Well according to Paul Kent, the NRL and RLPA haven't got the salary cap sorted in time so the NRL won't have one for a year next year.

Apparently we are the only club to manage our cap properly, and we are going to be punished for it.

Then let's offer Bird a front-loaded contract jamming most of it in the first year - being the free-for-all year - then lesser amounts the following year?

If that is the way the game is going then get ruthless.

how will we be punished, we are one of the only teams who has heaps of room to move not to mention most teams were banking on a big cap increase to keep their players. if anything this will advantage us as teams need to offload players who cant fit under their cap.

Did you not read the bit where it is likely there will NOT BE A CAP next year?

So lots of room in a non-existent cap means nothing. It means the big club can front load contracts and pay them less in future years.

Gives clubs who are over the cap a 'free' year to spend as much as they like. If they're over a million next year then so be it. Over 2 million, no problem. Enjoy the year. Then, in 2019 they'll know the cap, which should be a modest increase on this seasons, limiting the damage and any players they may need to shed.

Also helps every other clubs keep anyone the really wanted for anothe year so we cant make a play at them even though we have played by the rules and have plenty of cash.

Mac - are you for real??? Where can we see the fine print? You been on the piss and missed a day? Do you think it's April 1 today???

So back on topic, who is off contract worth thinking about?

Bird
Widdop
Matulino
Bolton

...

Bird - would like him but don't like our chances. Could help us recruit a couple others if he signed. Will cost us a packet.
Matulino will go to Cleary.
Bolton is not he sort of bloke I'd be after.
Widdop - seriously on fire atm. Thought he wanted to go back home soon?

If we landed Bird, Matulino and Bolton it would be a very successful recruitment year (along with Ponga).

Our weakest areas are x-factor in the spine and grunt in the middle, so those 4 would directly address those issues. Our strongest areas are the back row, outside backs, and strangely enough I would say depth, because everyone is a bit same-same in our squad. When everyone is fit I don't have any dramas with the likes of Wardle, Pauli, Starling, Stockwell, Jacob, Tupou, Yates, Stone etc battling for bench spots and covering injuries.

It's more that we need 2-3 very, very good players to give the starting 13 more size, power and flair. So our recruitment needs to focus heavily on quality not quantity I would have thought.

I could get at least a little bit excited about...

1. Ponga
2. Sio
3. Gagai
4. Phythian / Pete M
5. Ross
6. Bird
7. Lamb
8. Matulino
9. Levi
10. Bolton
11. Buhrer
12. Sione M
13. Barnett

14. Kostjasyn
15. Jacob S
16. Daniel S
17. Pauli

18. Wardle
19. Starling

Sitaleki Akauloa
Nelson Asofa-Solomona
Scott Bolton
Jacob Lillyman
Kane Evans
Villiame Kikau
Ben Matulino
Albert Vete
Aaron Woods

I'd be happy to get any of these players for the right price.

I can't see us signing Woods, Matulino or Evans. I have read Matulino wants out of NZ, so he may be more likely than the other two.

It's almost to the point where any signings of middle forwards/halves would be good signings.

Speaking of unlikely signings, Shaun Johnson hasn't signed on for the Warriors next year, nor has Foran or Hingano. I think most people assume Foran will return to Australia, this will be SJ's most important contract being 27, and Hingano (allegedly) has offers from Australian clubs. Don't rate Hingano that much, but I think he can be a capable first grader, which is an upgrade on Hodko.

Lol you are kidding yourself if you think there will be no cap next year. I did read that part but I am not a moron and its quite obvious the cap will be the same as this year.

If there is no agreement they will keep the cap the same. Therefore we are advantaged quite a lot.

I think you are forgetting who runs the NRL.

What is good for the big clubs will be what happens.

If they were stupid enough to over commit to the runoured $9.5mil salary cap then they can offload players to us. It's the clubs problems to sort out.
