I just wanna know how we blew the second-tier cap by a whopping $233,036 last year

I think it gets pretty dicey when we are paying players at other clubs, and our share of their salary goes into our 2nd tier cap *if the other club play them at NRL level* (or some similar condition). The basic 2nd tier cap refers to the salaries of all non-Top 25 players who play NRL in that season, and doesn't specify for which club. The nature of the warning the NRL gave us is likely to be of along the lines of 'if you play X this week you will be over the 2nd tier cap, and unless you take further action you will breach the cap'. 'further action' could include moving players currently in the Top 25 etc. So it is theoretically possible to redeem the situation.....but $233k is weird.

BA picks the team and played these players. So he must also think he is above the law.

I love how everyone on here were happy to blame Ribot and point the finger at the Bellamy when the Storm were cheating and rightfully so. But when we do it it has nothing to do with our coach or current admin, even though the breaches were for 2013 and 2014 - the year they were in charge.
Who was in charge when RS did the cleanout? Wasn't Sharpie at the whiteboard session as well.

The Eels, under new management following the election of a board led by premiership winner Steve Sharp in 2013, told the NRL of their salary cap concerns for 2014 that year and disclosed a number of breaches in a pre-season statutory declaration. However, their failure to then heed the warnings and the advice from League Central has seen them hit hard by penalties.

The club's second-tier issues last year centre on payments that continued to be made to players after they had left the club, a predicament that came to light last July.

Fairfax Media reported then that the Eels were shelling out more than $750,000 to players who had departed the club, which impacted both their top-tier and second-tier salary caps.

They included Reni Maitua (Canterbury), Jacob Loko (Canterbury) Daniel Harrison (Manly), Jordan Latham (Manly), Cheyse Blair (Manly), Jake Mullaney (Salford), Matt Ryan (Wakefield Trinity) and Brayden Wiliame (Manly).

SURELY we won't be dumb enough not to do what the NRL wishes us to do. A review would probably really help, even though the current blokes are doing a good job to turn this mess around.

If we were to start off next year on -4 points, i would be devastated.

Eels statement on salary cap

Thu 21st May, 05:30PM

2014 Media Release

The Parramatta Eels have today received a preliminary breach notice from the National Rugby League (NRL) regarding the Eels' NRL and NYC salary caps. The NRL has recommended an overall fine of $525,000.

As the NRL acknowledged, the primary contributing factor was consistent mismanagement of the NRL and NYC playing squad and salary cap compliance between 2010 and mid-2013.

In 2013, the newly-elected board of the Parramatta Leagues Club initiated an extensive internal investigation, which by late 2013, had raised significant concerns regarding player contracts and squad management.

Eels senior management alerted the NRL of its concerns, and it was determined that the club would continue to advise the NRL of all subsequent issues to be considered as part of the NRL’s regular 2014 mid-season salary cap audit.

Eels CEO Scott Seward said the club had cooperated extensively with the NRL in its audit processes.

“We have been upfront with the NRL, in fact, we were the first to bring these issues to the NRL’s attention,” Seward said.

“The situation as it stands is that with the hard work of our football department and the support of the Board we are compliant with the salary cap for the 2015 season, and in good shape for the seasons to come.”

“For us, that’s paramount. We are determined to continue strengthening the Eels line up to maximise our opportunities to succeed.”

Eels Chairman Steve Sharp described today’s announcement as symptomatic of wider failures in the previous administrations of the club.

“Today’s findings again highlight that dark period for our club between 2010 and 2013,” Sharp said.

“The constant changing of coaches, players and club executives, the mismanagement of core parts of our business across both the Eels and Parramatta Leagues Club, and these issues go hand in hand.”

“As part of our commitment to good governance and in order to rectify the bad practices of the past, a full review of all player contracts was done and any and all non-compliant aspects across both NRL and NYC were included in the 2014 NRL salary cap audit.”

The NRL has also recommended a conditional penalty of 4 competition points, to be deducted at the start of the 2016 season unless the Eels undertake an independent review of governance and organisational capability and implement all reasonable changes recommended by that review.

The Eels Board will review the NRL recommendations and then provide a response in relation to the preliminary breach notice and the proposed independent review.

 You replied to me first today Chief. You are the one who criticises anyone who has anything negative to say about the club no matter what the circumstances. If Charles Manson was in charge of recruitment you would be waving your poms poms for him. Go Parra!!!

No just you.

I'm a little lost here...

BA towards the end of his press conference this morning confirmed to the reporters question that we have reached the 2nd tier cap limit for the season. http://eels.co/1AmzOoB

So, payments for players outside Top 25 is $440,000, which is roughly 5 and a bit players on minimum wage. Essentially then you're really allowed to use 30 players in a season.

This season so far we have used 25 players as follows
1. Will Hopoate
2. Semi Radradra
3. Beau Champion
4. Brad Takairangi
5. Reece Robinson
6. Corey Norman
7. Chris Sandow
8. Darcy Lussick
9. Nathan Peats
10. Tim Mannah
11. Manu Ma'u
12. Tepai Moeroa
13. Anthony Watmough
14. Isaac De Gois
15. Joseph Paulo
16. Junior Paulo
17. David Gower
18. Danny Wicks
19. John Folau
20. Ryan Morgan
21. Peni Terepo
22. Bureta Faraimo
23. Richie Fa'aoso
24. Pauli Pauli
25. Luke Kelly

So does that mean that we have 5 players currently inside our Top 25 who we have yet to use this season?

Am I missing something here?

The current board is nothing to do with what happened.
it was 2010 to 2013......

Believe those decisions were made in late 2013 and 2014, but you guys carry on with the deflection regardless.

Yeh, we may have players playing for other clubs who take up spots in either the Top 25 players paid by us, or in our 2nd tier. E.g. Loko, possibly Tanginoa,

And I think we were initially keeping 1 Top 25 spot for wonderboy.

It probably does. Poor decision making if you ask me. Ryan Matterson, Kaysa Pritchard, Kenny Edwards, Ben Crooks and 1 other?

Heads have got to roll over this embarrassment! Seward? Should Sharp stand down? He promised us good governance. I feel mislead : (
