Maybe they learnt their lesson, imagine if they locked up papalii early
Thats a fair call I reckon. Unlike Emu, Ice had been around the NRL for a couple of years without great impact. Early negotiations based on an outstanding off season and the first couple of rounds may have worked out well and kept his value reasonable. It appears the horse had bolted by the time we commenced negotiations and hopefully/possibly lesson learned. Anyway move on. Like Gutho said, "theres always more players out there".

I heard we 3xtened Makatoa,Rodwell amd Ogden untill end of 2024. I find it odd. Guys like Gower and Stone could only ever land 1yr deals. Has out rune changed ot does the coaching staff rate these guys and locked them up? Considering Ogden was only on a trial and see contract id lean on they rate him highly as a genuine NRL prospect.
Greig extended till 23 I heard also.
If they're happy to sign extended deals as backups on minimum salary why wouldn't you? The players who don't want to be locked in long term are the ones who expect to increase in value, generally the younger players with high potential. It's all about supply and demand. How much demand do you really think there was for Makatoa, Rodwell and Ogden? Greig has the highest potential of the three so it's no surprise that he only wanted the one year extension. The others are just happy they have contracts for 2024.

But the club also must feel they have potential. Otherwise that is 3 x top 30 spots taken by guys who are only seen as back ups and blocking pathways to juniors they may promote.
Obviously there is still plenty of spots for juniors but I reckon they are exceptional trainers and the club thinks they will all play NRL over the next 3yrs. How much who knows.

I have this feeling Ogden is going to be very good.

I agree with Greig. He is at a balance point. Club aren't convinced he is worth more $$ then willing to offer and Greig thinks he can get more.

But they are all middle forwards and the pathway for those merkins is long. You're really burning a roster slot by carrying young middles if they're not going to be able to contribute in first grade that year. In this case, at least Greig and Rodwell are young in prop terms.

Well that's my point. They will play first grade, which is why they have contracts. Some of the kids in Flegg might have higher ceilings but the club also doesn't even know how they will handle reserve grade yet. We can't rely on them to be ready for the top 30 in 2023 or even 2024. With these retentions we have seven middle forwards locked in for 2023 (plus Cartwright and Lane) who we know can handle playing against grown men. There's also Hollis who is only 21 this year, who might have more potential than all of them but still mightn't be able to make an impact in reserve grade next year.

For 2024 there's only five middles on the books and no edge forwards (yet):
Campbell-Gillard
Makatoa
Ogden
Paulo
Rodwell

So there's still plenty of room in the 2024 roster.
I have this feeling Ogden is going to be very good.
He might at least become a solid first grader. He's had a couple of big games in the NRL, but also a lot of shit ones.
I agree with Greig. He is at a balance point. Club aren't convinced he is worth more $$ then willing to offer and Greig thinks he can get more.
Hopefully he has a breakout season, but if he does he's free to negotiate in November. Good timing for him.

Ice had played 60-odd first grade games before turning 22. You don't play 60-odd games as a young forward if you are not doing well. He obviously kicked on with us, but he is a completely different proposition to Emu.

I’d much rather Oates.
I think Isaako would be a bit more versatile in our backline, can kick goals and will come for one years since he is off to the Dolphins. A decent option if it happens. I've seen Isaako play some absolute rubbish games but I think his confidence was shot playing in that shithouse Broncos team. I wish Haze didn't get injured though.

Apparently, we're looking at Isaako after the Dunster injury. Not a bad backup and only a 1-year deal

Not a fan of Isaako, tbh.

And what's this "no depth" rhetoric they're spouting?

We could go for:

1. Gutherson
2. Blake
3. Opacic
4. Penisini
5. Simonsson

Or

1. Gutherson
2. Russell
3. Blake
4. Penisini
5. Simonsson

Or

1. Gutherson
2. Naiduke
3. Blake
4. Penisini
5. Simonsson

Or

1. Gutherson
2. Komolafe
3. Blake
4. Penisini
5. Simonsson

We don't lack depth.

We lack experienced depth. Penisini has only played 5 games. Russell 2. Simmonsen only 43. Naiduku or Komolafe aren't options imo.

To be fair Naiduki and Komolafe are not anywhere near 1st grade yet.
Russell and Loizou would be in front of them and I'm not a fan of playing Waqa on the wing as left centre is his spot and he was fantastic when he was moved there.
I watched the manly tigers trial and manly have about 6 wingers including Saab and Garrick who look the goods. This Vega character who scored a hat trick is on a train and trial contract was super impressive. They also had a Tupoulitou and the young tearaway Koula I think his name is. They all showed intent and hunger.
We do need another winger.
I think Perham could also do a job there if need be.

Actually thought Komolafe looked very promising.

Obviously wasn’t against a full strength NRL side, but has only just done his first NRL offseason/nrl trial….

big boy, looks strong and likes to get involved…

WouId like to see him get some game time against the panthers, reckon he could be Smokey for a debut this year..

there is also Loizou who we haven’t seen a lot off but appears to highly rated by the club too

There is also Loizou who is on a development contract thus in front of Komlafe…

We don't lack depth.
It’s the same thing as when we had Stone starting at hooker. We lack depth after 2 genuine starters get injured (say what you will about Sivo, he’s still comfortably in top 32 NRL wingers).
I’d say we’ll lean towards option 1 there but it’ll depend on how we want to use Blake, not what we feel the suitability of Opacic/Russell is. And also depend on how long Dunster and Sivo are out for
