nothing spectacular) if the gameplay, physics, rules all worked properly. Add to this the disgraceful conduct of your CEO towards any criticism and i end up wanting to return this game because i dont believe your company deserve my custom, and had it not been a gift i would have done so already.

Well it's selling pretty well, so people can't be that upset. Also, if they'd produced a game with awful graphics, then they'd be copping shit from all angles for how awful it looks, and if you honestly don't understand that you have your head in the sand.

Nobody ever expected a Madden rival, but this is the - what is it? - fifth game or so, and it is just as rubbish to play as the first game imo. Issues that have been blatantly ignored include (and are not limited to):

Yeah mate, they did... People having been bringing up Madden and FIFA all over the place here, so there clearly was a pretty f**king massive expectation on the part of some here that RL would approach that.

Being content because an effort was made is loser talk - that's what some supporters of shit teams, like my own, say when they have nothing left to cling to - but it doesn't excuse the team's shittiness.

lol Ross may be a dick, but comments like this shows he fits in pretty well here.

Again, there's just a crap load of self-entitled whinging from people like you, and it mostly just shows are far you are from having any sort of clue about how technical knowledge based industries work.

This is the 3rd title that Big Ant have made for the record, whilst EA have been making Madden and FIFA games every year for almost 30 years, and they've been making those games in a country with market 15 times and 100 times larger than our own.

Money matters, experience matters, knowledge networks and infrastructure matters, and time matters.

I know that's really hard to grasp for kids like you, but maybe once you finish high school you can go start your own company and get back to us on just how easy it is to balance all your priorities and make the kind of Rugby League game you think is so easy.
